Chapter 5

“Where is Damon?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find him!”

Leon leaned back and looked steadily at Tasha.

“I’m not his keeper. If he’s missing, we should call the police.”

“Sure. So they can investigate like they did with the robbery? Week after week with no leads. No clues. No help at all. And you think they’ll find him?”

“That’s all we can do.”

Tasha left in a hurry. Damon had not been the best husband, but he had provided for her and the children. Now he was gone, and what was she to do?

Leon watched her leave. He picked up the phone and dialed Mark.

“You there?”

“Yes.”

“Nice job. The wife has been handled. Do we need to worry about the girlfriend?”

“No.”

“Ok. Take a vacation and then come back home.”

On the other side of town, Arthur Vandenburg sat back in his chair. Robbery and embarrassment had been part of the plan. But now, a Black man was dead. The current political climate was ripe for an outcry.

He picked up the phone and dialed a number.

“Are you there?”

“Yes,” said Matt Stevens.

“The plan has changed. Start research on Leon Pace. He is the next target.”

“Understood.”
