Chapter Thirty-Two: Beyond the Veil
Chapter Thirty-Two: Beyond the Veil
Seraphina POV
We were walking through the woods now. That’s all we’ve pretty much been doing. Walking. Hiding.
I was so tired. I would have given anything to stop for a drink, or maybe a snack.
But Ronan said any moment of weakness could endanger us, so I pushed still.
Brushing my legs past the uncomfortable feel of grass on my fragile legs.
“Where are we going exactly?”
Ronan said nothing. Just kept staring ahead.
“Don’t tell me you’ve changed your mind about protecting me, and you’re now trying to return me to the king.” I teased. But he didn’t find it funny.
Gosh, he can feel infuriating sometimes. His face was drawn in serious lines.
He was way too stiff. And I wish he’d stop having so many serious and sad expressions.
I was the one with the sad fate after all.
“You’ll find out once we get there.”
Why can’t he just tell me now?
Arrrgh. I didn’t say anything to him. I decided to just keep to myself.
It wasn’t until we got to the front of a very large tree that we eventually stopped moving,
He eyed the tree like it had food or water.
The tree looked pretty normal. Except that it was very large.
“Is this our destination?”
“Yes.”
Confusion spams me.
He took a deep breath.
“Have you heard of the Flea?”
“Uhm.” Yes? I mean aren’t fleas bugs or something?
“You mean the bugs?”
“No. I mean yes.”
Was he okay? Did he hit his head a bit too much?
“I’m seriously lost right now.”
“Do you know a flea is one of the creatures that can pass through the tiny line drawn between our realm and the other side?”
“Okay?”
“This tree was built centuries ago to house thousands of fleas, it was believed that the death of thousands of fleas could open up a doorway to the other side.”
“You want me to kill a bunch of insects to cross to the other side?”
“Exactly.”
“Do you realize that you sound nuts? Okay, indulge me. What is this other side?”
“It’s the land of humans. Where your mother is from.”
I froze in an instant. I wasn’t prepared for that.
“That’s stupid. The only people who can go to the human lands are the vampires, and they can only go there at night. So how would we two ordinary wolves go there?”
“Cause we’re not just two wolves, we’re two hybrids. One of whom is half human.”
I breathed through my nose. He wasn’t making much sense.
“Why would we need to get to the human land?”
“It’s the only place where you’ll be safe, from everyone, at least until the heat dies down.”
“And you think they wouldn’t come looking for me in the human lands? Heck, they would just order a vampire to find me, and boom. It’s back to square one again.”
“I know it’s not the best option. But it’s our only option. They wouldn’t figure that we would go to the human lands. Cause they know werewolves can’t survive there, and so it’ll take a while before they figure it out.”
“And would we survive there?”
“Like I said. We’re no ordinary wolves, so yes. We may have a chance.”
“May?”
“Just try it. Please. If it doesn’t work. We’ll think of a plan B.”
I took deep breaths. His idea may be crazy. But I trusted Him. He would never let me go through something that would hurt me.
Kill the insects. Got it.
I felt a tad guilty. I mean if this were their home, I was massacring an entire village.
Well, it was either that, or actual people dying cause of the whole lobizona frenzy war.
Shaking my head. I tried to focus instead.
I had been able to harness my mind powers, all I had to do was irritate them enough to manipulate their breathing pipe.
And in no less than a seconds, their bodies was falling fast to the ground, it was like a whirlwind of insects.
And after the last one fell to the ground. Nothing happened. Just blank.
I looked at him. Expecting answers.
“Please don’t tell me we murdered innocent insects for a theory that failed?”
“It shouldn’t fail. According to the legend-“
“The legend! We can’t trust the legend. Shouldn’t you know that by “
“Shhhsh.” He shut me up. I opened my mouth to protest again.
“Listen.”
There was the swift sound of moving cars and distant talk.
Ronan moved closer to the tree, he held it, and instead of seeing his hands on the tree. It had gone inside the tree, deep inside.
“It worked. The gate just wasn’t visible.”
I bit my lower lip. I feel a tad bad for snapping at him. I went closer to the tree.
“On the count of three, we go in together.”
I nodded.
“One, two, three.”
I pushed in. And immediately my body was sucked into oblivion. And for a second I couldn’t see anything. It was like traveling between darkness and air.
Until my hands felt something solid. I pushed through and I was in the woods. And out of a tree.
The weirdest thing was that the woods looked familiar. Too familiar.
Like home.
And also. No sign of Ronan.
Where had he gone?
Before I could answer that. Two skimpy ladies with blond hair and ginger hair came passing. They were stacked up with heavy items.
When they saw me, they spoke in whispers. Only that I could only hear it.
“Is she lost?”
“Must be a runaway. Ignore. I heard they are good at robbing.” The other said as they walked past me.
But that wasn’t the weirdest thing about them, it was their smell.
I couldn’t explain it. It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t good either. Just outright werid.
The scream of the blond girl caught my attention, and she pointed towards the left side of the woods.
“It’s a wolf!” She alarmed. And when the other say it, she screamed and went running off.
A wolf?
I walked towards where she pointed.
And it wasn’t just any wolf. It was Ronan. In his wolf form.
And not just that his eyes had gone weird. Like when rogue wolves did. And he was staring at those girls like his meal.
He couldn’t eat them.
I stood in front of him before he lurched at them. But that may have been dumb. Cause his hunt was now directed at me.
He sneered and growled.
I tried to channel my powers, but I couldn’t feel anything. It was just outright blank.
And then he pushed me to the floor with his paws, trying to get a bite off my head.
I pushed at it and pushed. Was this how I was going to die?
Just as he was about to succeed. Something came flying and hit Ronan, sending him straight to the floor.
Blood oozes out of his side.
What the heck?
