Chapter 64: THE RITUAL.
Nathan, cradling the unconscious Amara gently in his arms, surveyed the room that enveloped them, a chamber suspended in time and seemingly forgotten by the world. The air within hung thick with the weight of decades gone by, and a palpable sense of desolation clung to every nook and cranny.
The room’s walls, once adorned with vibrant wallpaper, had surrendered their brilliance to the relentless march of time. Now, they wore a faded and peeling floral pattern, their once-vivid hues reduced to muted, melancholic tones. The wooden floorboards, bearing the scars of countless footsteps, had weathered years of use and neglect, their original luster buried beneath layers of wear and tear.
Cobwebs had claimed the room’s corners, weaving intricate tapestries of neglect that glistened faintly in the dim light. The tattered curtains, threadbare and discolored, strained to shield the room from the outside world. Despite their efforts, the feeble rays of daylight that filtered through could only muster a timid illumination, casting long shadows that seemed to breathe with the room’s history.
The chamber existed as a time capsule, untouched by the advances of modernity. It held the secrets of countless moments that had unfolded within its confines, a sanctuary of mysteries concealed in its rusty embrace.
In the heart of this antiquated space stood an aged wooden table, a relic of eras long past. Its surface bore the marks of time and use, a testament to the rituals and gatherings that had transpired upon it. Arranged meticulously on the table’s timeworn top were candles, their wax yellowed with age and their wicks waiting to be ignited.
These candles, set in an intricate pattern, held an aura of ancient significance. Their flickering flames cast ethereal, dancing shadows upon the walls, creating an eerie yet mesmerizing ambiance that filled the room. Each candle seemed to possess a story of its own, a repository of forgotten moments and intentions.
As Nathan lowered Amara onto the creaking bed, he couldn’t shake the feeling of foreboding that washed over him. It was as though the room itself held its breath, harboring secrets and memories that were poised to resurface during the impending ritual. The dusty, rusty chamber had borne witness to years of solitude, and now, it was about to become the stage for a mysterious and enigmatic event, one that would unlock the secrets buried within its walls. It was exactly what he needed to conclude the ritual.
He had captured Amara’s heart these past two and a half months, just enough time for the ritual to work like it should.
“The stronger the love, the more power would be bestowed” was just what he needed. It would have no effect on Amara neither would it have effect on him, but it couldn’t be halted or disturbed. He had just gravely injured her siblings and they were still in hot pursuit under the stormy rain. He had prepared this place a long while before. The candles and everything else he needed was already there. All that was left was for Amara to wake.
The past two and half months, he had fed her with a power revealing potion, one that would awaken the ancient Arcata that was buried deep inside her bones.
He walked to a table, his hands on the gem of Destruction. He looked at the gem, his mind in disarray. That gem had caused him problems for a very long time and it was only a matter of time before he would gain control again.
Suddenly he heard movements behind him, he turned to see Amara setting upright. Her hands on her head, a dull pain from where Sarah had hit her was still there.
“Where am I?” she asked, her hand massaging her head slowly.
“It doesn’t matter, you are with me.”
“Nathan?” Amara called, a tint of excitement in her voice knowing that Nathan was with her.
“Where are we?” she asked.
Nathan knew that he immediately had to set his plan out. What he wanted to do was act sick and completely vulnerable in front of her with the hopes of getting her to perform the ritual on him.
Nathan knew he had to tread carefully. He couldn't reveal too much too soon, as his plan relied on Amara's cooperation. He decided to play his part convincingly and act vulnerable to gain her sympathy.
As he pretended to weaken, Nathan clutched the gem of Destruction tightly in his hand. It had been a source of both power and torment for him, and he yearned to reclaim control over it.
Amara still had her hand massaging her aching head. Her confusion was evident, and Nathan seized this moment to further manipulate her emotions.
"Amara, I'm not well," he said, his voice trembling as he put on a convincing act. "I've been feeling weaker every day. The gem, it's been draining me."
Amara's concern for Nathan deepened as she saw him in this state. She had no idea of the dark intentions hidden behind his facade. Nathan knew that the key to his plan was to make Amara believe that she could save him, that she held the power to restore his strength.
Unaware of the perilous path that lay ahead, Amara leaned in closer, her empathy for Nathan overriding her doubts. Nathan had set the stage, and now he waited for Amara to unwittingly step into his carefully crafted trap. She didn’t know what this gem was or what power it held, but she was still determined to save Nathan.
Nathan continued to play his part, feigning vulnerability as he clutched the gem of Destruction in his hand. He knew that the gem was the linchpin of his plan, and he needed Amara to believe that it was the source of his weakening condition.
With each labored breath, Nathan conveyed the image of a desperate man on the brink of collapse. His voice quivered as he spoke, his words designed to elicit sympathy and concern from Amara. He was acutely aware that he had to walk a fine line between appearing genuinely distressed and not arousing suspicion.
“Amara,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, “I don’t know how much longer I can hold on. The power of the gem, it’s consuming me from the inside. I thought I could control it, but I was wrong.”
Amara’s eyes filled with compassion as she listened to Nathan’s words. She had no reason to doubt him, for she believed that Nathan was a victim of the very forces they had been battling against. Her heart ached at the sight of his apparent suffering. She had also been immersed in this supernatural world for a long while and so she believed everything he said with no surprises.
“I can’t bear to see you like this,” she replied, her voice trembling with emotion. “We have to find a way to help you.”
Nathan’s plan was working perfectly. Amara’s empathy and desire to help him were exactly what he had counted on. He knew that he needed her to willingly participate in the ritual, and her genuine concern for his well-being and her deep love for him was the key to her cooperation.
As Amara leaned in closer, her hand reaching out to touch his, Nathan’s eyes locked onto hers. He maintained the appearance of weakness, knowing that this moment of vulnerability would solidify Amara’s commitment to saving him.
“You’re the only one who can help me, Amara,” he whispered, his voice filled with desperation. “I’ve been researching a way to transfer the gem’s power, but I can’t do it alone. I need your strength, your love, to guide me through the ritual.”
Amara nodded, her determination growing stronger with each passing second. She had no inkling of the darkness that lurked beneath Nathan’s façade, nor the perilous journey that lay ahead. All she saw was a man she cared for, a man in need, and she was ready to do whatever it took to save him.
Nathan had successfully ensnared Amara in his intricate web of deception. The pieces of his plan were falling into place, and the ritual that would grant him unimaginable power drew nearer. As he continued to manipulate her emotions, he knew that their destinies were now inexorably intertwined, and there was no turning back.
With Amara’s unwavering commitment to help him, Nathan knew that he had achieved a significant milestone in his plan. He had successfully convinced her of his dire need for her assistance, and now he needed to guide her towards the completion of the ritual.
“Nathan, I’ll do whatever it takes to help you,” Amara affirmed, her eyes filled with determination. “Tell me what we need to do, and we’ll make it happen.”
Nathan mustered a weak smile, a gesture meant to convey gratitude and relief. “Thank you, Amara,” he said, his voice still trembling. “The ritual isn’t easy, but together, I believe we can succeed.”
He motioned for Amara to sit beside him, their shoulders almost touching. The candles in the room flickered, casting dancing shadows on the walls, adding an eerie ambiance to the proceedings.
“The first step,” Nathan began, “is for us to connect on a deep level, to strengthen the bond between us. Our love and trust will be the catalyst for the ritual.”
Amara nodded, her gaze locked onto Nathan’s. She reached out, taking his hand in hers, and their fingers intertwined. In that moment, their connection deepened, and Nathan could feel the warmth of her touch, the sincerity of her intentions.
“The next part is more challenging,” Nathan continued. “We have to tap into your immense power as Arcata’s reincarnation. This power lies dormant within you, waiting to be awakened.”
Amara furrowed her brow, uncertain of how to access this hidden reservoir of strength. She had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, but she went along with it. “But how do we do that?”
Nathan closed his eyes briefly, as if summoning the knowledge he needed. “It involves meditation and visualization. I’ll guide you through the process. You need to reach deep within yourself, to that place where your true power resides.”
As they began the meditation, Nathan’s instructions led Amara into a state of focused concentration. They breathed in unison, their energies aligning, and Amara could sense a wellspring of power awakening within her, a force she had never tapped into before.
Nathan marveled at the progress they were making. Amara’s innate power surged, responding to her determination and his guidance. He knew that this was a pivotal moment in their endeavor.
“Now, Amara,” Nathan whispered, “we move to the final step. The gem of Destruction holds immense power, but it must be willingly transferred. You have to reach into your heart and offer your love and power to the gem, and it will respond.”
Amara hesitated for a moment, her eyes searching Nathan’s for reassurance. With a reassuring nod from him, she closed her eyes and focused on the gem clutched in his hand. She visualized her love and strength flowing from her heart, a radiant energy that enveloped the gem.
The room seemed to crackle with energy as Amara’s power met the gem’s ancient magic. The gem pulsed with a newfound vitality, absorbing Amara’s essence willingly. Nathan felt the surge of power coursing through him, filling the void that had haunted him for so long.
As the ritual concluded, Amara opened her eyes, a mixture of awe and exhaustion in her gaze. She had given willingly of herself, unaware of the true implications of her actions. She couldn’t even recall or process all that had just happened.
Nathan, on the other hand, felt invigorated and more powerful than he had ever been. The gem of Destruction now resonated with him, its dark energy harnessed to serve his desires.
“Thank you, Amara,” he said, his voice no longer trembling but resonating with newfound authority and he gave a wicked grin, knowing that his plan had worked completely well. “You’ve granted me a gift beyond measure.”
Amara smiled weakly, still processing the intensity of the ritual. She had no inkling of the consequences that lay ahead, nor the darkness that now lurked within Nathan, but she felt dizzy from all this.
But just as Nathan was in the midst of celebrating his plan’s success, he felt something, something that he should not have. His eyes widened with shock.
