Chapter 19: Between Two Boys
The hospital smell stuck to my clothes like a bad cologne. I fidgeted on the hospital bed, feeling the uncomfortable mattress against the cold metal underneath. The room felt icy, a sharp difference from the warm sunlight pouring in through the window. The IV drip had been removed, leaving a tiny bruise as a reminder of what I had been through.
Evan sat on the edge of the bed, holding his phone up high. A sudden flash blinded me, and then he was smiling at the screen. “Posting this on Instagram,” he said, his fingers moving quickly on the screen.
Evan sat on the edge of the bed, holding his phone up high. A sudden flash blinded me, and then he was smiling at the screen. “Posting this on Instagram,” he said, his fingers moving quickly on the screen.
I blinked, trying to shake off my tiredness. “What did you say?”
Evan’s grin grew wider. “Just letting everyone know you’re my girl.”
My heart skipped a beat. “Your girl?” The words felt strange yet exciting as I said them.
Evan looked into my eyes, his amber gaze intense. “Yeah,” he whispered softly. “Will you be my girlfriend, Sloane?”
My thoughts raced. Evan was so different from Chandler, with his playful attitude and charm. But being around Evan always made me feel alive. Wasn’t it time to move on from Chandler?
“Yes,” I whispered back, almost inaudible.
Evan moved closer, his minty breath mixing with the sterile air. His lips were so close to mine, promising something new and exhilarating.
The door slammed open, shattering the delicate moment. Chandler appeared in the doorway, his gaze narrowed, his jaw tight. He had on a pair of faded black cargo shorts, with several pockets slightly bulging, and a snug, short-sleeved Henley shirt in a rich olive green. The top two buttons were unbuttoned, showing a glimpse of the silver chain resting against his chest. His feet were covered in well-worn brown leather sandals, the straps softened from many summers. Despite the relaxed outfit and the heat of the day, the tension emanating from him was unmistakable.
Evan stepped back, a smirk on his face. “Sorry,” he said, “I’m busy with my girlfriend.”
Chandler looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Girlfriend?” he repeated, his voice filled with hurt and anger.
I tugged at the hem of my sundress, feeling the turmoil inside me. My heart raced, echoing the uncertainty I felt.
A million thoughts raced through my mind, each one filled with longing, regret, and hope. As the two boys locked eyes, I knew my life was about to get more complicated.
Chandler’s jaw clenched, and he stood frozen for a moment. Then, he chuckled.
Turning to me, he forced a smile. “Okay, Sloane,” he said calmly. “Looks like he got what he wanted. I said I’d back off.”
He turned to face Evan, his gaze hardening. “But don’t think you’ve won, pretty boy,” he spat. “This isn’t over.”
With that, he left the room, his footsteps echoing in the sudden silence. The slam of the door left a ringing in my ears, a physical manifestation of the emotional storm within me.
I gazed at the empty doorway, feeling a lump in my throat. The knot in my stomach tightened, a mix of guilt, confusion, and a lingering ache for what could have been
Evan took my hand, his touch comforting. “Don’t worry about him,” he said softly. “He’s just jealous.”
But doubts lingered as I met Evan’s gaze. Was my decision the right one?
I forced a smile. “You’re probably right.” The words tasted bitter, like unwanted medicine.
Evan whispered in my ear, suggesting we leave. The idea was tempting, but guilt held me back. I had just agreed to be his girlfriend, yet Chandler lingered in my thoughts.
Sensing my hesitation, Evan asked, “What’s wrong?” with concern in his voice.
I confessed my worry about Chandler. Evan dismissed it, saying he would get over it. But his reassurance only made me more uneasy.
Struggling with my purse, I finally spoke up. “I need some time alone to think things through.”
Evan’s grin softened as he reached out and gently squeezed my hand. “Hey,” he said, his voice filled with warmth and understanding. “I’m going to grab a coffee in the cafeteria. Want to join me when you’re ready?”
I nodded, my heart heavy with unspoken emotions. “Sure,” I whispered, offering him a small smile in return. “I’ll be down in a bit.”
He leaned in, brushing a stray strand of hair from my face. “Don’t take too long, okay?” He winked playfully, his eyes sparkling with affection. “I’ll save you a seat.”
As he left the room, his footsteps echoing down the hallway, I sank back onto the bed, feeling more lost than ever.
The click of the door latching shut was followed by an oppressive silence. I swung my legs off the bed, the cool linoleum a stark contrast to the warmth of my skin. With a deep breath, I crossed the room to the window, pushing aside the blinds to let in more of the morning sunlight.
The hospital parking lot had a few cars parked, their engines humming softly. A mother walked by with a stroller, passing a blooming dogwood tree with bright pink blossoms. I watched them for a moment, feeling a pang of longing in my heart.
I turned away from the window and took out my phone from my purse. I hesitated before pressing Chandler’s contact. A dozen thoughts raced through my mind, a mix of regret and longing. But before I could call, a wave of nausea hit me, blurring my vision.
I stumbled back to the bed, holding my stomach. The familiar feeling of weakness washed over me, the effects of my illness still clinging to my body. I lay back against the pillows, feeling heavy and overwhelmed.
Had I made a mistake? Had I given up a real connection with Chandler for the temporary attention from Evan? The thought made my stomach churn even more.
As I closed my eyes, memories of Chandler flashed through my mind: his gentle smile, the warmth in his eyes, the way he always made me laugh. A tear rolled down my cheek, smudging the thin layer of makeup I had put on earlier.
Despite the ache in my heart, a glimmer of hope remained. Maybe it wasn’t too late to fix things with Chandler. Maybe there was still a chance for us.
With newfound determination, I reached for my phone again. This time, I pressed down on Chandler’s name, my heart racing with anticipation. As the phone rang, I closed my eyes, hoping that he would answer and that I could find the words to explain everything.
The phone rang twice, then three times, each ring echoing the nervous thump of my heart against my ribs. A knot tightened in my stomach as the call went to voicemail. A wave of disappointment washed over me, threatening to extinguish the tiny ember of hope that had been flickering within me.
But I wasn’t ready to give up just yet. With shaky fingers, I decided to send a text message to Chandler: *“Can we talk? Please.”*
The three dots indicating he was typing appeared almost instantly, then disappeared just as quickly. My breath caught in my throat as I waited for his response.
A moment later, a single word flashed on the screen: *“Where?”*
Relief flooded through me like a cool breeze on a hot day. *“The park by the river,”* I quickly replied, my fingers moving swiftly across the keyboard. *“In fifteen minutes?”*
*“See you there,”* Chandler responded, and just like that, the conversation came to an end.
I tossed aside the hospital blanket and stepped onto the chilly floor with my bare feet. Looking at my reflection in the mirror, I saw my pale face surrounded by messy hair, my eyes swollen from tears. I grabbed a beanie, a cozy knit hat in lavender and gray hues, and covered my shaved head with it. After a quick touch-up, I applied some lip gloss and mascara to complete my look.
I put on my white Converse sneakers, the faded canvas showing all the places they’ve been. After taking a deep breath, I grabbed my purse and walked out the door, leaving the hospital smell and doubts behind.
As I walked outside, the sun was shining warmly and the air smelled like honeysuckle. I felt determined as I made my way to the park, knowing that the conversation waiting for me could completely change everything.
The park was just a short walk from the hospital, and even though I had never been there before, Chandler had talked about it so much. I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness as I finally got to see it. The sun seemed to shine brighter, and the air felt fresher, like the whole world was waiting for us to meet.
As I stepped inside, a calmness washed over me. The park was peaceful, with only the sound of the river and the birds singing in the trees. I quickly spotted Chandler sitting on a worn-out bench under the willow tree. He was hunched over, staring at the water.
My heart raced as I walked towards him. When I reached the bench, he looked up at me with an unreadable expression. I took a deep breath and sat down, making sure to leave some space between us.
“Hey,” I whispered softly.
He nodded in response, his gaze fixed on the river. I nervously played with the strap of my purse, the quietness hanging heavy between us.
“Chandler,” I started, my voice shaking a bit, “I know you’re upset with me...”
He turned to look at me, a mix of pain and confusion in his eyes. “Upset?” he echoed, bitterness evident in his tone. “That’s putting it lightly, Sloane.”
I winced, his words cutting deep. “I messed up,” I confessed, my voice heavy with emotion. “But please, just listen to me.”
He raised an eyebrow, silently urging me to continue. I took a deep breath, preparing myself for the tough conversation ahead.
“I care about you, Chandler,” I rushed out. “More than you can imagine. But things have been so complicated lately, and I... I got carried away with Evan.”
He scoffed, his expression hardening. “Carried away?” he mocked. “Is that what you call it?”
I flinched, his accusation hitting me hard. But I knew he deserved an explanation, no matter how difficult it was to give.
“I know it’s not an excuse,” I murmured. “But I was scared, and lost, and I made a foolish mistake. Please, Chandler, don’t let this be the end for us.”
He stayed quiet for a moment, his eyes searching mine. Then, he spoke, his voice surprisingly gentle.
“I’m not sure, Sloane,” he said, a touch of sadness in his words. “You’ve hurt me. A lot.”
A heavy silence lingered between us, broken only by the rhythmic chirping of a nearby sparrow. His question hung in the air, filled with unspoken accusation. “Why Evan, Sloane?”
I fidgeted nervously, trying to find the right words. “I... I’m not sure,” I admitted, my voice barely audible. “It just happened. He’s funny, he’s enjoyable to be around... but it’s different with you, Chandler.”
I locked eyes with him, my heart racing. “You make me feel understood,” I added, my voice growing stronger. “I can be myself completely with you. It’s... it’s different.”
A glimmer of hope appeared in Chandler’s eyes, quickly overshadowed by doubt. He sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“Sloane,” he started, his voice calm and low, “you mean a lot to me. More than you realize.” He paused, holding my gaze. “And I’ll wait for you. No matter how long it takes.”
Gratitude and guilt swirled within me. I reached for his hand, feeling a sense of comfort wash over me momentarily.
“What about Gracelyn?” I inquired, recalling his recent date. Jealousy pricked at me, despite my own mistakes.
A small smile played on his lips. “Gracelyn? That was just a... distraction. A way to forget about you for a little while.”
His honesty caught me off guard. I leaned in closer, drawn to his warmth and sincerity. “I’m truly sorry, Chandler,” I murmured, my voice thick with emotion. “I never wanted to hurt you.”
He gently held my face in his hands, his gaze softening. “I understand, Sloane. We’ll work through this. Together.”
As our lips met in a tentative kiss, a spark of hope ignited within me for our future. Suddenly, the moment was interrupted by the loud ringing of my phone. I quickly searched through my bag, feeling my heart drop when I noticed Evan’s name on the screen.
“It’s him,” I murmured, barely able to hear my own voice.
Chandler nodded, his jaw clenching. “Go,” he said, his voice thick with resignation. “But remember what I said.”
I stood up from the bench, my legs feeling heavy as lead. I turned to Chandler, a thousand unspoken words lingering in my eyes.
“Thank you,” I whispered, my voice choked with emotion. “For everything.”
With one last lingering look, I turned and walked away, the ringing of my phone growing louder with each step. As I answered the call, Evan’s voice filled my ear, but my thoughts were still with Chandler, and the uncertain path that lay ahead.
