Chapter 23: Blood and Moon

"You find the traitor within the traitor."

Eira's words hung in the night air as wolves growled and circled her. The White Healer stood calmly, her silver hair shining under the moon.

"Capture her!" someone shouted. "She's with Fenrir!"

Luna stepped between Eira and the angry wolves. "Wait! Let her speak."

Kai studied Eira carefully. "Why are you here? Kai had seen you in a vision—working with the enemy."

"What you saw was true," Eira admitted. "But not the whole truth. I've been pretending to help Fenrir to learn his plans."

"Why should we believe you?" Rowan demanded.

Eira reached into her pouch and pulled out a small blue crystal. "Because I stole this from Fenrir's den. It controls the shadow binding Alpha Silverfang."

Aurora gasped. "Can it free my mate?"

"Perhaps," Eira said. "But we must act quickly. The blood moon rises at dawn—when Elder Thorne plans to do more than just defeat you in combat."

"What do you mean?" Kai asked.

"The blood moon is when magic is strongest," Eira explained. "Elder Thorne plans to use its power, plus the energy from your defeat, to break the final seal binding Fenrir's full strength."

Rowan growled. "We have to stop him."

"We will," Kai promised, squeezing Rowan's hand. "But first we need a plan."

Through the night, they prepared. Eira and Aurora worked with the crystal, searching for a way to break Fenrir's hold on Alpha Silverfang. Luna gathered the strongest fighters from both packs, ready to defend if Fenrir's shadows attacked. Marina helped Kai and Rowan train, pushing their newly strengthened bond to its limits.

"Focus on what you feel here," Marina told them, touching her heart. "Your strength flows between you now. Use it."

When Kai and Rowan touched, they could feel each other's thoughts, almost like sharing the same mind. They practiced fighting together, moving as one being instead of two separate wolves.

Dawn came too quickly. The sky turned blood red as the morning sun hit the full moon still visible on the horizon—the rare blood moon that happened only once every thirty years.

The clearing had been prepared for the trial. Both packs formed a large circle, with Elder Blackwood standing at the northern point as judge. Elder Thorne entered from the east, Alpha Silverfang following behind him like a shadow. The possessed alpha's eyes still glowed that unnatural blue, and he moved stiffly, like a puppet.

"The trial by combat will now begin," Elder Blackwood announced, her voice strong despite her age. "Elder Thorne has challenged Kai Blackthorn's right to lead. As is their right under pack law, Kai will fight alongside their proven mate, Rowan Silverfang."

Elder Thorne smiled coldly. "And I will fight alongside Alpha Silverfang."

Murmurs spread through the crowd. Everyone knew the alpha wasn't fighting by choice.

"This is wrong," Aurora protested. "My mate is under Fenrir's control!"

"The law doesn't specify that partners must be willing," Elder Thorne said with a cruel smile. "Only that they must be pack alphas."

Elder Blackwood looked troubled but nodded. "The law is clear. The combat will end when one side surrenders or cannot continue."

Kai and Rowan stepped into the circle, holding hands. Elder Thorne and the possessed Alpha Silverfang faced them from across the clearing.

"Begin!" Elder Blackwood called.

Elder Thorne raised his walking stick, and the crystal on top pulsed with dark energy. Alpha Silverfang charged forward with unnatural speed. Rowan barely had time to push Kai aside before his father slammed into him, sending him flying across the clearing.

"Rowan!" Kai shouted, feeling his pain through their bond.

Elder Thorne laughed. "Your little bond won't save you from Fenrir's power!"

Kai rushed to Rowan's side, helping him up. "We need to break the control over your father," they whispered.

Rowan nodded, blood trickling from his lip. "You take Elder Thorne. I'll handle my father."

They split up, circling their opponents. Kai faced Elder Thorne, who no longer looked like a frail old wolf. Dark energy pulsed through him, making him stand tall and strong.

"You're no alpha," Elder Thorne sneered. "You're just a half-blood omega who got lucky."

"And you're just a bitter old wolf who betrayed his pack," Kai shot back.

Elder Thorne roared with anger and swung his walking stick. Kai ducked, feeling the energy crackle over their head. They darted forward, slashing at Elder Thorne's legs with their claws.

Across the clearing, Rowan circled his father. "Dad, it's me," he pleaded. "Fight Fenrir's control!"

For a moment, Alpha Silverfang's eyes flickered, the blue glow dimming slightly. Then the glow returned stronger, and he attacked with renewed fury.

Through their bond, Kai could feel Rowan's pain—both physical and emotional. Fighting his own father was tearing him apart. Kai needed to end this quickly.

They focused on Elder Thorne, who was drawing more dark energy from the blood moon overhead. The old wolf was getting stronger by the minute.

"You can't win," Elder Thorne growled. "Fenrir's power grows with the blood moon. Soon, he'll be unstoppable!"

Kai dodged another blast from the walking stick, trying to get closer. They needed to knock that stick from his hands.

At the edge of the clearing, Eira whispered urgently to Luna: "It's ready. Get this to Kai!"

Luna nodded and darted along the edge of the combat circle, the stolen crystal hidden in her palm. She caught Kai's eye and flicked her wrist, sending the crystal skidding across the ground to stop at Kai's feet.

Elder Thorne didn't notice, too focused on gathering more power from the blood moon. Kai quickly scooped up the crystal.

"Crush it!" Eira called out. "Crush it and call to the bond!"

Kai didn't understand but trusted the healer. They squeezed the crystal in their fist until it cracked. Blue light spilled between their fingers, warm and pulsing like a heartbeat.

A strange feeling washed over Kai—a connection they'd never felt before. Not just to Rowan, but to something ancient and powerful.

"What is this?" they gasped.

"Your true heritage," Eira called back. "Fenrir is your ancestor too!"

The revelation hit Kai like a thunderbolt. That's why they could see Fenrir's plans in visions. That's why Elder Thorne had always feared them.

"Call to the blood bond!" Eira urged. "Command the shadows!"

Kai raised their glowing hand toward Alpha Silverfang, who had Rowan pinned to the ground. "By blood and moon, I command you to release him!"

The blue glow around Alpha Silverfang flickered, then dimmed. He stumbled back, shaking his head in confusion.

"What's happening?" he mumbled, looking around wildly.

"No!" Elder Thorne shouted. He aimed his walking stick at Kai. "You don't know what power you're playing with, child!"

A bolt of dark energy shot toward Kai, but Rowan leaped in front of them, taking the hit. He collapsed to the ground, his chest smoking.

"Rowan!" Kai screamed, dropping to their knees beside him. Through their bond, they could feel his life fading.

Elder Thorne laughed. "One down, one to go."

Rage filled Kai like never before. The crushed crystal in their hand pulsed in time with their heartbeat. They stood up slowly, blue light now coursing through their veins, visible beneath their skin.

"You've made a mistake, Elder," Kai said, their voice deeper, older somehow. "You forgot who I am."

"A pathetic half-blood," Elder Thorne spat.

"No," Kai replied. "I am the descendant of both Alpha Nightshade AND Fenrir himself. The blood of both your master and your enemy flows in my veins."

Fear flashed across Elder Thorne's face. "Impossible!"

"The shadows obey the blood," Kai said, raising both hands. The blue light spread from their body, forming a shimmering shield around Rowan's fallen form and extending toward Elder Thorne.

The old wolf raised his walking stick to defend himself, but the blue light engulfed it, crawling up the wood like living vines. The crystal atop the stick cracked and shattered.

"No!" Elder Thorne cried out as his power source exploded. He fell to his knees, suddenly old and frail again.

Kai stood over him, blue light still pulsing around their hands. "Surrender," they demanded.

Elder Thorne looked up, his eyes burning with hatred. Then, suddenly, he smiled. "I have one last trick, little wolf."

Before Kai could react, Elder Thorne bit down on something hidden in his cheek. Black foam bubbled from his mouth as he choked out his final words: "Fenrir... comes..."

Elder Thorne collapsed, his body convulsing. The light left his eyes as a dark shadow rose from his corpse—not his spirit, but something else. Something Fenrir had planted inside him.

The shadow creature hovered for a moment, then streaked toward the blood moon overhead. As it touched the red light, a terrible howl shook the clearing.

Miles away, in his hidden den, Fenrir opened his eyes. "The seal is broken," he growled. "At last."

Back in the clearing, Kai dropped to their knees beside Rowan, the blue light fading. "Please," they begged, pressing their glowing hand to his chest. "Don't leave me."

Alpha Silverfang, now free from control, joined them, his face twisted with grief. "My son," he whispered.

Through their bond, Kai could still feel a flicker of life. They poured their energy into that tiny spark, willing it to grow.

Rowan's eyes fluttered open. "Kai?" he whispered.

"I'm here," Kai said, tears streaming down their face. "I'm here."

A terrible roar shook the trees around them. All wolves looked up to see the blood moon turning black as shadow tendrils spread across its surface.

"What's happening?" Luna asked, her voice shaking.

Eira's face had gone pale. "Fenrir is coming. And now nothing can stop him."
