Night Shifts Pt. 1

Night Shifts Pt. 1
“Maybe we should take shifts. Like in groups. Just so y’know Vivian can't get us,” Tracy had a rather brilliant idea. I would help them sleep better after what happened the night before.

“We could do the usual groups,” Courtney suggested. She knew that Alex was more comfortable with Sam but Tracy had also sort of connected with him. Although Tracy and Alex gave her brother-sister vibes.

“Okay Alex and I can take the first watch. I'm not really tired. I was cooped up all day so yeah. Well wake you guys up at 1:00” Sam rubbed the back of his neck. Alex was about to protest but the others had already collapsed into their ‘sleeping bags’ on the floor.

Alex sighed leaning back in his chair. He was glad he'd manage to find everyone but something told him this wasn't the end of Vivian's psychotic schemes. He looked over at Sam who had been staring at him for the past few minutes. They hadn't talked much though none of them had really in the past few days. They'd all been focused on finishing the investigation and getting out of there safely.

“Are you doing okay?” Sam tilted his head focused on Alex who had taken to pacing the second the others went to sleep.

“Yeah… It's just… I don't think she's going to let all of us go,” Alex admitted. He didn't just think it, he knew deep down someone wouldn't make it out. Vivian had changed drastically. When they all got here he was actually able to tell that she wasn't a completely evil spirit. It was just a feeling he'd had deep down. Now whenever she even got within ten feet of him he felt this overwhelming dark energy that made him want to take off running. It was just something he didn't know how to explain.

“Oh?” Sam didn't exactly know how to answer it. He wasn't even sure he understood what Alex meant.

Alex sighed. He'd moved further away from the others but he'd stopped pacing. If Vivian didn't intend to set all of them free then who would remain there? He had a theory of why she'd wanted to keep one of them here. She'd let someone go in a moment of weakness. Now she was trying to make up for a past mistake. It just didn't seem fair. None of them wanted to be there and no one deserved to be here in his opinion.

“I'm sorry it took so long to find you,” Alex genuinely felt bad that he'd been left down there by himself all day. It was cold in the basement and he just hoped Sam wouldn't get sick.

“You had a lot on your plate. I wasn't the only one under threat of being stuck here after all. Besides, you did good. You got the others to work together. And it's not like you walked by me like Luke and Tracy did,” Sam came and sat next to Alex.

“She wanted to make you one of her trophies,” Alex scrunched his face up in disgust. He hated the basement. He also felt bad for the families of those poor kids. Did they ever get the closure they deserved?

“Yeah that's never going to happen,” Sam would have laughed if it weren't for the serious look on Alex's face.

“Never say never,” his tone was flat as he stared off down the hall leaning back on his hands.
