Chapter 38

Chapter 38

I seemed to have had a long, drawn-out dream.

A dream I didn't want to wake up from.

In my dream, Levi's face was gentle, not so cold.

In my dream, Levi's words were warm, every sentence tender.

I had never slept so peacefully and well.

The next day, I woke up naturally.

I rubbed my sleepy eyes and reached for my phone on the nightstand. Nine o'clock.

"Breakfast is ready, go have something to eat."

Levi was standing at the door, which startled me.

I thought he'd already left for work. The house was as quiet as usual, but unexpectedly, he hadn't left yet today.

"Okay."

I felt something was off.

Listening to his footsteps fade away, I got out of bed to get ready for work.

My head hurt a bit. Remembering I'd gotten drunk yesterday, suddenly Levi's face appeared in my fuzzy memory, but I didn't want to believe he actually knew about my secret hideaway.

"It must have been a hallucination."

I comforted myself—everything was just a hallucination. Levi couldn't possibly know about my secret place, and even if he did, he wouldn't care about me anyway.

But thinking of it as just a dream felt a bit strange.

Without a better explanation, a dream was the best explanation.

After washing up, I went downstairs.

Indigo called me over for breakfast as soon as she saw me.

"Mrs. Morgan, I made soup this morning. You had too much to drink yesterday and kept sleeping from the afternoon all the way until today."

I'd actually slept that long.

"I'm not hungry."

I just felt empty inside, but I didn't want to eat anything.

Indigo shook her head helplessly. "You should still eat something. Mr. Morgan said it's not good for your stomach, so he specifically asked me to make this."

Levi arranged this?

"You don't know—yesterday Mr. Morgan was so worried about you. You kept throwing up, and Mr. Morgan personally cleaned you up."

"No way?"

I could hardly believe it. This was too incredible—Levi taking such careful care of me...

Indigo smiled. "Why wouldn't it be true? I've said it before, Mr. Morgan does care about you. Yesterday, he even had me buy glucose for you."

I'd been thinking I just got drunk and had a dream, that everything was just a dream.

Did that mean all those things I said to Levi actually happened?

I...

I'd been planning to divorce him, and then I said all those things from my heart. Wasn't that contradictory? Would Levi think I was ridiculous?

"Indigo, did I say anything inappropriate?"

I was terrified. If I'd shown weakness to Levi or confessed my feelings or something, that would be so embarrassing...

"Mr. Morgan carried you back to your room, so I didn't hear what you said. But Mr. Morgan kept responding to you gently."

My head instantly started buzzing. What on earth did I say to Levi? Good thing I didn't make eye contact with him earlier.

And he carried me—we've rarely had any intimate gestures since we got married.

"Blair, maybe you really embarrassed yourself yesterday..."

Indigo urged, "Mrs. Morgan, you should eat breakfast first. Don't waste Mr. Morgan's thoughtfulness."

Now, just hearing Levi's name gave me a headache. Forget eating—I wanted to crawl into a hole right now.

I'd finally managed to act somewhat tough around him, and now it felt like I was right back where I started.

"I'm heading out. You can have the breakfast, don't waste it."

"Mrs. Morgan, how could I? I..."

"It's fine."

I waved behind me as I walked away. Right now, I just wanted to get to the office and keep busy, to forget about all those embarrassing things.

Just as I reached the door and was about to open the car door, Levi's driver called out to me.

"Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Morgan said to have you ride in his car."

Levi hadn't left yet?

Was he deliberately waiting for me?

My hands trembled slightly as I pulled them back.

The driver opened the car door for me, and Levi's figure came into view.

"You guys go ahead, it's not on the way."

I immediately made up an excuse. I couldn't possibly stay calm being alone with him right now.

Levi patted the seat next to him, gesturing for me to sit. "We'll drop you off first."

He actually offered to drive me to work—what kind of unprecedented event was this? I could hardly believe it. In six years, I'd never had this treatment even at the Morgan Group.

"No need, the company is so busy, and there's a meeting today. It wouldn't be good to be late."

I found another precise excuse. The Morgan Group had a regular meeting today, and he was about to be late.

"It's fine."

Was Levi determined to drive me?

I stood there frozen, not knowing what to do.

"I have hands and feet of my own, and it's really not on the way. I'll drive myself. You guys go ahead." I kept my head down, not daring to look into his eyes.

"Suit yourself."

Levi closed the car door. The driver looked at me awkwardly, nodded, then turned and got in the car.

Watching them drive away, I felt lost and disappointed.

This was the first time Levi had been so good to me. He'd waited for me so patiently, but I couldn't accept this sudden kindness—I actually felt I didn't deserve it.

Levi had always been cold to me. His unusual behavior today surprised me, so I could only wrap myself up and not get close to him.

After getting back to the office, Nola discussed the company's plans for next quarter with me. To apologize for my frequent tardiness and early departures, I treated her to desserts from a new place near the office.

She complained while eating her cake.

"Let me tell you, my dad's been getting more and more ridiculous lately. He said if I don't go on blind dates, he'll lock me at home and not let me go to work."

I was speechless. "What century is this? Mr. Skye should be open-minded. Why is he so hung up on your marriage? Doesn't he want you to find someone you truly like?"

Nola pouted. "Blair, I'm so conflicted right now. You talk about finding someone you like—you liked Levi so much, and look how that turned out."

She was just being honest, but suddenly realized this might hurt me and covered her mouth.

I smiled at her. "You're right. You should really find someone where the feelings are mutual."

"Actually, just talking about Levi as a person, he really is exceptional. Any woman would be attracted to him. You're right—it has to be mutual."

Nola held my hand. "Blair, I've always felt he's not completely without feelings for you. It's not easy for ordinary people to maintain a marriage for six years. You've been together six years—if he had no feelings, could he have lasted this long?"

"That's because Jessa hasn't come back."

I was exhausted. "Recently, his attitude toward me seems to have changed, but I really can't stand him loving another woman."

"Have you asked him?"

"I have. He won't answer directly. I even told him if he loves Jessa, I'll divorce him anytime."

Nola felt sorry for me. "Levi isn't a difficult person. Maybe you could try asking him more directly. If he doesn't answer, keep pressing."

"Then he'll definitely find me annoying."

"That's exactly the problem between you two. Why do married couples need boundaries?"

These words hit me hard, but how could I take another step toward Levi?

Marrying him had already used up all my courage.
