Chapter 39: The second misunderstanding
Logan frowned as he looked at his wife. He had no idea what he’d done wrong to make Harper act that way again. Hadn’t they made up just this morning?
Harper turned and walked toward her desk, which Logan had set up on the right side of the luxurious room. Logan had arranged a special space for her in the same room as his own so he could spend more time with his wife.
The beautiful woman didn’t ask for confirmation at all. She sat down immediately after seeing her nameplate lying on the desk, a sign that it was her workstation.
Logan could only be patient. He returned to his desk. He opened the lunchbox Harper had brought. This was the first time in decades he’d felt what it was like to be given a packed lunch by his wife. It felt incredible, indescribable.
Logan began to taste it. Although it tasted a bit bland, Logan still enjoyed it. Because it was a meal made by Harper’s own hands.
There was a knock on the door from outside. This was followed by Brooke’s arrival, carrying several important folders.
“Sorry to interrupt, sir. There are some documents that need to be signed,” Brooke said politely. However, her eyes seemed fixed on the lunchbox on the table.
Logan didn’t like having food or drinks on his desk, because crumbs or spills could damage the important files there. Or they might attract little food-seeking ants. However, it seemed that rule didn’t apply now.
Just by looking at the lunchbox, Brooke could tell it was the packed breakfast Harper had brought.
“Just put it there; I’ll sign it after I finish breakfast," Logan replied casually.
“Yes, sir.” Brooke placed the folder on top of the stack of folders on the desk, then turned to leave.
“Mrs. White, please buy a small gift for the employees. Distribute them to them on Mrs. Thompson’s behalf. It’s her first day on the job; I want them to welcome her warmly.” Logan pulled a card from his pocket and handed it to Brooke.
Though she wasn’t happy about it, Brooke did as Logan asked.
“It seems all bosses have a special relationship with their secretaries,” Harper remarked sarcastically after Brooke left.
Logan didn’t respond. He continued to enjoy his breakfast until he finished. He tidied up his desk after finishing the breakfast his wife had packed for him.
“Thanks for the food,” Logan said with a smile. He looked at his wife with tenderness.
Harper fell silent. Given the way she’d acted, how could Logan still be so gentle with her? Was he just indifferent, or was it love that made him act that way?
“I’ll take you on a tour,” Logan said as he picked up the folders Brooke had brought earlier. He skimmed through them, then signed all the documents in no time.
They stepped out of the room after Logan finished signing.
Logan began showing her each room one by one. He explained every detail. That was supposed to be the supervisor’s job, but he wanted to handle it personally for his wife.
After touring every room, Logan asked all the staff to gather.
“Mrs. Thompson will be working here today. Please cooperate," Logan announced briefly.
“These are gifts from Mrs. Thompson; please take one each.” Brooke approached, carrying a box filled with a stack of gifts. A few security guards also came over carrying other boxes.
They took them in an orderly and organized manner.
“Thank you, ma’am. You’re so kind—on your first day of work, you’ve already bought us these viral pastries. I tried to stand in line to buy some a few times, but the line was so long and I didn’t have enough time.” One of the female employees offered her praise. She held up the box of pastries in her hand.
Harper just gave a small smile.
“Ma’am, now we know why Mr. Thompson stole his own son’s fiancée. You’re absolutely perfect. Not only beautiful, but also kind-hearted.” Another employee chimed in.
The smile that had been etched on Harper’s lips vanished instantly. She didn’t like people discussing her past with Ethan. If only memories could be erased, she would love to erase all the memories she shared with her ex-fiancé.
Harper clenched her fists tightly. She tried to neutralize her feelings. She couldn’t afford to make a bad impression on her first day of work there.
“Please bear with me. I’m new here, so there’s a lot I don’t know yet.” Harper tried to be friendly.
“Ma’am, you’re the daughter of one of the richest people in Nara. Your husband is also one of the richest people in this city. Why do you still have to work from the bottom like us? Shouldn’t you just be having fun with your socialite friends?” More comments began to surface.
Hearing that, Harper’s mood grew even darker.
“I just want to gain some experience,” Harper tried to reply with a smile.
“Isn’t it because you and Mr. Thompson have a bad relationship? Everyone in this town knows your marriage isn’t going well. I heard you two want to get a divorce? Is that true? Maybe the gossip all this time is true—you married Mr. Thompson because you were after his money.” The comments were getting increasingly out of control.
Harper’s eyes began to redden. She was holding back tears and anger. So this was what Logan had in store for her? It seemed that humiliating her at the banquet hadn’t satisfied Logan, so he was humiliating her again at the office.
“Ma’am, you don’t come from a poor family. Why would you do something so immoral? Flirting with his son, then marrying his father to climb the social ladder. Isn’t that just too cheap?”
Harper didn’t answer. She could no longer hold back her emotions, so she turned and walked away. She ran, wiping away her tears.
“This is Mrs. Thompson’s first day working here. Why do you have to make such nasty comments? She’s the owner’s wife—you should respect her and keep your filthy mouths shut!” Brooke snapped.
Logan watched his wife’s back as she walked further away from him. It pained him to see his wife humiliated by his own employees.
“Brooke, you know the gossip going around right now. Mrs. Thompson is willing to stoop to low tactics just to climb the social ladder.” One of the women defended herself.
“Take care of them all. I don’t want to see them at Ibis Corp anymore.” Logan snapped at Christian, then turned and walked away to catch up with his wife.
