Chapter 50: An uninvited guest
Chapter 50: An uninvited guest
Viola still didn't understand why she was at Vance Sterling's vast and silent residence. Days had passed since she'd left the hospital, a strange blur of recovery and confusion. She had been trying to leave, to go back to her small apartment, to the familiar quiet of her own life. But every time, she was given weird excuses, both by Vance and his people.
Vance himself would simply state, "You're not fully recovered yet. The doctors recommend a quiet, stress-free environment." His tone left no room for argument. When she pressed his staff, Sam or the household manager, they would offer polite but firm reasons about her continued monitoring, the need for a stable environment, or simply that "Mr. Sterling insists." She felt like a bird in a gilded cage. She had no choice but to stay.
Fortunately, she wasn't completely idle. Vance had provided her with a top-of-the-line computer. It was sleek and powerful, allowing her to connect to her world, even from his grand living room. So, she dealt with urgent matters in the company, handling emails, reviewing reports, and making important decisions. It helped keep her mind busy, a small anchor of normalcy in her very unusual situation.
She also talked to her mother every day. Her mother's voice, though still tired, carried a note of hope. Even though her father was still unconscious, her mother knew that there was hope of him waking up any time from then. This news was a balm to Viola's worried heart, giving her strength and a reason to keep pushing, even in this strange, involuntary stay.
Viola found a rhythm in the quiet routine. She worked during the day, occasionally watching the news, always aware of Vance's comings and goings, though he rarely disturbed her unless it was to ask about her health or to bring her a meal personally. The massive living room, with its high ceilings and tasteful, expensive furniture, was usually filled only with the soft sounds of her typing.
As she was engrossed in her work, focused on a complex financial report, the peaceful silence of the living room was suddenly broken. She heard the distinct, sharp sound of heels clanking on the polished marble floor of the entrance hall, growing steadily louder. It wasn't the soft, almost silent tread of Vance's household staff, nor was it Vance's own firm, deliberate steps. This sound was sharper, more aggressive, echoing with a certain impatience.
Viola's brow furrowed at the rude intrusion. This was Vance's private residence, usually a fortress of quiet and order. Who would just waltz in making such a racket? It felt disrespectful, like an invasion of the carefully maintained peace she had grown accustomed to. She slowly raised her head to take a look, ready to offer a silent, disapproving stare to whoever dared to disturb her.
But the words died in her throat. A gasp almost escaped her lips. A look of amazement flashed in her eyes. The lady before her was truly beautiful. She was tall and slender, with striking features, perfectly styled hair, and a dress that looked straight out of a high-fashion magazine. Her makeup was flawless, highlighting piercing eyes and sharp cheekbones. She carried herself with an undeniable grace, a confident poise that commanded attention.
However, beneath the stunning beauty, there was a distinct, chilling aura. Viola, with her sensitive nature, felt it immediately. There was an air of viciousness and arrogance surrounding her. Her beauty was cold, almost predatory, like a magnificent lioness. Her eyes held a challenging glint, and her perfectly shaped lips were set in a thin, almost sneering line. She looked like someone who was used to getting her way, someone who rarely, if ever, faced defiance.
The lady's eyes, cold and assessing, swept across the grand living room, finally landing on Viola, seated quietly at the computer. A flicker of surprise crossed her face, quickly replaced by an expression of disdain, as if she had just spotted something utterly beneath her notice.
When the lady saw Viola, she arrogantly sauntered over to where she was seated. Each click of her heels was a deliberate, challenging sound on the marble, emphasizing her confident approach, her assumed superiority. She stopped a few feet from Viola, her chin tilted slightly upward, her gaze raking over Viola's simple, comfortable clothes, then back to her face, judging, dismissing.
"Who are you?" the lady asked, her voice clear and cutting, like ice. It wasn't a question seeking information, but a demand, a challenge, filled with an underlying threat. There was no warmth, no politeness, only cold, arrogant curiosity.
Viola felt a familiar sense of vulnerability, a sudden chill in the air. This woman's presence was as imposing as Vance's, but in a completely different, more hostile way. This wasn't the detached power of Vance; this was sharp, personal animosity, directed squarely at her. Viola, still weak from her ordeal, felt her heart quicken. She was trapped in Vance's house, and now, face to face with an unknown, beautiful, and clearly dangerous enemy. She instinctively knew this encounter would not be pleasant, and she wondered who this woman was and why she radiated such immediate hatred towards her. The quiet comfort of the living room had just been shattered, replaced by a cold, menacing tension.
