Chapter 158 Rogue Assault Intensifies
POV: Luna
Three days after the full moon battle, we were still recovering.
The Academy looked like a war zone. Damaged buildings. Broken wards. Exhausted students.
The architects had escaped, but we'd stopped their ritual. Saved my Eclipse power from being stolen.
For now, that was enough.
Cole was in maximum security. Magical suppression. Isolation. Under constant guard.
The Headmaster had promised to investigate his family's situation. To find out if they were really being held hostage or if that was another manipulation.
I didn't know what to believe anymore.
"You're brooding again," Liam said, finding me on the roof.
"I'm always brooding. It's my default state."
"Fair point." He sat beside me. "How are you really doing?"
"Tired. Confused. Angry. Pick one."
"All of the above?"
"Yeah. All of the above."
Through the mate bond, I felt his concern. His desire to help.
"The architects will be back," I said. "This isn't over."
"I know. But we're more prepared now. We know what they want. How they operate."
"Do we? Because I feel like we're always one step behind. Reacting instead of anticipating."
"Then we change that. We start investigating proactively. Find them before they find us."
He was right. We needed to go on the offensive.
"Gather the pack," I said. "We need to strategize."
Within an hour, everyone was assembled in my dorm room.
"The architects want my Eclipse power to break the seal," I said. "So we need to figure out their next move. Where they'll strike. How they'll attack."
"They'll need another ritual," Sienna said. "Similar to the full moon one. Specific timing. Specific components."
"When's the next optimal time for that kind of magic?" Aria asked.
Sienna consulted her books. "Eclipse. Solar or lunar. Next lunar eclipse is in two weeks."
"So we have two weeks to prepare," Nova said.
"Or they attack sooner with a less optimal ritual," Lyric added.
"Either way, we fortify defenses. Train harder. Prepare for anything."
We spent the next few days doing exactly that.
Extra combat training. Magical defense drills. Coordinated pack exercises.
Selene trained with us, getting better at controlling her royal magic. Better at channeling it through me without destabilizing the seal.
Aiden integrated into our pack dynamics. His chaotic fighting style actually complemented our coordination.
Even Darius helped, organizing the senior students into defensive units.
The whole Academy was becoming militarized. Preparing for war.
Then, on the fourth day, the attack came.
No warning. No buildup. Just sudden, overwhelming violence.
Rogues poured through breaches in the wards. Dozens of them.
But these were different. Smarter. More coordinated.
"They're using pack tactics!" Aria shouted.
She was right. The rogues were working together. Flanking. Coordinating attacks.
Someone was directing them. Commanding them.
"Protect the princess!" I ordered through the pack bonds.
My friends formed a protective circle around Selene.
I shifted and engaged the nearest rogues.
They were faster than before. Stronger. Enhanced with more powerful dark magic.
"Luna, watch out!" Liam's voice came through the mate bond.
I dodged just as a rogue lunged from my blind spot.
Liam took it down before it could recover.
"Thanks!"
"Always!"
We fought back to back. Covering each other's weaknesses. Amplifying each other's strengths.
Around us, students were fighting desperately.
Some were winning. Others were being overwhelmed.
"We need to find whoever's controlling them!" I said.
"There!" Aiden pointed to a rooftop. A figure stood there, hands raised. Dark magic flowing from them toward the rogues.
"I'll go!" I said.
"Not alone!" Liam protested.
"You're needed here! Keep the students safe!"
Through the mate bond, I felt his reluctance. But also his acceptance.
"Be careful!"
I ran toward the building and climbed.
The controller was still there, focused on directing the rogues.
I got close before they noticed me.
When they turned, I gasped.
It was one of the architects. The female one who'd been at the full moon ritual.
"You," I growled.
"Me." She smiled coldly. "Did you really think we'd give up after one failure?"
"What do you want?"
"The same thing we've always wanted. Your power. Your bloodline. Your key to the seal."
"You'll never get it."
"We already have a backup plan. Multiple backup plans. You can't stop all of them."
She raised her hands and the rogues intensified their attacks.
Below, I heard students screaming.
"Stop this!" I demanded.
"Make me."
I attacked with Eclipse power.
She blocked easily. "You're strong. But untrained. Unrefined. You have no idea what you're truly capable of."
"Then teach me. Help me understand. Instead of stealing what you could learn."
"Why would we teach you when we can simply take what we need?"
She sent a wave of dark magic at me.
I dodged and countered.
We fought across the rooftop. Magic clashing. Power meeting power.
She was good. Experienced. Centuries of practice.
But I had something she didn't.
Desperation. Love. People depending on me.
I drew on the pack bonds. On Liam's strength. On my friends' determination.
My Eclipse power surged, amplified by our connections.
The architect's eyes widened. "Impossible. You shouldn't be able to—"
I didn't let her finish.
I released everything in one massive burst.
She screamed as Eclipse power washed over her. Purifying. Cleansing. Destroying the dark magic that sustained her.
When the light faded, she was gone. Fled or destroyed, I couldn't tell.
Below, the rogues collapsed without their controller.
The battle was over.
We'd won. Again.
I climbed down and rejoined my pack.
"Everyone okay?" I asked.
"Mostly," Nova said, nursing a cut on her arm. "Nothing permanent."
"Selene?"
"I'm fine. Thanks to your friends."
Through the Guardian Bond, I felt her gratitude. Her growing confidence.
Liam approached, looking relieved. "You did it."
"We did it. Together."
We started cleaning up. Tending to wounded. Assessing damage.
That's when I noticed it.
Near where Selene had been fighting, carved into the ground, was a sigil.
Glowing faintly. Pulsing with residual magic.
"What is that?" Selene asked.
I knelt to examine it closer.
My blood ran cold.
It was Cole's magical signature. Unmistakable. Unique to him.
"This is Cole's magic," I said.
"But he's in custody," Aria protested. "Under magical suppression."
"Then how is his signature here?"
"Maybe it's old," Sienna suggested. "Left over from before."
"No. This is fresh. Active. Placed within the last hour."
We all looked at each other.
"He's still working with them," Nova said quietly. "Even locked up. He's still helping the architects."
"Or someone wants us to think he is," Liam said. "Framing him to divide us."
"Either way, we need answers."
We went to the Headmaster immediately.
He examined the sigil and his expression grew grim.
"This is definitely Cole's magic. But it shouldn't be possible. He's under full suppression."
"Could he have help? Someone on the inside bypassing the suppression?" Aria asked.
"Theoretically. But we've increased security. Limited access. Only senior faculty can approach his cell."
"Then one of the senior faculty is compromised," I said.
The Headmaster looked troubled. "I'll investigate. Quietly. We can't let whoever's helping him know we're aware."
"What about Cole himself?" I asked. "Can we question him?"
"I'll allow it. Under supervision. But be careful. He's proven himself capable of manipulation even in desperate circumstances."
We went to Cole's cell that evening.
He looked terrible. Thinner. Paler. Like imprisonment was eating him alive.
"Luna," he said when he saw me. "You came."
"We found your magical signature at today's attack. Want to explain how that's possible when you're supposed to be powerless?"
His expression shifted. Confusion. Then horror. "That's not possible. I haven't cast anything. Can't cast anything."
"Then how—"
"Someone's using my signature. Copying it. Framing me."
"Convenient excuse."
"It's the truth! Luna, I swear. I've been locked up. Suppressed. I couldn't orchestrate an attack even if I wanted to."
Through our old pack bond, I felt his sincerity. His fear.
He was telling the truth.
Or he was an even better liar than I thought.
"If you're innocent, then who's copying your signature?" Liam asked.
"I don't know. But someone with access to my magical pattern. My essence. Maybe someone who took samples during the full moon ritual."
"The architects," I realized.
"Exactly. They could be using my signature to make you distrust me. To isolate me from potential allies."
"Why would they bother? You're already locked up."
"Because they know you were considering helping me. Saving my family. If you think I'm still betraying you, you'll abandon that idea."
He had a point.
"Your family," I said. "Are they really in danger?"
"Yes. I swear. The architects have them. If you could just verify—"
"We're trying. The Headmaster's investigating."
"Thank you."
We left the cell and I felt more confused than ever.
"Do you believe him?" Liam asked.
"I don't know. Part of me wants to. Part of me thinks this is just another manipulation."
"Trust your instincts."
"My instincts are conflicted."
"Then trust mine. And I think he's telling the truth. Someone's setting him up."
"Why?"
"To keep us divided. To prevent us from working together against the real threat."
We headed back to the dorms.
But I couldn't shake the feeling that something bigger was happening. Something we weren't seeing.
The attacks were escalating. The architects were getting bolder.
And Cole's involvement, whether willing or not, was becoming a liability we couldn't afford.
Tomorrow, we'd need to take action.
Tonight, I just needed to rest.
To prepare for whatever came next.
Because the worst was still ahead.
I could feel it.
