I stood in the middle of my dining room, staring at the decorations I had arranged. The long table was set with expensive silverware, and white linen napkins were folded neatly beside each plate. The centerpiece was covered with red roses, and the candles made the setting even more romantic.
I wasn’t sure why I had gone through all this effort. I wasn’t the romantic type, and yet here I was, making sure everything was perfect.
Julie was coming over, and I wanted to make what we had official—which, for some reason, made me nervous.
I adjusted the wine glasses again, even though they were perfectly fine, and checked my watch. She should be here any minute now. My hands were shaking, which annoyed me because I was never one to be nervous-not in business, not in relationships. But with Julie… things were different.
She was finally here. I watched as she walked toward my house, wearing a simple yet gorgeous yellow dress. Her hair was pinned up, with a few loose strands falling around her face. As she stepped inside, she took one look at me.
Well, well,” she said, stepping further in. “Did I walk into the wrong house? Who are you, and what have you done with this house and its owner?”
chuckled, closing the door behind her. “Funny.”
She looked around, clearly impressed. “Flowers, candles, wine… this is suspicious. What’s the occasion?”
You are the occasion,” I said.
ulie walked over to the table, running her fingers over the rose petals. “Did you do all this, or did you hire someone?”
I did it myself.”
Your hands are shaking,” she said, pointing at my hand. “Don’t tell me you’re nervous?”
And who wouldn’t be nervous, standing with a goddess like you? I am definitely nervous.”
We sat down, and I poured her a glass of red wine.
‘Damien, how do you know I love red wine?”
‘I have my sources,” I answered, feeling extremely grateful for her secretary, who had told me everything I needed to know.
“So, what’s your favorite movie? Mine is Legally Blonde,” Julie asked while putting a piece of chicken in her mouth. “Legally Blonde? I didn’t take you as the rom-com girl,” I paused to see her reaction, and when she just smiled, I continued, “My favorite movie at the moment is Oppenheimer. Have you seen it?”
“Funny enough, I have. I saw the trailer, and that propelled me to watch the movie,” she replied.
We chatted about everything and anything, and it was amazing.
I loved spending time with her. Everything flowed effortlessly, and I found myself laughing and smiling more than I had in
weeks.
As we finished our main course, I decided to drop the bombshell. “Julie… I need to tell you something.”

Her smile faded slightly. “That sounds serious.”
“It is.” I hesitated, then said, “The investor I’m partnering with for my business deal… is Cassandra.”
Julie blinked. “Cassandra.”
She said the name slowly, as if testing how it felt in her mouth.
I waited for her reaction, but her face was unreadable.
“Are you okay with that?” I asked.
She lifted her glass, took a slow sip, then set it down. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
I narrowed my eyes. “Julie.”
She sighed. “Okay, fine. It’s… unexpected.”
“Unexpected?”
She let out a humorless laugh. “You were in love with her once, Damien.”

I shook my head. “Yes, I was once in love with her, but I am not in love with Cassandra. I’m done with her and her games. I don’t even want to be in the same room with her.”
Julie looked at me, maintaining eye contact, and I could see the question in her mind. “It’s business, so why are you telling ne? You don’t need my permission or something.”
I took Julie’s hand. “I’m telling you because, Julie, I don’t want to hide anything from you. I want you to know what goes on in every area of my life. And I want to tell you that I love you-I deeply love you.”
Julie’s expression turned surprised, and she looked away, trying to process her emotions. She acted sheepishly again, something I noticed she does when she’s conflicted or shy.
I paused, taking a deep breath. “So, Julie, I’m asking you for permission to make this relationship official-”
Stop, Damien. I don’t want you to finish what you’re about to say,” she interrupted immediately.
‘But why? I thought you felt the same way,” I replied, feeling hurt and confused.
I do, but I cannot be in a relationship with you,” she replied with sad eyes.
“Wait, Julie, did you lead me on? What are we doing here? What are you doing here if you don’t want to take this further?” 1 asked, getting annoyed.
“I-I don’t know,” she stammered. “I like you, but I’m scared… okay? I don’t need this.” She stood up, grabbed her purse, and headed for the door.
“Wait!” I got up to hold her,
“You said you like me, say that again,” I said with a smile. She tried to remove her hand from my grip, but I held her from behind, feeling her warm body while inhaling her lavender perfume.
“I’m only asking for you to define this. I know you feel how I feel, and I won’t hurt you like your ex did. I like you, Julie… I haven’t felt this way for anyone, not even Cassandra. You make me feel alive. We share the same interests… Please give us a chance, please,” I spoke softly while gently turning her to face me.

We drew closer and exchanged a light kiss. I smiled while kissing her, and it ended as quickly as it began.
“Okay,” she answered with a soft whisper, feeling flustered by the kiss. I could see a light blush creeping up her cheeks from
her neck as I led her back to her seat.
“Julic, I promise to always be honest with you, to always respect you, care for you, and to always make you feel loved and cherished. Please, will you do me the honor of making me a very happy man by being my girlfriend?”
Julie looked at me, her eyes searching mine. After what felt like an eternity, she nodded and smiled.
“Okay, Damien. Let’s do this. Let’s make this relationship official. I’ll be your girlfriend.”
