Broken Chains
Everyone froze in dread as a black shadow raced toward the Blood Moon. For a time, the entire woodland fell silent. Then wolves from both groups began to howl in panic.
"What do we do?" Luna yelled over the noise. "Fenrir is coming!"
Kai helped Rowan get to his feet. The blue light blazed beneath their flesh, throbbing with power.
"We fight," Kai explained plainly. They turned to face the assembled wolves. Listen to me! "We don't have much time."
The terrified shrieking gradually died off. All eyes were drawn to Kai, whose blue veins shone in the red light of the blood moon.
"Fenrir thinks he's won, but he's wrong," Kai stated. "Elder Thorne was the traitor inside the traitor. "He pretended to care about pack laws, but all he wanted was power."
Alpha Silverfang stepped forward, free of Fenrir's influence. "Hear them, my wolves! Kai freed me from the shadow bound. "Their blood contains ancient power."
Aurora raced to her mate's side, tears in her eyes. "You're back," she said softly, caressing his face.
"Because of them," Alpha Silverfang explained, pointing at Kai.
Kai felt Rowan squeezing their hand. They could sense his strength streaming through their relationship.
"Both packs must band together now," Kai continued. "Fenrir is coming, and he'll bring shadows like you've never seen."
Just as Kai finished speaking, heavy clouds rolled overhead. The blood moon vanished behind them, leaving the clearing in darkness. Then a terrifying cry resonated across the treetops.
"He's here," Eira muttered, her face blanched with fright.
A enormous black wolf walked out of the forest. It was three times the size of a typical wolf, with flaming red eyes and shadows that dripped from its fur like black water. Sharp teeth glittered in the gloom as it roared.
"Fenrir," Elder Blackwood exclaimed.
The massive wolf's lips remained still, but a voice entered everyone's thoughts. "AT LAST, I AM FREE."
Wolves from both packs retreated away, whining with dread.
"Stand your ground!" Rowan stepped forward alongside Kai and shouted. "We fight together!"
Fenrir laughed, the sound resembling rocks grinding together. "Brave little puppies. BUT YOU'RE TOO LATE.
The shadow wolf grew even larger, gathering power from the hidden crimson moon above the clouds. Dark creatures erupted from the earth around him, resembling wolves with glowing blue eyes.
"The trials are still not over," Kai stated abruptly, as an idea formed. "Elder Thorne challenged us under pack law. We won, but there's one more issue to resolve."
Fenrir tilted his massive head. "YOU THINK PACK LAWS MATTER TO ME?"
"They should," Kai said forcefully. "Because I am challenging you, Fenrir. Right here. Right now.
The watching wolves let out gasps. Even Rowan appeared stunned.
"What are you doing?" he said softly across their relationship.
"Trust me," Kai replied.
Fenrir laughed again. "DO YOU CHALLENGE ME?" You are nothing. A HALF-BLOODY OMEGA."
"A half-blood with your blood," Kai clarified, extending their still-glowing palm. "I claim the right of blood challenge. Ancient law says you must accept."
Fenrir's ruby eyes narrowed. For a time, he appeared concerned. He then growled. "Very well. "I accept your challenge, LITTLE WOLF."
Kai took a step forward toward the center of the clearing. The crushed blue crystal in their hand became brighter.
"Kai, no!" Luna shouted out. "He'll kill you!"
"It's the only way," Kai explained quietly.
Fenrir prowled about Kai, his enormous paws leaving smoldering footprints in the grass. Shadow wolves circled, snarling and snapping.
"WHEN I KILL YOU, BOTH PACKS WILL BOW TO ME," Fenrir roared.
"And if I win," Kai responded, "you will leave these lands forever."
Fenrir laughed. "AGREED."
Without warning, the big wolf rushed. His jaws snapped where Kai had been standing a second earlier. But Kai was faster, sliding away and taking up a combat stance.
The blue glow under their skin had extended to engulf their entire bodies. Kai said, and their voice rang with power.
"Fenrir, you've hurt enough wolves. "Your time is up."
Kai lifted both hands. Blue light flashed, wrapping around Fenrir like chains. The shadow wolf howled in wrath, battling the blazing chains.
"Impossible!" he snarled. "HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS?"
"The blood of both enemy and master," Kai said. "Just like Eira said."
However, Fenrir possessed great strength. As he strained on the shadow chains, they began to fracture. Dark energy surged out of his body, opposing Kai's blue light.
Kai's arms shook with strain. They couldn't hold him for much longer.
"I need help!" they exclaimed.
Rowan was the first to come forward. He placed his palm on Kai's shoulder, and their relationship grew brighter. The blue bands around Fenrir became stronger.
"Together," Rowan answered.
Other wolves stepped forward one at a time. Luna. Eira. Aurora. Alpha Silverfang. Elder Blackwood. Pack members from both sides joined hands to form a circle around Kai and Rowan.
Power rushed between them all, tightening the blue cords that held Fenrir. The shadow wolf thrashed and howled, but was unable to break free.
"NO!" Fenrir roared. "THIS ISN'T POSSIBLE!"
"You forgot something important," Kai explained. "Pack represents family. And family strengthens us beyond any darkness."
Kai clasped their fists with one more surge of power. The blue cords tightened around Fenrir, causing the gigantic shadow wolf to shrink. His howls weakened as the chains drained his strength.
Soon, where the huge shadow wolf had stood, only a normal-sized black wolf with regular golden eyes remained. The shadow wolves around him vanished like mist in the sunshine.
The clouds above parted, showing the blood moon, which had returned to its natural crimson tint. The sun was rising, coloring the sky pink and gold. The blood moon was coming to an end.
Fenrir, now simply a regular wolf, hissed pathetically. "This isn't over," he hissed, his words no longer resonating in their brains.
"Yes, it is," Kai replied firmly. "According to ancient laws, I won the challenge. "You will leave these lands and never return."
Fenrir's eyes were filled with rage, but he couldn't violate the old law he'd agreed to. With a final growl, he turned and staggered into the jungle.
The gathered wolves started to cheer. Both packs celebrated together, their old animosity forgotten in the light of their common victory.
Rowan drew Kai into a close hug. "You did it," he muttered.
"We did it," Kai responded, snuggling into his warmth.
As the sun rose higher, throwing golden light across the clearing, Kai addressed both packs. "The bonds of the past have been broken. "We can create something new—together."
Wolves in both packs howled in agreement. Even Elder Blackwood gave her approval.
However, as the celebration proceeded, no one spotted a small shadow sneaking away from the clearing and following Fenrir's trail into the forest. No one saw the small blue spark still blazing in the midst of that shadow.
And no one heard the whispered promise carried on the morning breeze: "The blood moon will rise again."
