Chapter 76 Sleep Here
Genesis's POV:
In the examination room, the doctor performed many tests on me and asked some related questions.
Seeing his serious expression, I couldn't help but feel nervous, and a trace of involuntary hope rose in my heart.
The doctor pondered for a moment. "According to our examination results, there's nothing wrong with you physically. That means your muteness is caused by psychological issues, which would require systematic psychological treatment."
"When can it be cured?" Eli frowned and pressed.
The doctor shook his head helplessly. "The human psyche is very complex. Even with psychological treatment, there's no guarantee of complete recovery. It ultimately depends on the patient herself."
"Regardless, let's start treatment first." Eli nodded decisively to the doctor, but I grabbed his arm.
\[I don't want psychological treatment.\] I was extremely resistant.
I didn't want to expose the truth about my parents' deaths during psychological treatment, and I didn't want Jordan to know I still remembered those things.
Even now, I remembered clearly. Those people's movements were very professional. After killing my parents, they kept searching through the villa for a long time, obviously looking for something.
Professional killers and mysteriously hidden items. It was obvious this wasn't simple.
I had to be careful, very careful, to ensure the people behind this wouldn't notice anything.
No one around me could be trusted.
Eli was shocked. He stared at me in confusion. "Don't you want to be able to speak and communicate with me normally?"
Of course I wanted to speak, but I couldn't accept psychological treatment.
I lowered my eyes. \[We can use sign language.\]
Eli laughed bitterly. "Again! Even though I can understand your sign language, I'd rather communicate with you normally. I want to hear you say 'I love you' and 'I miss you!' Instead of every time you don't respond, I'm left alone getting angry and upset, like performing a one-man show!"
Eli covered his forehead, then angrily pounded the table.
"I hate this! I hate that you can't communicate with me!"
My heart sank, feeling extremely sad.
I used to think Eli was different, at least he was willing to learn sign language to communicate with me.
But now I understood he wasn't different from the others.
In their eyes, I was always a mute who couldn't speak or make sounds.
Even though my grades far exceeded other students, even though I always behaved obediently. In their eyes, I was always defective.
Just because I couldn't speak, I had to endure more bullying and harassment.
Just because I couldn't speak, they didn't need to ask my opinion. They were even too lazy to read what I wrote.
Seeing I still gave no reaction, Eli heavily hit the wheelchair's armrest. He was extremely disappointed. "Fine, whatever you want."
Without waiting for me to help push his wheelchair, he wheeled himself out.
Back in Eli's hospital room, quite a few Martinez family members had arrived.
Jordan frowned at the wound on his leg and said grimly, "I'll definitely investigate who was bold enough to attempt to assassinate you."
Eli scoffed. "Investigation is easy, but whether you'll be willing to punish them afterward is another story."
I knew Eli was hinting that Christian did this. Christian had always opposed Eli all these years.
Jordan angrily scolded, "Eli! Shut up!"
Eli smiled mockingly and said nothing more.
The same result again. Although Jordan doted on Eli, when it came to Eli and Christian competing for the family, he always favored Christian.
"I'll arrange for a maid to come to the hospital to take care of you these next few days..." Jordan stiffly changed the subject, but was interrupted by Eli again.
He lazily pointed at me. "No need. Let Genesis take care of me."
"Nonsense!" Jordan scolded. "Genesis isn't a servant. What are you talking about?"
Eli didn't care about Jordan's scolding at all and smiled mockingly instead.
"You've been treating her like a servant for quite some time anyway. Isn't it too late to realize this now?" Eli said fearlessly.
"You!" Jordan glared at him fiercely.
Jordan eventually agreed to Eli's request. Unsurprisingly, no one asked for my opinion.
Whether it was Jordan or Eli, their argument focused on convincing each other. No one thought to ask if I was willing.
Right, a helpless orphan girl. Besides accepting their demands, how could I dare to truly refuse?
After everyone else left, night gradually fell.
I originally wanted to sleep on the sofa, but Eli grabbed my wrist.
In the dim light, his eyes were bright and his palm still burning hot. With one pull, I lost my balance and fell into his arms, held tightly around the waist.
"Sleep here."
We argued back and forth. Considering he was injured, I had to lie down.
Lying beside him, my whole body was stiff as a board, wishing I could stay as far from Eli as possible.
Just as I was getting drowsy, he suddenly spoke. "Why won't you accept psychological treatment? What secret are you hiding in your heart that makes you prefer to remain unable to speak rather than tell it? As long as you tell me, I'll definitely help you."
I closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep.
I had already accepted too much of Eli's kindness. I didn't want to drag him into this secret too.
Besides, once he knew what I had done, not killing me would be merciful. How could he possibly help me investigate those things?
Living alone outside the Martinez family for so many years, the clearest lesson I learned was never to easily give up your weakness.
Not ever.
After a long time, Eli sighed deeply. "I know you're not asleep, but I respect you."
I was somewhat surprised.
I had thought Eli would persistently force me to reveal the secret. I had even started making up excuses in my mind.
I never expected he would give up pursuing it.
My heart softened for a moment. Whether he truly gave up or was pretending to give up, I should thank him for not continuing to ask.
Early the next morning, I took advantage of Susan coming to the hospital with breakfast to get Eli's medicine.
But as soon as I walked out of the room, someone covered my mouth and dragged me toward the stairwell!
