Bella POV

I sat by the glass incubator, staring at Felis as he slept. His tiny chest rose and fell with each breath, and the soft beeping of the machines filled the quiet room. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He looked so small, so fragile, but he was fighting. My baby, my little fighter.

“He’s going to make it,” I muttered to myself.

“You will make it.” I said again.

I heard the door open. Maybe it was the doctor, probably coming to check on Felis. But as I turned to see who it was, it was Alex. He stared at me for a moment before walking up to me.

“Sweetheart, you need to get some rest,” he said.

“His name is Felis.” I ignored what he had said.

“It means life. He is going to survive this. He will survive it,” I said.

“Bella, please get some rest. I’ll watch over him,” Alex insisted.

“No, I’m not leaving him,” I replied, shaking my head as my eyes returned to Felis.

“Bella, you have been here for hours. You just gave birth. You really need to rest…”

“I said I’m not leaving!” I snapped.

“So don’t force me,” I added.

Alex sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “Can you please stop being stubborn? The baby is in good hands. The doctors and nurses are watching him. You are going to make yourself sick if you keep this up.”

I ignored him, my eyes on Felis.

“His name is Felis.” I repeated again.

“It’s perfect for him, isn’t it?” I asked

“It’s a beautiful name,” he said, his hands on my shoulder.

“But, Bella, please-just take a break. Let me take care of you for a while.”

I pushed his hand away. He was starting to get annoying. Why couldn’t he just understand that I couldn’t leave Felis’s sight?

“Take care of me.” I scoffed.

“Then what about him? You think I didn’t notice how you haven’t held him? You’ve barely been around since his birth. Do you even know how he looks!”

“Bella-”

“No! Don’t ‘Bella’ me!” I shouted, my voice breaking with tears. “I bet you don’t care if his life is hanging by a thread because you have Avery, don’t you?”

He sighed deeply, running a hand through his messy hair. “Are you really going to be like this? Hell yes, I care! I’m just as scared as you are!” he shouted.

“You think this isn’t hard for me? My son is in the ICU, surrounded by machines, fighting for his life. Do you think I’m not worried? Or do you think I’m not scared about the possibility of him not making it? But guess what-unlike you, I can’t afford to break down. I need to be strong for him and for you,” he said.

“Do you have any idea how frustrated I am? He is my son too, so yes, I care about him!”

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“I shouldn’t have lashed out at you. I just feel so helpless and useless right now,” I said as I wiped away my tears.

“I feel like the worst mom in the world.”

“Maybe this is karma,” I said. “Maybe this is what I deserve.”

“What are you talking about?”

“This,” I said, pointing at Felis.

“He is in pain all because of me… Maybe it’s because I ruined your marriage. Maybe I’m being punished for being the other woman, for being… a husband snatcher. People have called me a homewrecker, and they said that karma would take its place in due time.”

“Maybe… this is… it…” I said, breaking down in tears.

He placed his hands on my lips, then he pulled me closer and gave me a hugged.

“Bella, please don’t say that.” he said.

“We are going to get through this. This is no fault of yours,” he said.

“No, you are wrong,” I said as I tried to push him away, but he held me tighter.

“Let me go!” I cried as I hit his chest. “Just leave me alone!” I screamed.

“No,” he said. “I’m not letting you go. Bella, listen to me.”

Chapter 31

I stopped struggling and just rested my body against his as I cried on him.

“You didn’t ruin anything,” he continued. “My marriage was already over. You didn’t destroy it—you saved me from it. You saved me from a life of misery, and with or without you, the marriage would still have ended. It was just a matter of time.”

I shook my head. “Then why is Felis like this? Why does he have to fight for his life?”

He cupped my face gently, forcing me to look into his eyes. “He will be alright. Our son is a fighter. He will fight this, just like you fought for me. He will definitely get better, and when he does, we are going to get married, just like you wanted.”

“He will get better,” I muttered as I held his hand. We both stared at him until the doctor

walked in.

“Just a routine check,” she said with a kind smile as she moved to Felis’s incubator.

Alex stepped back, keeping an arm around me as we watched the doctor check Felis’s vitals.

“This is impressive,” the doctor said, glancing at us. “He is stable now, and his vitals are alright. After I check on him again in a few hours, if he is still stable, he will be moved out of the NICU, and you will be able to hold your son.”

“Thank you doctor.” Alex said.

“Thank goodness,” I muttered over and over again as I put my hand on my head. My head was pounding, and my body felt weak. I could barely see anything, and then I felt myself slowly falling to the floor.

“Bella?” Alex shouted as he caught me, and then everything went blank.
