Chapter 16: The Blood Moon’s Rise
Chapter 16: The Blood Moon’s Rise
The world held its breath.
Clara’s heart pounded in her chest as she lunged toward Evan, her hand clutching the knife with a white-knuckled grip. The cold steel glinted in the pale moonlight, her only weapon against the nightmare that stood before her. The forest around them seemed to shudder in anticipation, the trees bending toward the clearing, as if the earth itself was waiting for the clash to come.
Evan’s smirk deepened, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement as he watched her approach. But there was no fear in his gaze only cold, unyielding certainty. He knew something she didn’t. And that knowledge made him dangerous.
Liam stepped forward in a blur of motion, his hand grabbing Clara’s wrist before the knife could strike. “Clara, stop!” he shouted, his voice raw with panic.
She jerked her arm free from his grasp, the adrenaline coursing through her veins. “I have to do this, Liam. You don’t understand he’s not human. He’s part of the curse.”
Liam’s expression twisted with frustration. “I know, but you don’t have to fight him like this. There has to be another way.”
Clara shook her head, her eyes fixed on Evan, who watched their exchange with a disinterested expression, as though they were merely ants scurrying beneath his feet.
“No,” Clara whispered, more to herself than to anyone else. “There is no other way. He’s too far gone. He’s the one who’s been controlling this all along. It’s time to end it.”
Before Liam could respond, Evan’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding. “Enough of this charade.”
In a sudden, fluid motion, Evan raised his hands, and the ground beneath their feet seemed to tremble. Clara staggered back as the air thickened, the temperature plummeting, as though a storm was brewing within the forest itself.
Liam stepped between her and Evan, his posture protective, though the unease in his eyes was impossible to hide. “What are you doing?”
Evan’s smile was a shadow of something older, more dangerous. “You think you can stop me with a knife, boy? You think your courage is enough to undo what I’ve set in motion?”
Clara’s stomach twisted as a low rumble echoed from the depths of the forest. It wasn’t thunder this was something far darker. Something more primal. The trees around them creaked and groaned, their roots shifting beneath the earth, as though some ancient force was awakening.
The full moon high above them in the sky glowed red. A blood moon.
Clara felt her blood run cold as she realized the significance of the moment. It wasn’t just any full moon. This was the night when everything would change—the night when the curse would reach its apex.
“The blood moon,” she murmured, her voice barely audible. “It’s happening. The curse… it’s reaching its full power tonight.”
Evan’s eyes gleamed with triumph as the blood moon bathed the clearing in an eerie crimson light. “Yes,” he said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. “The time is finally here. You are the key, Clara. The one who will awaken the true power of the curse.”
Clara shook her head, trying to push through the haze of fear and confusion that clouded her mind. “I won’t help you,” she said, her voice more forceful now. “I won’t become part of your curse.”
Evan chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that sent a shiver down her spine. “You already are, Clara. You always have been.”
He raised his hand, and Clara felt a rush of energy surge through the air a wave of raw, dark power that made the ground beneath her tremble. The earth groaned, as if it, too, was alive and aware of the curse awakening.
Clara staggered backward, her breath coming in sharp gasps. She had no idea what Evan was doing, but she could feel the curse beginning to wrap around her, tightening like a noose. She glanced at Liam, and for a moment, their eyes locked there was no time for words, only the understanding that they were both standing on the edge of something unspeakable.
“No,” Clara whispered, more to herself than to Evan. “I won’t let this happen. I’ll end it, no matter the cost.”
Liam reached out, grabbing her arm with desperate urgency. “Clara, please this is exactly what he wants. He wants you to fight him. He wants to drag you into this madness.”
Clara tore her gaze from him, her focus locked on Evan. “I have to. There’s no other choice.”
With a cry of determination, she wrenched free from Liam’s grip, the knife still clutched tightly in her hand. She raised it high, her body trembling with the weight of the decision before her. The curse had lived within her blood for generations now, it was time to destroy it.
Evan’s expression darkened. “Foolish girl,” he spat. “You think you can defeat me? You think you can erase centuries of history with a single strike? You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”
Clara’s heart raced as she took a step forward, her mind reeling. I am not a victim of this curse. I will not be its heir. I will be its end.
But as she took another step, she felt it something dark, something ancient stirring in the air. A force greater than anything she had ever faced. It wasn’t just the curse that was alive it was the land itself, the very heart of Black Hollow.
The ground trembled again, and Clara’s knees buckled as a deep, guttural growl echoed from the forest’s edge. It wasn’t Evan. It wasn’t a man at all.
Something worse.
A shadow shifted between the trees a hulking, monstrous shape that loomed over them, its eyes glowing with an unnatural, fiery light. The werewolf, but this time… it was different. Larger. Darker. More powerful than anything Clara had seen before.
Her breath caught in her throat as the creature stepped into the clearing, its claws scraping against the stone altar. The full moon, now fully crimson, bathed the creature in an otherworldly light. Clara’s body froze as the werewolf’s gaze locked onto hers.
Evan’s laughter echoed through the clearing, rising above the growls of the beast. “Do you see now, Clara? This is the true power of the curse. The true power of your bloodline. This creature was never just a monster it was the key. And tonight, it is reborn.”
Clara’s heart pounded in her chest as she stepped back, the knife still held in her trembling hand. The creature was coming for her, its eyes hungry for the blood it had been bound to for centuries.
And this time, there was no escape.
