Julie POV

With tired eyes, I put on my heels. I was really in no mood to go to work today, but I had no other choice. I hadn’t been to the office in days, and there was a lot of work to be done. I had the fashion project to deal with, and I needed to approve the sketches.

I grabbed my bag and called June.

“I want to meet with the sketchers and designers,” I said as she answered the phone.

“I’ll be in the office in less than ten minutes, so make sure all the sketchers are in the conference room before I get there,” I said and hung up without even waiting for her

response.

The drive to the office felt longer than usual. Every mile seemed to stretch endlessly. I hadn’t even started my day, yet I was already this tired.

I soon arrived at the company and parked my car in the lot.

“Let’s get this damn day over with,” I muttered to myself as I got out of the car.

“Good morning, ma’am,” the security guard greeted me.

But I ignored him and kept walking without responding. By the time I reached the conference room, I was already feeling very cranky.

The team was already gathered, their sketches spread out on the table. June stood near the projector, flipping through slides as everyone nodded in admiration.

“Is this what you call a sketch?” I snapped.

The room was silent as all eyes turned to me.

“This?” I said, pointing at one of the sketches on the table. “All of this can’t possibly be what you’ve been working on. This hideous design? Trash all of it. I want a better design on my desk before the end of the day. I don’t care how long it takes-just get it done today! Enough people toying with me!” I yelled.

A few people exchanged nervous glances. June, however, just stared at me as I ranted.

“And why the hell are you still sitting down?” I continued. “All of you, get out and start working! You don’t have all day to waste,” I yelled.

Everybody left, except for June. She stayed seated, watching me as I lashed out.

“Julie,” she said once everyone had left.

Chapter 30

“Toying around, huh? You’re really unbelievable,” she scoffed as she stood up.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I snapped.

“It means,” she said, taking a step closer, “I don’t care what’s going on in your personal life, but don’t you dare come in here and make someone else’s hard work look useless and wasted. These people have been working day and night to meet deadlines. They’ve been waiting on you-on your approval-which you delayed for about a week.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but she cut me off.

“And the time you decide to show up, you yell at everyone and talk down on their efforts. And what justification do you have to say we are toying with you? You’re the one toying with people. Try to get your act together. This isn’t the Julie I know.”

I stood there, stunned by her words. She shook her head and continued.

“A piece of advice: learn how to draw a line between work and whatever mess you’re dealing with outside of here. Because it’s not fair, Julie. Not to them, not to me, and definitely not to this company.”

With that, she turned and walked out.

I leaned back in the chair, spinning it around to face the window.

I sighed.

She was right.

I hated to admit it, but she was right.

And I was wrong. I had no right to take my frustration out on them. Before I knew it, I felt the tears. For the first time after what happened at Damien’s place, I let myself cry.

Why did it hurt so much?

I wasn’t in love with him. Was I?

I shook my head, trying to push the thought away. No, it wasn’t love. It couldn’t be. I had barely been divorced for a year, so it just couldn’t be. He had a lot of complications in his life. I couldn’t be with someone like him.

But still, the thought of him and what happened broke my heart. As I remembered every one of his jokes, his compliments, and, gosh, the sex.

“It was just one night,” I whispered to myself, wiping the tears away. “One stupid mistake.”

“Julie, get a hold of yourself. It was just sex and nothing else, so why feel betrayed?” I

muttered, trying to convince myself.

I pushed myself out of the chair and grabbed my bag. I couldn’t stay here. It was better for everyone if I left.

I walked toward the parking lot, barely making eye contact with anyone.

But as I reached the parking lot, I saw him.

Damien.

He stood by his car. His face looked different-he looked tired and worn out, like he hadn’t slept in days. His clothes looked bigger than him, and for a moment, I wondered if he had lost weight overnight.

“Julie,” he called out, his voice tired.

“Julie,” he called out, his voice tired.

I froze. It took everything in me not to turn around and look at him. I kept on moving

“Julie, wait,” he said, stepping closer.

I kept walking, holding my car keys tightly in

my

hand.

“Julie!”

I still didn’t stop walking.

“Just a few steps, Julie.” I muttered to myself, as I kept on walking.

“The baby isn’t mine,” he said, with a trembling voice.

I stopped walking, as I turned around to look at him. His voice made me stop, as it sounded as if he was crying.

“The baby isn’t mine,” he said again, louder this time. I saw tears in his eyes.

He was crying. Oh dammit he was actually crying.
