Chapter 69: Sixty-nine

"Alex, what's going on?" Verly answered, her voice laced with a mix of curiosity and concern.

"Verly, I have some news," Alex said, his voice low and urgent. "I just got back to the palace and I overheard some things. Alana is now sleeping in Damien's chambers and things seem to be going well between them."

Verly's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean? How well?"

"I don't know the details, but it seems like they're getting closer. And Alana is suspicious of me, she doesn't trust me."

Verly's mind raced. This was not good. She needed to come up with a plan, and fast.

"Alex, we need to come up with something more visible this time around. We can't afford to lose Damien," Verly said, her voice firm.

"I agree, but we need to be careful. Alana is not one to be underestimated," Alex warned.

Verly was about to respond when a maid knocked on her door. "Lady Verly, your mother has summoned you to her study."

Verly's heart skipped a beat. What could her mother want? "I'll call you back, Alex. I need to go."

She ended the call and made her way to her mother's study, her mind racing with possibilities.

"Mother, what's going on?" Verly asked, trying to sound calm.

Her mother smiled, her eyes gentle. "Verly, I have something important to discuss with you. You see, Alana is your sister."

Verly's eyes widened, her mind reeling. How did her mother know? She quickly composed herself, trying to pretend to be surprised.

"Sister? But how...?"

Her mother held up a hand, stopping her from asking more questions. "That's not all, Verly. I know what you've done."

Verly's heart stopped. What could her mother possibly know? She tried to keep her expression neutral, but her mind was racing with fear.

"What do you mean, mother?" Verly asked, trying to sound innocent.

Her mother's smile grew wider. "We'll discuss that later, Verly. For now, let's just say that I know everything."

"Alex, what's going on?" Verly answered, her voice laced with a mix of curiosity and concern.

Verly paced back and forth in her room, her mind racing with possibilities. She couldn't let Alana win, not now, not ever.

"Alex, I need you to find out more information. I need to know what's going on in that palace," Verly said, her voice determined.

"I'll see what I can do," Alex replied. "But Verly, be careful. Alana is not someone to mess with."

Verly laughed. "I can handle her, Alex. Don't worry about me."

Just then, a maid knocked on her door. "Lady Verly, your mother has summoned you to her study."

Verly's heart skipped a beat. What could her mother want? "I'll call you back, Alex. I need to go."

Verly felt a surge of anger, but she pushed it down. She needed to stay calm, needed to think.

"I don't know what you're talking about, mother," Verly lied, trying to sound convincing.

Her mother laughed. "Don't play dumb, Verly. I know all about your little schemes. And I'm telling you, it needs to stop."

Verly's mind raced. What did her mother know? And how was she going to get out of this one?

"Mother, I don't know what you're talking about," Verly repeated, trying to sound convincing.

Her mother sighed. "Verly, we'll discuss this later. For now, just know that I'm watching you. And I won't hesitate to take action if necessary."

Verly felt a chill run down her spine. She knew she had to be careful, had to tread lightly. But she couldn't back down now, not when she was so close to getting what she wanted.

"I understand, mother," Verly said, trying to sound submissive.

Her mother nodded. "Good. I'm glad we understand each other, Verly. Now go, I have other matters to attend to."

Verly left her mother's study, her mind racing with possibilities. She knew she had to be careful, had to watch her back. But she couldn't give up now, not when she was so close to getting what she wanted.
