Chapter 45 - An Alliance Forged in the Shadows

**- Luke's POV - **

Luke paced through the woods, his anger boiling over with each step. Ethan had humiliated him, had stormed in and spoiled everything. He could still feel the sting of Ethan’s fist where it collided with his jaw, a stark reminder that he’d been pushed aside, again, in favor of that self-righteous Alpha. And all because of Sophia.

He couldn’t shake the image of her standing there, her eyes wide with fear but still choosing him. That was supposed to be his moment with her—finally. He’d been patient, hovering close, always there for her at the bar, playing the steady confidant, waiting for her to notice him. She was supposed to be his, not Ethan’s.

The night air was cool, and his breath puffed in visible clouds as he continued deeper into the woods, each step crunching leaves and snapping twigs. He walked without direction, letting his anger lead him. His thoughts whirled with a growing bitterness, dark intentions rising like a storm.

Suddenly, a movement in the shadows caught his attention. He stopped, instincts kicking in, and his eyes adjusted to the shape emerging through the trees. A she-wolf with a silvery coat glided into view, graceful and composed, her eyes gleaming like polished stones. Luke knew that gaze instantly. Adrienne.

The she-wolf shifted, her form stretching and morphing until Adrienne stood before him, human once again but with an air of mystery and menace that never seemed to fade. Her dark eyes glinted with something that made him uneasy, yet he couldn’t look away.

“What are you doing out here?” he asked, his voice still edged with the remnants of his anger. He didn’t have time for whatever scheme Adrienne was surely brewing, yet he couldn’t help feeling drawn to her as she approached him, a slight smirk on her face.

Adrienne folded her arms, her gaze never leaving his face. “I could ask you the same thing. But I think I already know.”

Luke scoffed, turning away, only for her to step in front of him, blocking his path with surprising determination. Her smirk widened as if she’d just confirmed something.

“Let me guess,” she continued. “This is about Ethan. And... Sophia.” Her voice lingered on the name, twisting it with disdain.

The mere mention of Sophia’s name coming from Adrienne’s lips made his muscles tense. “This has nothing to do with you, Adrienne,” he said sharply, trying to push past her, but she held her ground.

“On the contrary, I think it does.” Adrienne’s smile widened. “Ethan thinks he can just throw us aside, doesn’t he? Like we’re disposable.”

Luke’s jaw clenched, the anger simmering just beneath the surface. He met Adrienne’s gaze, a silent understanding passing between them. She, too, had felt Ethan’s disregard, his preference for someone else. For Sophia.

“I don’t care what he thinks of me,” Luke lied, though the sting of his words told him otherwise. “But Sophia... She was mine. And he stole her right out from under me.”

Adrienne’s eyes gleamed with a dangerous interest. “Oh, I know the feeling. Trust me.” Her voice turned softer, almost coaxing. “But it doesn’t have to end this way. You and I... we’re both powerful in our own right. If we wanted to, we could make sure that Ethan regrets ever crossing us.”

A ripple of intrigue flickered through Luke. Adrienne was cunning, unpredictable, and he’d always known better than to trust her completely. But her offer... There was a certain allure to the idea of turning the tables, of taking what he wanted and watching Ethan pay the price.

“What do you have in mind?” he asked, his voice low and wary.

Adrienne’s smirk deepened. “Ethan’s too wrapped up in his little mate bond. He thinks Sophia’s his whole world, that she’s some beacon of light or whatever ridiculous fantasy he’s cooked up. But she’s vulnerable, Luke. She’s human, and humans... they break so easily.” Her eyes sparkled with a mixture of satisfaction and cruelty.

Luke’s stomach twisted, torn between his anger at Ethan and his protectiveness over Sophia. He hadn’t been lying when he told her he cared. He’d watched her, gotten to know her gentle spirit, her resilience, the way she worked tirelessly at that bar. But then he remembered Ethan barging in, the smug satisfaction on his face as he pulled Sophia away, and his resolve hardened.

Adrienne’s voice turned soft and conspiratorial as she stepped closer, her gaze holding him in a dark trance. “Ethan’s made you feel like second best for long enough, hasn’t he? And Sophia... Well, maybe it’s time for her to understand just what she’s chosen by being with him.”

Luke nodded slowly, his mind racing. This was his chance to show Ethan he couldn’t take everything away from him, couldn’t waltz in and claim every part of Luke’s life as his own. Sophia was his, too—or she would be. He’d make sure of it.

“So, what’s your plan?” he asked, meeting Adrienne’s gaze, allowing himself to be pulled into her twisted scheme.

Adrienne’s smile turned calculating, her eyes narrowing as she glanced around the forest, as though ensuring no one else was listening. “First, we watch and wait. I have my ways of getting information... places Ethan doesn’t even think to look. We’ll need to make sure we’re precise. No mistakes. And when we move in, it’ll be too late for him to do anything about it.”

Luke felt a cold sense of anticipation settle over him, the anger within him sharpening into something darker and more satisfying. “And when this is done?” he asked. “What happens to Ethan?”

Adrienne chuckled, a sound that sent a shiver down his spine. “Oh, he’ll know what it’s like to lose what he loves most. To feel powerless. Just like he’s made us feel.”

The idea simmered in Luke’s mind, the vision of Ethan brought low, forced to watch helplessly as his own world unraveled. And Sophia... well, she might not see him as her hero right now, but perhaps once she saw what Ethan was really capable of, she’d understand.

Adrienne took a step back, her gaze glinting with satisfaction. “We’ll be in touch, Luke. And remember... patience is key. Don’t let him see you coming.”

As she slipped back into the trees, transforming back into her sleek wolf form and disappearing into the shadows, Luke stood there, a sense of purpose filling him. He was done being second to Ethan, done watching from the sidelines. This time, he would claim his place, whatever it took.

With one final look toward the direction Adrienne had gone, he turned, retreating into the darkness with a new resolve and a dangerous plan beginning to take shape.
