Chapter 40: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Harper slumped roughly into a chair. She cried there, letting out all the emotions she was feeling. Time and again, she had been betrayed by her own husband. She had tried with all her might to accept Logan as her husband, but he always made her feel unappreciated.
The door opened and Logan appeared behind it.
Harper quickly wiped her tears. She tried to erase the traces of crying from her face. She didn’t want to look weak in her husband’s eyes.
Logan stared at her with such intensity. His breathing sounded very rough. He wanted to approach her and try to calm her down. However, he didn’t want to make Harper feel uncomfortable.
Harper tried to look busy by searching for something on her desk. Meanwhile, her tears kept falling without her realizing it. Again and again she wiped her tears away, but they kept falling without her noticing.
Logan walked over to his chair. He sat down and tried not to pay too much attention to Harper.
There was a knock at the door from outside, followed by the arrival of Christian and Brooke.
“Sir, I’ve done as you instructed. Those who talk shit about the lady have been fired, and we’ve ensured they’ll never work at any company that partners with Ibis Corp." Christian reported.
“Good. The other employees will learn a lesson from this; they’ll be more careful with what they say when they meet their superiors.” Logan looked satisfied.
“I’m sorry, sir. I’ll make sure something like this never happens again. I should have issued a warning beforehand.” Brooke spoke politely.
“It’s not your fault at all. This is beyond your responsibility.” Logan looked calm.
“What about the lady?” Brooke turned to look at Harper, who was busy by herself. She still hadn’t stopped crying.
Logan looked at his wife too. In truth, he couldn’t bear to see Harper crying like that. He wanted so badly to hug her.
“You can leave. She needs some time alone to process what’s happening.” Logan said firmly. He didn’t want to disturb Harper’s peace.
Christian and Brooke nodded at the same time. They got up and left.
Logan stood up. He grabbed a box of tissues and held it out to Harper.
Harper looked up, staring at Logan with a questioning expression.
“Seeing you cry breaks my heart.”
“Isn’t this exactly what you wanted?” Harper replied sharply. She stood up and walked out of the room.
She hurried toward the restroom. There, she splashed water on her face to calm herself down a little.
“Brooke, why were we fired? You’re the one who said Mr. Thompson wanted us to humiliate his wife—why were we instead dismissed in such a disgraceful manner?”
Harper was shocked to hear those words. She turned off the faucet and tried to eavesdrop on the conversation outside.
“That’s right, you owe us an explanation. Why is Mr. Thompson angry after we insulted that slut?” another woman protested.
“Calm down. This is just a tactic to save Mr. Thompson’s face in front of the other employees. He’s satisfied with your performance. Even though you’re being fired, you’re getting a hefty payout. With this money, you can move to another city to start a new life. There’s 10 million dollars on this card; split it evenly. That’s more than enough.” Brooke responded casually.
Harper’s fists were clenched tightly. Her face flushed as she held back her anger.
She wondered what mistake she had made that would make Logan want to ruin her life like this.
As for their divorce, only the two of them knew about it. No one else was aware of their plans to divorce. This proved that Logan was indeed the one orchestrating everything.
Harper couldn’t take it anymore. Her self-respect was not for sale.
“So all this time, he was just putting on a show. I was the fool who walked right into his trap. Of course, there’s no way someone could be that good and patient. My father was right; he must have done all this for a specific purpose," Harper said to herself.
Harper stared at her reflection in the mirror. The scar on her face from that accident hadn’t fully faded yet. She looked a mess now, a far cry from her former self.
Harper laughed bitterly. “Didn’t I marry him to destroy his family? Why is it my family that’s been destroyed instead?” she said in a hoarse, trembling voice. Her fingertips clenched the edge of the sink.
The door opened as several women entered.
“Ma’am, you’re here? You didn’t hear anything, did you?” Brooke put on an innocent face.
Harper glared at her.
“Do you think Mr. Thompson really cares about you? He’s just pretending so you’ll stop bothering his son.” One of the women said.
“You didn’t know, did you? This morning’s court ruling found Mr. Ethan not guilty. Mr. Thompson brought you here today so you wouldn’t cause a scene in court.” Another woman chimed in.
“You’re so naive if you think Mr. Thompson loves you. Many women have tried to seduce him, but none of them succeeded. In his heart, there’s only Mr. Ethan’s mother. You’ll always just be a plaything.”
They laughed at her.
“Don’t be like that. You shouldn’t be rude to her; after all, she’s Mr. Thompson’s lawful wife. You have to respect her.” Brooke spoke softly. She clearly seemed to be defending her to protect the image she’d built up all this time.
Harper didn’t say a single word. Her fists were clenched, her jaw set. She walked past them with a fire burning in her chest.
The woman with the beautiful eyes entered Logan’s room, her emotions at a boiling point. She gave no response when Logan greeted her with a smile.
Harper grabbed her bag from the table, then walked out of the room.
“Where are you going? I’ll have Robin drive you.” Logan followed her, pulling his phone out of his pocket.
Harper stopped in her tracks. She turned to face Logan with a murderous glare.
“Stop putting on a show in front of me. You know how disgusting your behavior is. Aren’t you satisfied with humiliating me yet? If you want to ruin my life and my family’s… well done, you’ve succeeded.”
“What are you talking about? I don’t understand.” Logan looked at her, confused.
“Hurry up and finalize our divorce. I never want to see you again.” Harper said firmly, then continued on her way.
“Harper, I think you’ve misunderstood me. Let’s talk this through calmly.” Logan tried to stop her. He grabbed Harper’s arm tightly.
Smack!
Harper slapped Logan hard across the face.
“Don’t you ever touch me! You know, I hate you more than anyone in this world. Let’s never see each other again!”
