It was Monday morning, and I had to go to school. Why do we get two days of break and five days of torture? At least school helped me escape from my mom’s scrutinizing eyes.
I stood at the bus stop, waiting for the bus to arrive. I looked at the time and knew the school bus was going to be late again. My dad was too busy preparing for his marriage to some lady, so he couldn’t take me to school, and my mom was the last person I wanted to ride with.
As the school bus arrived and took me to school, I got to class just before the bell rang. At least I was on time today.
I sat in the back of the class, staring blankly at the teacher as she droned on about decimals. I couldn’t concentrate. My mind was elsewhere, worrying about the upcoming wedding.
At break time, my peers started gossiping about the grand wedding in town. I tried to tune them out, but it was hard to ignore.
“Hey, Avery, I heard your handsome dad is marrying that rich chick, so from now on, you’ll be coming to school in one of those sports cars instead of the bus,” one of them said, smirking.
I felt a surge of hate and anger. “Shut the fuck up before I make you shut up,” I snapped at the stupid girls who were getting
on my nerves.
But they just kept going on, maybe because my life was a soap opera to them. “Yeah, you are going to be left out. Your dad won’t have time for you anymore. You were weird before, but now you’ll be both weird and the neglected black sheep of the family,” another girl remarked while touching up her botched face.
That was it! I had had enough. I stood up, clenched my fists, and got into a fight with them. Two against one—I knew they would beat the crap out of me, but I wasn’t going down without ruining their faces.
People gathered around us, and the next thing I knew, I heard the principal shouting for us to be separated. He dragged us to his office.
Oh no, this is my third time this week. I can’t afford to be here; I have risked being suspended. Shit.
“Avery Reeds, this is the third time this week you have gotten into a fight with your peers, and I warned you the last time that there would be consequences if you got into another fight,” the principal said sternly. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to call your parents. You are suspended.”
I sighed, feeling sad. I knew I was in big trouble. The only bright side to this was that my dad would finally give me attention, even if it wasn’t the attention I desired.
The principal handed me the phone, and I dialed my dad’s number. He answered on the first ring and put it on speakerphone, as he had hearing issues
“Who is this?” my dad asked.
“It’s me, Avery.”
“Hello, sweetheart, what’s going on? Why are you calling me at this time? Aren’t you supposed to be in school?” he asked.
I took a deep breath, trying to explain. “Don’t shout… but I got into a fight at school. The principal wants you to come pick
me up. Please come.”

Dad sighed. “Avery… Okay, I’ll be right there. Wait for me at the principal’s office. I want to hear from him about what happened.”
Twenty minutes later, Dad walked into the principal’s office, looking calm and collected. The principal explained the whole situation and told my dad that I’d be suspended for two weeks. My dad understood and walked me out.
“Avery, I love you, but you know you shouldn’t have retaliated,” he said, putting a hand on my shoulder.
“What should I have done, Dad? Watch them badmouth you?” I asked, feeling irritated.
“No, sweetheart, you should have reported to a teacher or something, but we don’t fight. That is not good behavior… Did you at least hit them well?” my dad asked, trying to lighten up the dull mood.
“You know I did,” I answered while recollecting how I left their faces messed up.
We walked out of the school toward the car. At least the fight had gotten me out of school. I should have been happy, but I was scared, and I didn’t know how to process my emotions. I needed to talk to someone.
“Dad, can I ask you something?” I asked as we drove away from the school.
“Of course, sweetheart. What is bothering you?”
I took a deep breath. “I’m scared. I’m scared that you’re going to marry her and forget about me, that you’ll make me the other family, and I won’t be as important to you anymore.”
Alex’s expression softened, and he reached out to hug me, then pecked my forehead.
“Avery, sweetheart, I pinky promise you, that is never going to happen. I love you, no matter what. And Bella loves you too. She is excited to meet you and for you to meet your brother.”
I looked up at him, surprised. “Really?”
Dad nodded. “Yes, really. In fact, I have something for you.”
He pulled out a wedding invitation from his pocket and handed it to me.
“This is the wedding invitation. Bella wanted me to give it to you personally. She wanted to give it to you herself, but I told her that I’d have to talk to you first, and since you brought this up, I had to show it to you now. She’s more than happy to meet you and join our family.”
“Thank you Dad, for this and the assurance” I said, looking up at him.
He smiled and put his arm around me. “Always sweetheart, I’m always here for you.”
“I love you Dad”
