I stared at Damien as he scrolled through his phone, barely touching his meal. It was the third time tonight he had picked up his phone, and I was tired of pretending it didn’t bother
“Damien,” I said, putting down my fork. “Are you sure you’re on a date with me, or with phone? Because it looks as if you’d rather spend time with your phone than with me.”
He looked up, startled, as if he had forgotten I was sitting with him. “I’m sorry,” he said, pressing his phone. “It’s work,” he mumbled.
I crossed my arms. Was he really serious right now? Work?
“In case you forgot, I also have work to do. I have a fashion show. I’m working, but you see me using my phone,” I said.

“You know what? If you’re so busy, you can go, because I clearly do not want to be another man’s second priority again. I tried that with Alex, and look where it landed me. He cheated on me,” I said angrily.
“Busy with work, that’s what you all start with.”
Damien sighed and put his phone down as he ran a hand through his hair.
“Julie, it’s not like that. My company is facing some serious issues. I need to focus on finding a solution. It’s bigger than you can imagine.”
“What kind of issues?” I asked, a little embarrassed that I had overreacted.
He hesitated, then leaned forward.
“My company is in the process of going bankrupt. The stocks are dropping, and the banks won’t loan me any money. I’ve been blacklisted by them, thanks to my father pulling some strings, and the only way to save this company is to secure an investment deal with Mr. Smith, who barely even replies to my messages.”
I looked at him, surprised. “Sorry, I didn’t know it was this serious. Why would your father try to blacklist you?” I asked, as this was the first time he had mentioned his family.
Damien shook his head. “It’s complicated. He’s trying to show that he’s the boss. But this investment deal will surely work out. I just sent the proposal and am trying to settle some other things. That’s why I’ve been on the phone.”
I placed my hands on his, trying to comfort him, for this was the first time I had seen him

complain about work, and I didn’t even know how to comfort him. “You could have just canceled the date and focused on what’s more important. Is there any way I can help you? I can loan you some money.”
He chuckled as he pulled his hand away. “Thanks, Julie, but this isn’t something you can help with or loan. We’re talking billions of dollars. I can handle it.”
Before I could respond, I accidentally knocked my cup of tea over, spilling it on his shirt.
“Damn it!” Damien cursed, standing up abruptly and grabbing a napkin to wipe his shirt.
“I’m so sorry!” I said, trying to help him clean up.
“It’s fine,” he said. “Maybe I should call it a night. Besides, I have other things to do.”
“Damien, wait-”
“I’ll see you later, Julie,” he said, grabbing his coat and walking out without even waiting for me to say something.
I sat there, feeling deflated. The evening had gone completely off track, and now I had made him angry. I picked up my glass of wine and sipped it slowly.
As I stared at the restaurant, there was no reason to rush back to an empty apartment. Avery was with Grandma tonight, and the thought of going to an empty home would make me feel lonelier. Besides, I had planned to spend the night at Damien’s.
I swirled the wine in my glass, then I saw June. She was chatting with someone and clearly looked uninterested. I tried to turn away before she would see me, but she saw me and waved. I gave her a small smile and gestured for her to come over.
“Julie!” she said. “I saw you when I came, but I noticed you had company.” She beamed with a smile. “So where is your date?” she asked, giggling.
“And what about you? Who is that guy you were sitting with?”
June looked back at him. “A lame blind date. What about you? Bad date?”
I sighed. “Something like that. He had to leave early.”
She looked at me and then moved closer. “Trouble in paradise already?”
I shrugged her off. “And why are you so interested in him?”
“Because I care about you. After what Alex did to you, girl, you definitely should have fun and
break some hearts too.”
I chuckled. “And how old do you think I am, 28, to go around date hunting? Besides, the only

She looked at me with a questioning and amused expression. “Wait a minute, Julie. I hope this is not what I’m thinking. You’re not planning to tie the knot with your fellow divorcee,
are you?”
I laughed at how ridiculous she was. “And once again, how old do you think I am? We’re not even in a relationship, and I don’t plan to get married again. The one with Alex was enough.”
“And don’t try to. You need to have all the fun in the world. Maybe try being like me—don’t get into any committed relationship so you don’t get your heart broken.”
I nodded. “Thanks, June.”
She smiled and stood up. “I need to get back to my date and also please trying coming by the office tomorrow, the designers are waiting for your approval.”
“I will,” I said, watching her walk over to her date.
I finished my wine and stood to leave. As I made my way toward the exit, I froze.
I saw Maria.
She was standing near the entrance, probably working. My first instinct was to turn and walk the other way because I wasn’t in the mood to exchange words with her.
But before I could move, she walked up to me.
“Look, I am not in the mood for any…” Before I could complete my sentence, she knelt down. I stared at her, shocked.
“What are you doing?” I asked, trying to pull her up. People were starting to stare.
Maria looked at me, her eyes teary. “Please, Julie. I’m sorry,” she said.
