Damien POV

I took a deep breath as I stood in front of the conference room, I really did not want to have this board meeting right now, because I knew we would just go back and forward, arguing about how the companys stocks were declining and if liquidating the company was a better option before it goes bankrupt.

As I entered the conference room, the board members were already sitted and the projector was already displaying the reduce stocked proceedings.

The board members stared at me, they looked angry.

“Late again once again and who wouldn’t be with the rate the stocks numbers are dropping.”

One of them said.

“I understand your concerns,” I said. “But I can assure you, that this is only temporary. Once the deal with the investor is finalized, our numbers will bounce back, and the company will regain its footing.” I said with sweaty palms, I wasn’t even convinced by my own words and the declining stock numbers displayed on the screen behind me didn’t make my job any

easier.

One of the older board members, Mr. Blackhead, adjusted his glasses and gave me a sharp look. “Damien, we’ve been hearing this for weeks. How can we be certain that this investor will even want to invest at this rate? The stocks numbers are dropping everyday, and frankly, so are some of us in this room. How sure are you about this investment?.”

I took in a deep breath. “The investor has expressed serious interest. We’ve been in talks, and I expect to close the deal soon. This project has the potential to turn things around, but I need your patience and trust.”

Another member, Mrs. Hargrove, leaned forward. “Patience isn’t forever, we have been patient for quite some time and right now we need results, not promises.”

Before I could respond, my secretary quietly entered the room and leaned down to whisper in my ear, “The investor is on the line, sir. He wants to speak with you now.”

“Excuse me,” I said, straightening up. “I need to take this call, and we will schedule another meeting for this,” I added.

Without waiting for a response, I walked out of the room, grateful that the meeting had finally ended. However, my heart wouldn’t stop racing-this call could change everything.

I picked up the phone and answered with as much composure as I could muster. “This is

Damien.”

“Mr. Damien,” the investor said, “first of all, we would like to apologize for the delay in finalizing our discussions. My team and I have been reviewing the terms, and we’re thrilled to announce that we would like to partner with your company.”

Finally, I muttered, “Thank you so much, Mr. Smith, for this great opportunity.”

“However,” he continued, “for this project to proceed, there’s one condition. You will need to work alongside a trusted partner of mine, who will also be involved in helping you carry out the project.”

I paused. “That won’t be a problem. More hands on the project will definitely be helpful,” I

said.

“I’m glad you’re okay with that,” the investor replied. “You’ll meet her later this month. She is currently occupied with other projects, but once she’s free, I’ll have her contact you directly or even set up a meeting for the two of you.”

“Understood,” I said. “Thank you for trusting me with this.”

“Don’t let me down, Mr. Damien, because this is quite a huge investment,” he said.

“I won’t sir” I said before he ended the call.

As soon as the line went dead, I did a happy dance. This was the breakthrough I needed. Without much thought, I pulled out my phone and dialed Julie.

She answered on the second ring. “You finally decided to call me after everything? What’s the special occasion?” she asked.

“I just closed the deal,” I screamed.

“Congratulations,” she said.

“Don’t tell me I’m the first person you called, or I’ll take it that you have no one else to share the good news with, so you’re calling me?”

I chuckled. “Maybe. Or maybe not. Besides, I just wanted to hear your voice.”

“Flattery will get you nowhere,” she said, though I could hear her laugh. “So, what’s the plan now? Are you finally going to focus on something other than work?”.

“I would love to, if that something involves you,” I admitted, running a hand through my

hair.

Julie laughed softly. “Let me guess, you’ll be glued to your phone once again?”

“Never again,” I said. “I promise to make it up to you.”

“Oh? And how do you plan to do that?”

“I’ll take you on another date,” I said confidently. “This time, no phones. You won’t even see me with mine. Just you, me, and after dinner, you’ll be at my place.”

“You better stick to your word, Damien,” she warned. “Because the last one didn’t exactly end on a good note.”

“I promise,” I said, grinning. “I’ll even let you pick the place.”

“Now that is a dangerous offer,” she said playfully.

“I’ll take my chances,” I replied.

“At the Italian restaurant then. At least that’s a good place to celebrate this good news. I’m really happy for you,” she said.

“Thanks, Julie,” I said. “And sorry about last time.”

“You better be, after leaving me all alone,” she teased.

“Now, go back to saving your company. I’ll hold you to that date.”

“Deal,” I said. “Talk soon.”

“Bye, Damien,” she said before hanging up.

I stared at the phone for a moment. I didn’t want to end the call with just “bye”; maybe “I love you” would be better.

“Damn, I was expecting too much,” I thought to myself. I wanted to make this relationship official, to tell anyone who cared to listen that Julie was my girlfriend, but I knew that would

be asking too much of her. She was barely over her divorce,
