Chapter 19: Whispers of the Heart

The second mysterious text haunted Elliot all afternoon. Who was targeting Jamie now? And why?

By the time the final bell rang, dark clouds had gathered outside, matching Elliot's mood. They hadn't seen Jamie since lunch. His last class was gym, so Elliot headed toward the football field.

Rain started to fall in big, heavy drops as Elliot pushed open the metal gate. The field was empty except for a lone figure sitting on the bleachers, shoulders hunched against the weather.

Jamie.

He didn't look up as Elliot climbed the metal steps, their footsteps echoing in the empty stadium. Rain plastered Jamie's hair to his forehead, but he didn't seem to notice or care.

"You'll catch a cold out here," Elliot said softly.

Jamie's head snapped up. His eyes were redrimmed. Had he been crying?

"You should go home," he said, his voice rough. "It's raining."

"So should you." Elliot sat down beside him, ignoring the cold metal soaking through their jeans. "The team needs you healthy for when you get back."

Jamie laughed bitterly. "The team. Right. I bet they all hate me now."

"That's not true."

"I let them down, Elliot. We've been working toward championships all season, and now I'm missing a key game because I couldn't control my temper."

Thunder rumbled in the distance. The rain fell harder, but neither of them moved.

"You stood up for me," Elliot said, amazed that someone would risk so much for them. "No one's ever done that before."

Jamie turned to face Elliot, rain dripping from his eyelids. "Of course I did. You're important to me."

The easy words made Elliot's heart skip. Their fingers inched closer on the wet bench until they touched. Neither pulled away.

"I'm sorry you got suspended," Elliot whispered.

"I'm not," Jamie answered. "I'd do it again."

A streak of lightning flashed, illuminating Jamie's face. His swollen lip, his determined eyes.

"We should go somewhere dry," Elliot offered, suddenly aware of how soaked they both were.

Jamie nodded. "The gym should be empty now. Coach has a talk with the principal."

They ran across the muddy field, running through puddles and laughing despite everything. By the time they reached the gym doors, they were both soaked from head to toe.

"Here," Jamie said, pulling two towels from his gym bag. "Not exactly dry, but better than nothing."

Elliot took one gratefully. "Thanks."

They sat on the gym floor, backs against the wall, listening to the rain pound against the roof.

"What are you going to do about the scout?" Elliot asked after a while.

Jamie sighed. "Coach said he'd call and explain. Maybe they'll come to another game." He tried to sound hopeful, but Elliot could hear the worry in his voice.

"I'm sorry I've caused so much trouble in your life," Elliot said quietly.

Jamie shook his head firmly. "You haven't caused anything. Ryan and Alex and whoever sent that second text – they're the trouble."

"Speaking of that..." Elliot pulled out their phone. "I've been thinking about who could have sent it. It has to be someone who knows about the scouts coming."

"That could be anyone on the team. Coach announced it last week."

"What about someone who really wants your position? Someone who'd gain if you lost your scholarship?"

Jamie thought for a moment. "Derek's the backup quarterback. He's good, but he's always lived in my shade."

"And he was in the locker room this morning, right?"

Jamie nodded slowly. "Yeah, he was. But Derek's my friend."

"So was Ryan, once," Elliot pointed out.

The gym door creaked open. They both jumped, but it was only the cleaner.

"You kids shouldn't be in here," he called. "School's closed."

"Sorry, Mr. Jenkins," Jamie said, standing up. "We're leaving now."

Outside, the rain had slowed to a drizzle. The late afternoon sun peeked through the clouds, creating a golden glow over the wet campus.

"I should get home," Elliot said. "Mom will worry."

"I'll walk you," Jamie offered.

They walked in easy silence, puddles splashing under their feet. Halfway to Elliot's house, Jamie reached for their hand. His palm was warm against Elliot's cold fingers.

"Can I ask you something?" Jamie said suddenly.

"Sure."

"The winter formal is next month. Would you go with me?"

Elliot stopped walking. "Like, as your date?"

Jamie's cheeks flushed. "Yeah. As my date."

A warm glow spread through Elliot's chest, chasing away the chill of their wet clothes. "I'd love to."

Jamie's smile was brighter than the sun breaking through the clouds. He leaned closer, his eyes asking a question. Elliot replied by closing the distance between them.

The kiss was soft and quick, but it left Elliot dizzy with happiness.

"I've wanted to do that for a while," Jamie revealed.

"Me too."

They kept walking, hands swinging between them, hearts lighter despite the day's troubles.

When they reached Elliot's house, Mom was waiting at the window. She waved when she saw them.

"Will you be okay?" Elliot asked, hesitant to let go of Jamie's hand.

"I will now," he said, squeezing their fingers once before releasing them. "Text me later?"

"Promise."

Elliot watched Jamie walk away, their lips still tingly from the kiss. Maybe everything would be okay after all.

Inside, Mom took one look at Elliot's wet clothes and dreamy face and raised an eyebrow.

"Good day?" she asked, giving them a dry towel.

"The best," Elliot answered.

After changing into dry clothes and helping Mom with dinner, Elliot went to their room and pulled out their notebook. They began drawing Jamie as they'd seen him today – sitting in the rain, fragile yet strong.

Their phone buzzed with a text from Megan.

EMERGENCY! Call me NOW!

Elliot dialed her number instantly. "Megan? What's wrong?"

"Have you seen social media?" she asked, her voice tight with fear.

"No, I just got home. Why?"

"Someone made a fake account claiming to be you. They're posting awful things about Jamie and the team."

Elliot's blood ran cold. "What?"

"It's bad, Elliot. Really bad. They're saying Jamie cheated on his tests and that's how he stays on the team. They're saying you have proof but were keeping quiet because you two are dating."

"That's crazy! I would never say that!"

"I know, but everyone's sharing it. The whole school's talking about it."

Elliot's hands shook as they opened the social media app. The fake account was easy to find – it had their name and picture, but the username was slightly different from their real one.

The latest post made their stomach lurch: Jamie Carter isn't the perfect boy everyone thinks. I've seen his test results. Ask Coach Wilson why he REALLY got banned. Truth CheatersNeverWin

"This is insane," Elliot whispered. "Jamie would never cheat."

"I know, but this is going viral. People are tagging the college scouts."

Horror washed over Elliot. If the scouts saw this, Jamie's scholarship would be dead.

"We have to tell Jamie," Elliot said, already calling his number.

No answer.

They tried again. Still nothing.

"He's probably at home. I'll go over there," Elliot decided.

"It's dark out," Megan warned. "And what about the person who's doing this? They could be watching you."

As if on cue, a new text arrived from an unknown number:

Like my artwork? This is just the beginning. Stay away from Jamie if you don't want his life totally ruined. Your choice, Harper.

Fear gripped Elliot's heart. This was worse than anything Ryan had done. This could destroy Jamie's career.

"Elliot? You still there?" Megan asked.

"Yeah," they whispered. "Megan, what do I do?"

Another text buzzed through:

One more thing. If you tell anyone about these messages, or if you warn Jamie, I'll make sure everyone sees the "evidence" I've made. Tick tock.

Elliot sank onto their bed, mind racing. Someone was deliberately trying to tear Jamie's life apart – and using Elliot to do it.

They had to make a choice: fight back and risk Jamie losing everything, or walk away from the first person who truly saw them.

Either way, someone's heart would break.
