Chapter 149
Vanessa's POV
As I marveled at my transformation, an unsettling feeling crept over me-the sensation of being watched. My instincts heightened, I turned swiftly, my senses alert. There, leaning casually against a tree, stood Alpha Alexander.
He wore plain jeans and a shirt that clung to his muscular frame, each muscle defined and rippling as he adjusted his stance. It was clear he was intentionally showing off, exuding confidence and raw power. His presence was magnetic, impossible to ignore, and I felt a surge of both admiration and irritation.
Alexander's piercing eyes were locked onto me, his gaze intense and unwavering. He looked at me as if I were the most fascinating thing he had ever seen in his entire life. There was an undeniable heat in his eyes, a blend of curiosity and something deeper, something primal.
His gaze traveled over my lycan form, taking in every detail. The scrutiny made my fur bristle, a mix of pride and challenge rising within me. I straightened, standing taller under his intense observation, refusing to let him intimidate me despite the undeniable attraction I felt.
"Alexander," I acknowledged, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. I knew the mindlink would work because we are mates, and I am also in my lycan form.
The Alpha was undeniably hot, his presence commanding and almost overwhelming, but I couldn't afford to be distracted. Not when Eva was nearby, and not when my own power was still so new.
"Impressive," he said, his voice a deep rumble that sent a shiver down my spine. "I didn't expect to find such a magnificent lycan here."
I met his gaze, unflinching. "What do you want, Alexander?"
I didn't know if I was happy he was truly here, angry he had seen me in my lycan form, or scared he might hear the two heartbeats like Alfie did.
He smirked, pushing off the tree and taking a step closer, his muscles rippling under his shirt. "Just observing," he replied, his eyes never leaving mine. "You're quite the sight, you know. Powerful, commanding... beautiful."
His words stirred something within me, but I pushed it aside, focusing on the immediate concern. Vanessa needed my protection, and whatever game Alexander was playing, I couldn't let it distract me from that.
"Stay out of my way," I warned, my voice low and firm. "I have responsibilities here."
Alexander's eyes sparkled with amusement and something darker, more dangerous. "Don't worry," he said, his tone almost mocking. "I'm just here to enjoy the show."
With that, he leaned back against the tree, his gaze shifting momentarily to where my dress lay, before settling back on me. The challenge in his eyes was clear, and I knew this was far from over. But for now, my focus remained on protecting myself, no matter how tempting the Alpha standing before me might be.
Determined to maintain my dignity, I slowly made my way behind a large tree, keeping my eyes on Alpha Alexander's piercing gaze until the last possible moment. There was no way I was going to run in my lycan form while he was here, especially when I was still new to everything. The last thing I wanted was to give him any reason to laugh at me.
Once behind the tree, hidden from view, I began the careful process of shifting back to my human form. The change was still fresh to me, each step requiring concentration and effort. I felt my bones realign, muscles retracting and reshaping as my fur receded. The sensation was both strange and familiar, a reminder of the power I now wielded.
As the transformation completed, I took a deep breath, feeling the cool bark of the tree against my bare back. I quickly reached for the clothes I had stashed nearby, slipping into my sundress with practiced ease. My fingers trembled slightly, a combination of adrenaline and the lingering impact of Alexander's presence. I couldn't let him see me struggling, couldn't give him the satisfaction of thinking he had the upper hand.
Once I was fully dressed, I took another steadying breath and stepped out from behind the tree, my expression composed and confident. Alexander's eyes tracked my movements, a glint of curiosity and something deeper flashing in his gaze. His smirk widened slightly, but I met his look head-on, refusing to be intimidated.
"Impressive," he said again, his tone laden with a mix of admiration and challenge. "You handle the shift well."
I shrugged, keeping my voice casual. "I've had practice." Lie.
His smirk deepened, and he pushed off the tree, taking a step closer. "I can see that. But remember, this isn't a game. The real challenges are just beginning."
I nodded, acknowledging his words without giving him any more ground. "I'm aware. And I'm ready."
Determined to confront him, I stepped closer, my transformation complete. My heart pounded in my chest as I made my way towards Alpha Alexander. He watched me intently, his piercing eyes never leaving mine. His presence was imposing, but I refused to let him intimidate me any longer.
"Why are you here, Alexander?" I demanded, my voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside me. "After everything you did, you have the audacity to come find me?"
His smirk faltered slightly, replaced by a more serious expression. "Little fox, I-"
"No," I interrupted, my anger bubbling to the surface. "You don't get to just show up like this. Do you have any idea what you put me through? The pain, the confusion? And now you think you can just waltz back into my life? I refuse. I want you gone."
He took a step forward, his expression softening, but I held up a hand to stop him. "Stay where you are," I warned. "I don't want to hear any excuses."
Alexander's eyes darkened with a mix of regret and something else I couldn't quite place. "I didn't mean to hurt you, Vanessa. I thought I was doing what was best."
I shook my head, disbelief mingling with my anger. "What was best for who? Certainly not for me."
Evie, my wolf, growled in agreement inside my mind, her presence giving me strength. "I am not the same person you left behind, Alexander. I've grown stronger, and I don't need you meddling in my life."
Alexander's expression softened further, a flicker of genuine regret crossing his face. "I can see that, fox. And that's why I'm here. To make amends, if you'll let me."
I took a deep breath, the weight of his words sinking in. Part of me wanted to believe him, to give him a chance to explain. But the wounds were still fresh, and trust was something that had to be earned, not given freely.
"We'll see," I said finally, my voice firm. "But for now, I need space. I need time to process everything without you hovering over me."
Alexander nodded slowly, respecting my decision. "I'll give you that space, Vanessa. But know that I'm not giving up. I want to make things right."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me standing in the clearing with a whirlwind of emotions. As I watched him go, I felt a mix of relief and lingering anger. It would take time to heal, but at least now I had the strength to face whatever came next.
And I don't want him to know about the baby.
