Chapter 6: The Veins Below

The tunnels beneath Aurevia breathed like a sleeping beast.

Seren felt it first as a low vibration under her boots subtle at the edges, then deepening until it thudded like a slow, subterranean heartbeat. Every few steps, the stone walls shivered with faint threads of ember-light, pulsing in time with the rhythm. Vein energy, Nyros had called it. The lifeblood of the city. The very thing the Ember Covenant sought to twist.

Kaien walked ahead of her, moving with silent precision, the silver streaks in his hair catching the faint glow. He kept one hand on the wall as if listening to its warnings. Liora followed behind, crossbow cradled, her golden eyes sharp and alert.

Seren exhaled slowly. Her breath came out warmer than air.

“The Heartforge reactor feeds off these tunnels,” Kaien murmured, pausing at a fork. “If Arkan is accelerating the Eclipse Rite, the currents will grow unstable.”

Seren frowned. “Unstable how?”

Liora grimaced. “Earthquakes. Ley ruptures. Maybe firestorms. The usual disaster cocktail.”

Kaien shot her a look. “Be serious.”

“I am,” she said, then added with a shrug, “mostly.”

Seren tried to smile, but the weight in her chest wouldn’t let her. Rowan’s face still, pale, trapped burned behind her eyelids each time she blinked. She pushed the image aside. She couldn’t break now.

Kaien pointed left. “The Iron Sanctum lies this way. But from here on, the Covenant has sensors woven into the stone. Keep your flames down.”

“I can’t always control it,” Seren said.

“You’ll have to,” he replied softly, not unkindly. “Or they’ll feel us coming long before we reach them.”

She nodded. She could do this. She had to.

They moved deeper.

The air grew hotter, the walls darker, carved with old sigils that hummed faintly when Seren passed. Her veins tingled in response, warm gold flickering under her skin. She clenched her fists, willing the fire to quiet.

The last thing they needed was a flare.

Sparks crackled somewhere far ahead metal striking metal, rhythmic and unbroken. The tunnels widened into a vaulted passageway, lit by industrial lamps and runes. Down below, a cavern spread out like a hollowed heart.

Liora whistled under her breath. “Well. They’ve been busy.”

Seren stepped to the ledge.

The Iron Sanctum was massive an underground forge-city built into the bones of Aurevia. Catwalks crisscrossed above vats of molten metal. Machinery hissed steam and fire. Dozens of robed Covenant acolytes moved with mechanical discipline between stations, their robes marked with the Ember sigil.

But the structure in the center froze Seren’s blood.

A pillar of obsidian rose from the cave floor like a spear driven upward. Chains of heated iron wrapped around it, glowing with molten runes. And inside its translucent core…

Seren’s throat tightened.

Rowan.

Suspended in a crystal of hardened ley, eyes closed, skin white as marble, golden veins pulsing faintly through his arms and neck.

“Rowan,” she whispered.

Kaien grabbed her wrist before she could step forward. “Don’t. They’ll see you.”

Her breath shook. “He’s right there.”

“And there are fifty acolytes between us and him,” Liora whispered back. “Plus the overseers. Plus whatever horrors Arkan built into that pillar.”

Seren forced herself to step back, though her body wanted nothing more than to dive headfirst into the sanctum and tear it apart until her brother was in her arms.

“We stick to the plan,” Kaien said. “We get eyes on their defenses. Learn how many overseers are here. And we find the access sigils for that pillar.”

Seren exhaled. “Right.”

But her gaze kept drifting back to Rowan.

She tried to center herself the way Nyros had taught her.

Heat is a river. You are the channel. Guide it, do not drown in it.

It helped. Barely.

They slipped through a narrow maintenance path carved into the stone. The catwalks above hid their shadows as acolytes passed below.

Kaien moved like smoke silent and sure. Liora’s steps were light, quick, precise. Seren did her best to mimic them, though every time she passed a glowing rune, her fire thrummed in recognition.

Nyros would have scolded her for her lack of discipline.

Arkan would have smiled like a proud father.

Seren shivered.

They reached the upper balcony overlooking the Sanctum’s central forge. Kaien crouched and peered between the metal beams.

“There,” he whispered.

Seren followed his gaze.

On a platform overlooking the crystal pillar stood three figures in armor dark as coal. Their robes were streaked with molten gold sigils. Overseers. Powerful ones.

Kaien’s voice was grim. “Those are the Pyre Sentinels. Arkan’s elite. Even I wouldn’t take one head-on.”

“That’s comforting,” Liora muttered.

Seren studied them closely. Something about the runes on their armor made her skin itch as if the armor itself was infused with ley-twisted souls.

Then another figure approached the platform.

Tall. Cloaked in crimson. His presence made the air ripple.

Arkan.

“Damn,” Kaien breathed. “He’s not supposed to be here.”

Seren’s pulse slammed against her ribs.

Arkan stood before the crystal pillar, raising his hand. His voice echoed across the cavern, amplified by magic and metal.

“The Eclipse Rite accelerates,” he announced. “Prepare the Heartforge. The dragonfire stirs.”

Seren’s nails bit into her palms.

“Rowan…” she whispered.

Arkan continued, turning to the Sentinels. “The girl has awakened. The Vein-Sage has trained her. And she is coming here. We will not let her reach the core.”

His head lifted slightly, as if sensing something. For a split second, Seren swore his eyes flicked toward the balcony.

She froze.

Did he feel her?

Kaien tensed. “We need to move. Now.”

They backed away into the shadows. Seren kept glancing over her shoulder, half expecting Arkan to rip through the stone and drag her out.

“Where now?” Liora whispered.

Kaien pointed down toward a darker sublevel. “The Heartgrid archives. If we can access their schematics, we’ll know how to break the pillar.”

They descended a spiral corridor carved into the rock, passing under pipes that hissed with molten energy. The deeper they went, the louder her veins hummed.

Seren winced. “Kaien… the fire it’s reacting to something.”

“The Sanctum is built on a ley junction,” Kaien said. “Your dragonblood is sensing it.”

The corridor opened into a chamber filled with suspended screens of arcane light. Runes drifted in the air like glowing ash. What looked like an ancient server combined with a magical archive stretched the length of the room.

Liora whistled. “This is new. And terrifying.”

Kaien moved toward one terminal, running his fingers across the sigils. “I’ll extract the access codes.”

Seren wandered toward a dim section of the chamber, drawn by an invisible pull. A faint whisper grazed her mind.

A voice like embers.

Child of flame…

She inhaled sharply. “Who?”

Her veins flared gold.

A shadow rippled in the corner. Something old and fiery stirred behind the glass of a sealed vessel like a fragment of a dragon’s soul trapped in liquid light.

The entity pulsed.

You come seeking the core. But you are not ready.

Seren stepped closer, unable to stop herself. “What are you?”

Kaien’s voice cut through the haze. “Seren? Don’t touch anything!”

Too late.

Her hand brushed the glass.

A surge of heat exploded through her body, blazing through her arms, her chest, her throat. Images flashed behind her eyes scales of molten gold, chains of fire, skies burning in memory.

She gasped, staggering back.

Kaien grabbed her shoulders. “Seren! Breathe!”

Liora pointed frantically at a screen. “Uh guys? That flare set off something.”

On the display, sigils flickered red.

INTRUSION ALERT.

LEVEL THREE BREACH DETECTED.

Kaien cursed. “They know we’re here.”

Bootsteps thundered in the tunnels above.

Liora loaded her crossbow. “And they’re coming fast.”

Kaien pulled Seren toward the exit. “We have to run!”

Seren tried to steady her heartbeat, but the dragonfire was boiling under her skin, roaring like a creature freed from its cage.

The entity’s final whisper echoed through her spine:

The forge will break you.

Or you will break the world.

Seren clenched her fists.

“Let them come.”

The flames in her veins blazed alive.

And the Iron Sanctum trembled.
