Chapter 23 More Important Things To Do
This was by far the most awkward it had ever been between the two of them. Usually, there was at least some sort of thread that they could pull themselves along to continue some semblance of a conversation, but this was disastrous.
Raina was fumbling so bad. Every time she tried to work enough courage to tell Kian that she was done with her monthly bleed, panic would punch her in the face. How would she even tell him?
Hey, Kian, I’m done bleeding. Let’s start breeding?
She cringed at that, shaking her head at that. Oh, that was sadly pathetic.
Less talk. More sex?
Oh, good grief, that was worse.
Let’s make you an heir?
That was just… obnoxiously awful.
It was hopeless. There was no sane way of telling a wolf this. At least, not for her, there was no sexy way for her to say what she needed to say. Sterling didn’t take account for that, did she?
Her eyes drifted and landed on Kian’s face. She took in the amused expression on his face and abruptly realized he had witnessed her entire internal dialogue. Oh great, this was spectacular! She so needed Kian to see her having a mental breakdown right now.
“You alright over there?” he chuckled, sipping his mug.
Her cheeks felt heat up. No, she was absolutely not. “I’m doing… great.”
Oh, no, she was definitely not. What made it ten times worse was that he even knew she was not, because that classic smirk slanted his mouth told her that he didn’t believe a word coming out of her mouth.
His eyes narrowed in on her, studying her for a moment. Nevermind. That was much worse. When he looked at her like he was strategizing his next move in battle, it made her more nervous. She didn’t like when he was looking at her like she was a puzzle for him to solve, because he wouldn’t stop. He would get it out of her. He always did. How could he read her so well?
Because he was her Alpha and he knew her like the back of his hand.
“Are you sure about that?” he asked. His body was relaxed, sitting on her sectional like she wasn’t having an internal crisis. She knew all too well that he was anything but relaxed. This was the calm before the storm. “I heard you visited your sister today.”
Her face burned. Oh, please don’t ask about that! She tried telling herself to breathe in and out to calm herself down.
“Yes, I did.” She nodded. Good, good, that wasn’t too bad, right? That came out calm and collected. Hopefully.
He bit his bottom lip before he asked: “What did you talk about?”
Oh, damn it.
Words escaped her.
She swallowed, immediately looking away from him. Her eyes drifted down to his lap and then she realized where her eyes had focused. Quickly tearing her eyes away from there, she made the mistake of looking right back up into his eyes. Of course, his eyes had been on her the entire time so he probably knew exactly where her eyes had just been, judging by the heated look in his eyes.
“Raina?” His voice was husky… and doing things to her that she wasn’t supposed to entertain. Wait. That was wrong. She was supposed to entertain with him. Together. “Raina, what did she say?”
That we need to have regular sex before my heat, because I’m going to be a sex fiend and it’s all your damn fault… Now only if she could actually say that aloud even if it was just so stupidly awkward.
She couldn’t say any of those words… or any words for that matter. Instead, her eyes flicked to his and her panic got the best of her. He quickly grabbed her when she tried to get up and run. It wasn’t even a surprise. He probably saw the signs way in advance and was ready for her sad attempt.
He planted her down on his lap. Biting her own lip to prevent herself from moaning, she tried not to grind herself down on him. She tried not to get caught up with his dick already hardening beneath her. She tried. Tried was the operative word. She really did try not to make everything so much harder than it needed to be, but there was nothing easy about this.
His hands caressed her hips before those fingers trailed up her body as her hands pressed down against his chest, leaving a path of fire in its wake. Her heart raced in her own chest. His eyes pinned hers in place as if he was daring her to accept the challenge.
“Tell me,” he demanded. His hands gripped at her arms, forcing them to bend. The move sent her impossibly close to him, too close. “Tell me what she said.”
She gulped. She knew he wasn’t going to let it go. She knew he knew what she told her. There was no way that he didn’t know. “That I need to...”
She trailed off, feeling her cheeks burning again. In that moment, it was like something took pity on her sorry self. His eyes misted over as his body tensed beneath her and she knew he was getting mindlinked.
“Damn it,” he growled as his eyes refocused.
“Duty calls?” she asked softly.
His eyes showed his absolute frustration. “I need to deal with this,” he grumbled as he gently lifted her and placed her down on the sectional next to him.
She could only nod her head. He sighed, getting up from where he was seated. His eyes swept over to her for a moment. It felt like he was battling himself to stay or leave before he tore away from her as if it pained him. Even though, she was partially relieved that something interrupted them, there was a bigger part of her that was disappointed at the swift change of events.
She sighed, feeling like her body was sobbing in its own frustration at not getting what it was promised. Well, it wasn’t like she couldn’t take care of the ache. It wouldn’t be anything comparable to the paradise that Kian could offer her, but it wasn’t like he’d be regularly satisfying her anyway.
She took her time, finishing up her tea and the little cookies that Sasha had put together. Her eyes flicked to the mug that Kian left. It reminded her of her failure. Even though her sadness swamped her, it did nothing to chill the pleasure burning through her or the way his touch felt on her body.
Damn it.
This was impossible.
Begrudgingly, she dragged herself to her bedroom. She was all alone in this giant room with a giant bed all to herself. She sometimes hated her body and how it reacted so needy for his attention. It was maddening so she’d give into the madness to keep her sanity. It wasn’t like he’d know what she was doing. He had other things, more important things, to do than to satisfy her needs.
He was an Alpha.
Of course, he had more important things to do.
Kian had received word from Sebastian and the surveillance department that there was this suspicious figure in their territory. The night guards and perimeter guards had chased after it. The new perimeter wall still had a little more to do before completion and the figure had managed to escape through that gap, scaling the diamond fence like an assassin. They had chased them until they crossed over into rogue territory.
Some of the Elites tailed whoever it was, but they soon lost track of them when they passed through to Twin Silver Crescent’s territory. He needed to get permission from Alpha Jayce, but he knew by the time they did, the figure would be long gone, probably just passing through their land. Alpha Jayce and him were allies having become fast friends and former roommates for those two grueling years at the academy. They had gone to the World Council’s Alpha Academy at their Institute of Excellence, where they were educated and trained in werewolf politics.
Sebastian was on the phone when Kian walked into his office near the training grounds. Sebastian looked up and relief was visible on his face.
“He’s here,” his Beta said to whoever was on the phone. “Alpha Jayce is on the phone.”
Kian nodded his head, quickly walking over to the phone to talk to his old friend. “Jayce?”
“Well, I had hoped it would’ve been for better circumstances,” Alpha Jayce chuckled and Kian couldn’t help the smile that crossed his face. “We did see someone breach our territory, but they never got close. They pretty much tiptoed the perimeter line until they disappeared into Nightclaw territory. Alpha Ridley isn’t picking up, but I suspect he’ll have news for us tomorrow.”
He sighed. “I’ll have my surveillance team compile video footage to send to you so you can compare footage.”
“Good idea,” Jayce agreed. “I’ll have my team compile footage too and send it over as well. I’ll call when I hear from Ridley.”
“Thanks.”
With that, Kian heard Jayce hang up and he looked down at the phone then sighed. This was not what he needed right now. He didn’t need this on top of everything else. Ever since the Rogue King was defeated, the packs and the rogues had been living in peace. Nothing since had disturbed the peacefulness until this happened. Maybe the rogues would give them some information too if they asked… obviously for a price, as expected.
Sebastian looked at Kian, waiting for him to focus on him. “I already mind linked Viktor to start compiling the footage.”
“Good,” Kian muttered. Who dared to trespass on multiple territories? If it wasn’t the rogues then who was it exactly? Were they even werewolves?
He handed Sebastian his phone and his Beta took it, pocketing it quickly. This was not how he planned to spend his night. He had been so close to getting Raina to crack only to be pulled away just before she did. Sebastian rushed off, closing the door behind him. Now alone in his office, he growled in frustration at his luck.
Just as he thought his luck had hit the lowest point imaginable, he felt a random roll of pleasure that took him by surprise as it sent shivers up his spine. His eyes widened in confusion when the pleasure wrapped around him, causing his own body to react accordingly. For fuck’s sake, this couldn’t be happening.
He sucked in a breath as he forced himself to move. On shaky legs and hands grasping the surface of his desk, he made his way around his desk to plop down in his seat. Feeling her pleasure burning through his veins, he did everything in his willpower not to give into his own pleasure.
She didn’t know he knew. She didn’t know he could feel her pleasure. That was only something that true mates could do. If he gave into it, she would know that he was pleasuring himself while she was getting off. She might not even put two and two together, but he wasn’t going to risk it.
Instead, he gritted his teeth while hunching over his desk. His hand gripped the arm rests of his chair as he waited it out, feeling the waves of intense pleasure burning within him. He growled low, squeezing his eyes shut while he forced himself to stay put. This doing absolutely nothing was killing him especially when he knew what she was doing.
A part of him wanted to grab his hard dick and give into that irresistible temptation, because her pleasure was wreaking havoc through him. A huge part of him wanted to hunt her down and just have his way with her right now. Fuck the consequences. Instead, he stayed still.
When she shattered, he struck both his fists hard against his desk, causing cracks to fragment the surface. Another desk casualty, he realized, glaring down at the brokenness of it through his rage. He was furious at the mysterious stranger’s appearance. He could’ve been fucking his stubborn mate right now. Instead, he had to deal with a broken desk and wait until his dick softened in his pants while his mate’s pleasure cooled within his body.
