Chapter 126: Danger Arising

Chapter 126: Danger Arising

Sylvia's pov

Ezekiel walked through the doors of the diner, his eyes scanned the seats before picking one for himself afterwards his eyes landed on mine.

“What can I get for you?” I smiled while requesting for his order, but the smile on my face dropped when I saw the serious look in his eyes.

I dropped the tray in my hands on the table and slid into the curved booth seats, “What's wrong?”

A bad premonition fell atop me. Over a long while now, I had always prepared myself for the worst to come and so when it did, I wouldn't be hit too badly.

Ezekiel sighed deeply, “I received information from my pack, apparently, there have been sightings of strange people at the borders.”

My brows arched in question, “And, you think it might be the hunters?” I finished for him, my thoughts instinctively going to Peggy.

Speaking of my friend, she walked out of the back room, a tray of meals in her hand as she smiled and delivered the order to table 12.

My gaze narrowed into her, still finding it weird to work with her, knowing she may as well be carrying wolvesbane and also that she tried to fucking kill me.

Every time, I reminded myself that she didn't know it was me, but a puzzling question changed repeatedly in my head, “what if she knew it was me? Would she have still done it?”

The thought scared me, our friendship would be nullified. I still thought of her as a dear friend and this was worse because she was capable of snapping my head off my neck, or shooting a bullet.

Again.

Peggy sighted us and waved, her eyes lingering on Ezekiel but she only smiled and returned to the break room.

I informed him of the information I had currently gotten my hands on regarding Peggy and Dalton's relationship.

“If that's the case, she hasn't seen the footage yet, or perhaps she's just pretending,” we glanced in her direction for the last time before returning to our conversation.

A sigh escaped my lips, “I don't think so, if she had seen it she would definitely be gunning for my head, we still have a bit of time to warn the others in the pack that they are coming.”

I might not care about my pack, but my family still resided there, and they needed to be safe.

We remained in silence, each in our own thoughts, when Ezekiel muttered, “For the time being, I think we should keep our distance, just for a little while.”

My gaze narrowed.

“She already suspects me for some reason, we don't want her doing the same with you,” reasonable, that didn't mean I liked the idea a bit.

"So that's it?" I asked. "We're just going to pretend we don't know each other?"

"For now."

I leaned back into the seat, annoyance bubbling inside me.

The waitress inside me wanted to get up and continue working, but the wolf in me hated every second of this conversation. We hadn't even found a steady ground in our relationship and now we had to remain separated.

Again.

"You'll still call?" I found myself asking.

One corner of his lips lifted.

"Every day."

With that, Ezekiel walked out of the diner without a second look backwards, while I on the other hand grabbed my tray and returned to serving with an annoyed look on my face.

Peggy came out of the break room and noticed my not so jovial attitude, “Is something wrong? Did something happen between you and Ezekiel?”

There she went again, like a cop always on duty. It pissed me the fuck off that she was so privy when all of this was her fault to begin with.

“It's nothing really,” I shut her out.

I didn't know if I could trust her again, I didn't know if we could continue to remain friends any longer. We have been like mortal rivals since the beginning of time.

Sighing in defeat, I carried on with the orders and clocked out at the same time Peggy and Gary did, and we all made our way back to the school together.

Along the way, Gary out of blue said something that stopped me in my tracks, “Have you guys noticed the strange sounds around the school?”

Apparently, I wasn't the only one as I glanced towards Peggy and she seems to have also been taken aback by his sudden curiosity.

“What strange sounds?” She probed.

Gary shrugged, oblivious to the current situation he was in between Peggy, a hunter, and I, a werewolf, “I don't know, some people say they've been hearing growls around corners, here and there, no one really knows what's going on.”

This wasn't new for me as Micheal had informed me of this beforehand, but having Gary also mention it, meant it was serious.

“Perhaps they are just wild animals chased out of their homes by poachers or something.”

He couldn't have been closer to the truth, if it weren't for the hunters, I wouldn't even be attending this stupid school to begin with or be fighting for my fucking life.

Peggy egged him on more, but there's only so much he knew.

“I haven't heard the sounds myself but more people keep saying strange things are happening, and most of it point to animals with sharp claws, perhaps a bear, or maybe a mountain lion,” he seemed rather excited, even wishing if he could get to see one of them.

“Just ... .be careful okay, we don't know what's out there for now,” I cautioned him, to which Peggy also agreed.

Gary didn't seem to take us seriously,  “Y'all should relax, it's not like they are going to eat us or something,”
