Chapter 17: The Final Stand

Chapter 17: The Final Stand

Clara’s breath hitched as the monstrous creature stepped closer, its massive form emerging from the shadows. The werewolf’s eyes, burning with an unholy light, locked onto hers, and every muscle in her body screamed for her to run. But there was nowhere to hide. Nowhere to escape.

The blood moon overhead bathed the clearing in its crimson glow, casting long, twisted shadows that seemed to stretch and writhe across the ground. The creature’s fur glistened in the eerie light, its muscles rippling beneath its skin as it prowled toward her with a low, guttural growl. The air was thick with the smell of decay, the scent of death that had haunted Black Hollow for generations.

Clara’s heart pounded in her chest as she took a hesitant step back, her grip tightening on the knife. She had never faced anything like this before not the way the werewolf stood, as if it had been summoned by the blood moon itself, empowered by the curse that had cursed Black Hollow for centuries.

Evan’s voice broke through the growing tension, soft and taunting. “This is it, Clara. You are standing at the edge of history. You’ve come so far, only to be faced with the truth: you are the heir to this curse. The curse feeds on you, and tonight, it will consume you completely.”

Liam moved closer to Clara, his expression set in determination. His eyes flicked to the creature, then to Clara, a silent promise that he would protect her no matter the cost. “We’re not letting this happen,” he said, his voice low but steady. “We’ll stop him, Clara. Together.”

Clara turned toward him, her eyes filled with fear, but also something stronger resolve. “We don’t have much time. We need to figure out how to stop this before the curse consumes everything.”

Liam nodded, his grip on his weapon tightening. “We’ll find a way.”

But Clara wasn’t so sure. Evan had spoken the truth. She had been bound to this curse her entire life her blood, her family, the Rourkes all tied to the monstrous forces that haunted Black Hollow. There was no escaping it now.

The creature took another step forward, and Clara felt her pulse quicken. It was too close now. There was no more room to back away. The werewolf’s jaws snapped in the air, its fangs gleaming as it growled, a low, vibrating sound that seemed to shake the earth beneath their feet.

Evan’s voice rose again, his words like a knife to Clara’s heart. “This creature this beast was never a threat to the curse. It’s simply the vessel. The tool used to enforce the bloodline’s rule. It is only through your blood, Clara, that it has lived so long. The curse was meant to keep it alive. And tonight, you will fulfill your part in that plan.”

Clara swallowed hard, her throat dry. Her blood. Everything, all the suffering and darkness, had always been connected to her. But she refused to believe that she was doomed to be a puppet in this game of ancient forces. There had to be a way to break free. There had to be a way to destroy the curse.

The werewolf let out a roar, its fangs bared as it lunged forward, aiming for Clara. Time seemed to slow as the beast hurtled through the air, its claws reaching for her throat. Instinctively, Clara swung the knife upward, but the creature was faster too fast.

Liam shoved her out of the way, his body taking the full brunt of the werewolf’s attack. Clara’s scream tore through the air as Liam’s form collided with the beast, sending them both crashing to the ground.

“No!” Clara shouted, her heart wrenching as she watched Liam struggle beneath the creature’s weight. She ran toward them, her mind numb with panic, but her feet felt as though they were made of lead. The knife she held was useless against the werewolf’s size and strength, it might as well have been a toothpick.

But then something shifted.

A deep, rumbling growl sounded from the werewolf as it shifted its attention toward Clara, its yellow eyes glowing with hunger. In that moment, Clara saw it for what it truly was a vessel of destruction, a force of nature, born from centuries of pain and suffering. It wasn’t just an animal. It was a manifestation of everything Black Hollow had suffered.

Clara’s grip on the knife tightened again as she stood her ground. She would not let this thing destroy the people she cared about. She would not let it destroy Liam.

Her mind raced, trying to recall every bit of lore she had heard, every whisper of the curse that had been passed down through generations. There had to be something some way to stop it, to sever the bloodline’s power.

The blood moon. The connection to the Rourke family. The pact that had been made.

Clara’s thoughts turned back to the altar the ancient stone where the curse had first been sealed. If the curse had been bound by blood, could it be undone the same way? Could she sever the link by sacrificing something someone to break the pact?

The creature lunged again, and Clara had no choice but to act. She rushed forward, swinging the knife with all her strength. The blade sank into the werewolf’s side, but it didn’t stop. It barely seemed to slow.

“Clara!” Liam cried out, his voice strained as he struggled beneath the creature. “You need to”

Clara didn’t wait for him to finish. She grabbed his arm, yanking him out from under the werewolf, and pulled him to his feet.

“Go!” she shouted. “I’ll hold it off. You have to get to the altar. We have to break the curse, or we’ll all die here.”

Liam hesitated, his eyes wild with fear, but Clara’s fierce gaze left no room for doubt. He nodded once, and with a quick glance toward the blood moon, he ran toward the stone altar.

Clara stood alone, facing the werewolf once more. The creature growled low, its fury focused entirely on her. It wasn’t just after her blood it wanted to destroy everything she cared about. And she was the one who had to stop it.

The curse had ruled Black Hollow for centuries. But tonight, Clara would be its end.

With one final, defiant cry, she raised the knife high, ready to strike.
