Chapter 39 “The Girl Who Came Back Wrong”
The world returns to me in fragments.
Light.
Cold air.
A distant ringing like the echo of breaking stars.
And then—him.
Aiden.
His hand is wrapped around mine so tightly that I feel the pulse of his heartbeat through our bond, steady and desperate, as though he’s trying to hold me here by force of will alone.
I blink slowly, the ceiling of the Moon Chamber swimming into focus. The silver runes carved into the walls glow faintly, reacting to my awakening. The room smells of rain and magic and Aiden.
A quiet breath escapes him — the kind of breath someone releases only after hours of not breathing at all.
“You’re awake…” His voice is hoarse, raw. “Elera, gods, you’re… you’re here.”
I try to speak, but my throat is sandpaper. What comes out is a croak.
Aiden is already lifting me, propping me gently against his chest, pressing a cup of cool water to my lips. His hands shake.
“How long…” I whisper.
“Three days.” He swallows hard. “Three days you weren’t moving, barely breathing. Three days since you tore your soul open to save mine.”
His voice breaks.
I touch his jaw, the stubble rough beneath my fingers. “I had to.”
“You almost died.”
“So did you.”
His eyes close for a moment. When he opens them, they glow faintly gold. His wolf is closer to the surface than he’s letting on.
I turn my head—and freeze.
Liam stands by the doorway, arms crossed, eyes shadowed with sleepless worry and something deeper… something painful. When he sees me looking, he straightens.
“You scared all of us,” he says softly. But the softness is meant for me — not Aiden.
Aiden stiffens beside me. I feel the tension coil in him like a drawn bowstring.
“Liam,” Aiden says with forced calm. “You can leave now. She needs rest.”
Liam’s jaw clenches. “I’m not your guard any longer, Aiden. I don’t take orders from you.”
The air shifts. I quickly place my hand on Aiden’s chest before he can respond.
“I’m okay,” I whisper.
For a moment, no one moves.
Then Aiden exhales slowly through his nose. “Fine. Stay. But stay quiet.”
Liam’s gaze flickers — anger, jealousy, resignation — but he nods.
The silence that follows is heavy.
I try to sit up on my own. Aiden immediately catches me before I slip.
“Careful,” he murmurs.
Something crackles under my skin. A low hum of energy, unfamiliar and too bright. I gasp, gripping the sheets.
Aiden’s eyes widen. “Elera?”
Magic bursts beneath my skin — not like before, not gentle or warm. This is sharp, electric, wild. The runes in the chamber flare as though they’re reacting to me, not protecting me.
“I feel… different,” I whisper.
The door slams open.
The Queen enters, followed by the Seer and three council elders. Their expressions shift when they see me awake — relief dampened by fear.
The Seer steps forward, staff humming. “Her aura is changed.”
“She unleashed ancient magic,” Elder Varron snaps. “None have survived such a thing. What if she’s unstable? What if she’s a threat—”
Aiden is out of his seat before the elder finishes speaking, his voice a low growl. “Say that again.”
“Aiden—” the Queen warns.
“No.” His gaze burns. “She nearly died protecting this realm. You will not speak of her as a danger.”
The council members shift uneasily under his fury. The Queen places a hand on Aiden’s arm, grounding him.
“Aiden, enough. Let the Seer examine her.”
I nod weakly. “It’s okay.”
The Seer approaches. Her hand hovers above my chest — not touching, but close enough that I feel her magic brush mine.
A shockwave blasts outward.
Everyone staggers.
The Seer gasps, eyes widening. “Her magic… it has evolved.”
Elder Varron snarls, “Into what?”
“Into something ancient,” the Seer whispers. “Something not seen since the First Moonfall.”
Aiden’s grip tightens on my shoulder. “Explain.”
The Seer looks at me with a mixture of awe and dread.
“Her soul didn’t break when she gave you her magic. It… rebuilt itself. Stronger. Wilder. She is no longer merely a wielder of lunar magic.”
My heart pounds. “Then what am I?”
The Seer bows her head. “A keystone.”
Aiden stiffens. “A what?”
“A being who can bind or unbind realms. Someone who can anchor magic itself.” She steps back, voice trembling. “A being ancient threats would kill to possess.”
Liam curses under his breath. “So she’s a target again.”
“More than before,” the Seer confirms. “And the entity that came for her — it will return. Stronger. Because it can now sense the power inside her. It will want to claim her, or destroy her.”
My stomach drops.
Aiden pulls me close, his voice a low snarl. “It won’t touch her.”
But the Seer shakes her head. “Prince… it has already breached one veil. It will try again.”
Elera…
The whisper curls through the chamber like smoke.
I shiver violently.
Aiden reacts instantly, his wolf surging to the surface, eyes flashing gold. “It’s near?”
“No,” the Seer says. “It’s remembering her. That alone is a threat.”
The council members look terrified. Elder Varron turns cold eyes on me. “We should—”
Aiden’s growl shakes the floor. “Finish that sentence. I dare you.”
Even the Queen steps between them. “Varron, enough. We will not threaten the girl who saved my son’s life.”
My breath trembles, and Aiden is instantly at my side again.
“Hey,” he whispers, cupping my cheek. “Look at me. Don’t listen to them.”
My hand rises to his wrist, trembling. “Aiden… I’m scared.”
His expression softens painfully. “I know. But I’m here. I’m not letting anything happen to you.”
Liam turns away, jaw tight.
Aiden strokes my cheek, his forehead pressing lightly against mine. “You came back to me. That’s all that matters.”
“Aiden—”
“No.” His thumb drags across my lower lip, gently but possessively. “I almost lost you. I won’t pretend anymore.”
My breath catches.
“Lost me?” I whisper.
He exhales shakily. “I love you, Elera. I have for longer than you realize.”
The confession steals the air from my lungs.
I open my mouth — but he doesn’t let me speak.
He leans in. Slowly. Giving me a chance to pull away.
I don’t.
Our lips meet — soft, slow, then deepening with all the desperation he’s held back for weeks. His hand slides to the back of my neck, pulling me closer as though he fears I’ll disappear again.
My fingers curl in his shirt, holding him just as fiercely.
But then—
A surge of energy blasts outward from my body.
Aiden is thrown back a step. The runes explode in silver light. The room trembles, and a sharp, agonizing pulse rips through my chest.
“What’s happening?” I gasp.
The Seer shouts, “Her new power — it’s unstable!”
A vision slams into me.
A dark wolf.
Eyes like burning coal.
Standing at the border of Silverfang.
Watching me.
Calling to me.
I scream.
Aiden catches me before I collapse, cradling me against him as my magic flickers violently under my skin.
“Elera!” His voice is raw. “Stay with me.”
My vision blurs. I cling to him.
“The wolf…” I gasp. “It’s coming.”
Aiden’s eyes widen. “What wolf?”
I swallow hard, my voice trembling.
“The shadow wasn’t alone.”
The room goes deathly silent.
The Seer whispers the words no one wants to hear:
“A second presence has crossed the veil.”
Aiden holds me tighter.
And this time—
he looks truly afraid.
