Chapter 144: Distrust
Chapter 144: Distrust
Sylvia's pov.
I stared at his call longer than necessary, biting the corners of my lips, this wasn't really the time to be ignoring his calls any longer. I didn't mind if the pack found out about it, this was important.
It involves both our lives and the lives of other wolves who were confined in that space.
Just as I picked up the call, the doors to Michael's house were pushed open, Isaac badged in unannounced.
Silence ensued, both in the other end of the call and in the room. I froze with my phone pressed against my ear.
“What the hell are you doing here?” The annoyance in Isaac's voice couldn't have gone unnoticed. His gaze shifted between me and Michael suspiciously, “Why is she here?”
Ezekiel thought this was the perfect time to speak, “Are you kidding me Sylvia? You disappeared, no calls, no texts so you could be with him?”
My face scrunched up at his words, “What!! Wait no Ezekiel…” I rushed to explain and clear up immediately.
“Ezekiel,” Isaac chuckled loudly, “You have got to be kidding me.”
I wasn't bothered about Isaac at the moment, “Ezekiel it's not what it sounds like, I…” before I could explain any further, the beeps echoed, announcing that the call had been hung up.
I stared at my phone screen in disbelief, my breathing ragged as I tried dialing his number again, but it wouldn't go, “No, no, no Ezekiel please don't.”
Don't what? Do the exact same thing you did to him?
This couldn't be happening, I was hyperventilating now, everything was occurring at the same time.
Why?
Why?
Why now?
The more I tried his number the more I lost hope, felt like the walls were caving in on me, like the room was spinning.
I kept muttering to myself, praying that he picked up, wishing that I had said something, wishing that Isaac hadn't complicated the whole issue.
“Isaac, what are you doing here?” Michael attended to Isaac while I had a mental breakdown.
There was a potential threat to our lives. The thought that it might be contagious sent a wave of panic through me. What if I turned into a wild wolf? What if I lost myself and attacked the people I cared about?
Oh Goddess.
The words escaped in a shaky whisper.
“What's going on here?” Isaac asked again, his brows knitting together as his gaze flickered between Michael and me. “I came here to find out what exactly you were discussing with the council.”
Isaac continued pressing for answers while Michael attempted to respond, offering only vague explanations that danced around the truth instead of addressing it directly. But I wasn't listening anymore.
Nothing made sense.
Fear settled deep in my chest, tightening with every passing second, I needed to get out of there because it was suffocating.
I brushed past both of them, finding my way out but even the air wasn't enough, “I just need some time alone.”
Michael and Isaac were hot on my heels despite ignoring their questions as I made my way to nowhere in particular.
Sylvia, you need to pull yourself together, I just need to take a deep breath.
I chanted in my head as I came to a stop a few steps from the forest line, staring into the abyss. This wasn't the time to be alone in the forest.
I was thinking too much, “Sylvia, calm down, he'll probably call back and nothing's going to happen to him, nothing's going to happen to you either,” I whispered.
Michael's voice echoed from behind me after a few minutes had passed, “You okay?” His hands gently slid over my shoulders.
I conjured up the best smile I could, “Yeah, I am, I just needed air.”
Isaac was staring at me and I couldn't help but feel a sense of anger rising inside of me at his presence, if it weren't for him, perhaps Ezekiel wouldn't…
Let's not jump into conclusions yet.
“So can someone please explain what's going on?” His irritating voice questioned.
I shrieked back momentarily in surprise, brows arched, “What's going on?” My gaze drifted to Michael wondering if he needed to know, but he was the alpha's son so….
Michael briefed him on what we had discussed, “But we can't let the alpha or anyone else know about this yet.”
“And why not?”
I'm starting to think Isaac didn't really inherit the smartness from his parents, “Maybe because if they found out about us being the only ones turning to wild wolves, they would probably isolate us and treat us like outcast.”
Not like I minded.
The pack wasn't very known for accepting anything outside of the normal.
Sanders would probably be reeling in joy and charge to take over our arrest, but if he had to do that then his own daughter would be caught in the mix.
The silence settled between us until Michael voiced the question that troubled my heart, “So…what are we going to do now?”
“We can start by keeping tabs on the others and making sure they are okay, you and I will focus on finding out the cause of this.”
Michael was more helpful than I thought, if it weren't for him, I wouldn't have been able to figure this out.
The other part was my job, which meant getting in touch with Ezekiel and perhaps his help as well. If not for anything at least for the sake of our lives.
The plan was set and we dispersed evenly, at least that was what I thought until I noticed Isaac falling in step with me, causing me to halt in my tracks, “Is there something I can help you with, sir?”
Looking at him already brought the memories of all the horrible things he had done and how much I hated him for it. His stoic hardened expression made it all the more worse.
A sigh escaped his lips, “I was hoping we could talk.”
