Chapter 7: The Sanctum Breach

The tunnels shook as alarms howled through the Iron Sanctum, a metallic wail that turned the air sharp and electric. Red sigils flashed along the walls, pulsing in frantic waves that made Seren’s skin crawl with answering heat.

Kaien dragged her forward. “Seren, stay with me!”

“I’m trying”

But the fire inside her was a storm, a rising tide threatening to burst free.

Liora sprinted beside them, glancing back every few steps. “They’re close. I hear at least six sets of boots!”

Seren didn’t need enhanced senses to feel it. The Covenant’s presence pressed against her awareness like iron bars scraping across nerves. Their collective flame warped, hungry was unmistakable.

They reached a maintenance hatch leading to the lower conduits. Kaien slashed the lock with a precise flick of his blade, sparks scattering.

“Down,” he ordered.

Liora slid in first, disappearing into shadow. Kaien motioned for Seren.

She hesitated, grabbed by a sudden violent tremor beneath her feet. Stone cracked. Lights flickered out.

Then

A wave of molten heat rolled through the tunnels, blowing Seren’s hair back.

Kaien’s eyes widened. “The Heartforge reactor something destabilized it.”

Seren swallowed. That was me. Her accidental connection to the trapped entity had spilled power into the Sanctum’s veins, disrupting its balance.

No time to confess.

She jumped into the hatch.

Metal rungs rushed past as she slid down into choking darkness. She landed beside Liora on a narrow walkway suspended above endless machinery. Kaien dropped after them, sealing the hatch.

The walkway groaned, shuddering under its own weight.

“Where are we?” Seren whispered.

“Sub-reactor venting level,” Kaien replied. “No acolytes patrol here. Too unstable.”

“Great,” Liora said. “We traded zealots for exploding pipes. Upgrades.”

Seren tried to focus. The conduits glowed with a low red hum, like veins carrying the Sanctum’s lifeblood deeper into the earth.

Rowan was somewhere above. Her muscles tightened at the thought.

Hold on, Rowan. I’m coming.

Kaien pressed his hand to the metal rail, eyes narrowing. “We need to reach the ventilation lifts. They’ll take us to the upper forge.”

“And then?” Liora asked.

He looked at Seren. “And then we improvise.”

Seren nodded once. She could live with that.

They ran.

The walkway rattled as the alarms intensified, echoing through the cavernous machinery beneath them. Vents hissed steam. Sparks arced overhead like angry lightning.

Then

A metallic screech erupted ahead.

Three robed figures dropped from an upper ledge, landing with unnatural grace. Their hoods fell back, revealing faces marked with molten cracks, eyes burning faintly red.

Pyre Acolytes warlocks altered by consuming ley contamination.

Kaien drew his blade, stance shifting to one of lethal calm. “Keep moving. I’ll take them.”

“No,” Seren said, stepping forward. “I will.”

Kaien turned sharply. “Seren”

But the fire had already risen.

Golden veins flared under her skin. The acolytes sensed it and spread into an attack formation, hands igniting with seething flame.

One hissed, “The catalyst comes willingly.”

Seren’s jaw clenched. “I’m not your catalyst.”

The acolytes launched blazing chains of fire toward her.

Seren inhaled

Heat flooded her chest

And she exhaled a blast of golden flame.

The chains vaporized.

Her fire struck the acolytes full force. Two were incinerated instantly, leaving only ash. The third staggered back, robes burning, eyes wide in terrified reverence.

“You…” he rasped. “You are the Wyrm reborn…”

Before he could finish, Kaien’s blade swept cleanly through him.

The body hit the floor.

Silence hung heavy.

Liora blinked. “Well. Remind me never to annoy you.”

Seren’s heart hammered. Her hands still burned with residual light. She felt both impossibly strong and frighteningly unstable.

Kaien stepped closer, gripping her wrist. “Seren. Look at me.”

She met his eyes.

The obsidian cracks in them reflected her golden glow two forces clashing in mirrored depths.

“You controlled it,” he said quietly. “Better than before.”

Seren shook her head. “I lost control. If that had gone wrong”

“But it didn’t.” His voice was firm. “You’re learning.”

Her breath steadied. Just a little.

Liora tapped Kaien’s shoulder. “Touching moment later. Angry cultists now.”

Footsteps thundered behind them more acolytes approaching.

Kaien cursed under his breath. “The walkway splits ahead. If we can reach the lift”

A violent tremor ripped through the Sanctum, cutting him off. The metal walkway buckled. A support beam snapped with a deafening clang.

“Move!” Kaien shouted.

They sprinted as the walkway tilted dangerously.

Ahead, the path forked left toward a dead end of swirling vents, right toward the ventilation lift.

But the right path collapsed first.

The entire section fell away in a roar of steel and flame.

Liora skidded to a stop. “Well. That’s gone.”

“We jump,” Seren said.

Kaien stared at her. “That gap is ten meters.”

“I’ll make it.”

“Seren these are industrial vents!” Liora snapped. “There’s boiling air shooting through them!”

Seren stepped back, took a breath, and felt heat coalesce in her legs.

“I can do it.”

Kaien grabbed her arm. “Seren. If you misjudge, you fall straight into the sub-reactor. Flames hotter than dragon breath. Not even you survive that.”

Seren looked at him, then at the swirling pit of molten red below.

Her brother’s face flashed again.

“I don’t have a choice.”

Kaien’s jaw tightened.

Liora sighed. “Fine. If she dies, I’m haunting her ghost.”

Seren smirked, stepped back three paces and ran.

Heat surged around her legs, coiling like fire-laced tendons. She leapt.

For one heartbeat, she flew over the swirling abyss.

Then she landed hard on the remaining catwalk, knees nearly buckling but holding.

She turned. “Come on!”

Liora backed up. “I hate this. I really hate this.”

She ran and made the jump, barely catching the railing.

Kaien went last.

He didn’t run.

He simply stepped off the ledge.

Seren’s breath froze

Until his rune-branded arm glowed, and his fall slowed unnaturally, as if invisible chains pulled him forward. He landed with soft precision.

Liora gaped. “Are you kidding me? You had magic the whole time?”

Kaien shrugged. “Cursed. Not magic.”

“I don’t care, I”

Her rant cut off as the lift doors ahead began to close.

Kaien sprinted. “Go!”

Seren grabbed Liora’s wrist, dragging her forward. The three of them slid through the tightening doorway an instant before it slammed shut.

Inside, the lift rattled, humming with ancient machinery. Kaien slammed his fist into the control rune.

The lift shot upward.

Seren pressed a hand to the glass wall. The Iron Sanctum blurred past them pipes, furnaces, catwalks until they broke into a higher chamber lit with volcanic light.

Kaien exhaled. “Upper forge. We’re close.”

Liora leaned on her crossbow. “How close?”

Seren turned toward the distant, towering shadow at the chamber’s center.

The obsidian pillar.

Rowan inside it.

Glowing. Waiting. Fading.

Seren’s veins pulsed with fire.

“Close enough,” she whispered. “Hold on, Rowan. I’m coming.”

Above them, as if answering her vow, the Sanctum roared like a dragon awakening.
