Chapter 4 How Could a Good Thing Be Missing Nathan?
"Regret? What do I have to regret?"
Theresa froze for a moment, then couldn't help but let out a scornful laugh.
"Anthony, you really think too highly of yourself. Even at this point, you still can't see what you really are?"
"Let me make this crystal clear—breaking off our engagement is the smartest decision I've ever made in my life. I, Theresa Gervin, will never regret canceling our engagement!"
Anthony's expression remained calm, and he even shrugged.
"Suit yourself."
He had zero interest in even looking at such a shallow woman.
Theresa was stunned.
Anthony's indifferent attitude, his complete lack of concern, caught her completely off guard.
On her way here, she'd imagined a thousand different scenarios.
But the one thing she hadn't expected was that this man fresh out of prison would agree so quickly, without a moment's hesitation.
Had her charm somehow failed? Shouldn't he be on his knees begging her not to break off the engagement?
Her insecurities as a woman made her mind race with doubts.
But the next second, she figured it out.
This must be Anthony's way of trying to keep her.
"Anthony, face reality. Even if you play this hard-to-get game with me, I'll never marry you! I'm way out of your league now."
Anthony didn't respond. Instead, he calmly picked up the engagement contract their families had signed, tore it to pieces, and tossed it in the trash. "Alright, Ms. Gervin, our engagement is over. You can leave now."
Anthony's actions left Alice and Michael standing nearby completely shocked.
Theresa was equally dumbfounded.
Seeing that Anthony showed no intention of asking her to stay and had even told her to leave, Theresa didn't go. Instead, she let out a cold laugh, convinced he was just putting on an act, playing hard to get.
Anthony looked up, his tone indifferent. "Anything else?"
"You're really stubborn, aren't you?" Theresa crossed her arms, looking down at him with a tone full of condescending arrogance. "I'm not completely heartless. For the sake of our past engagement, I'll throw you a lifeline. You can be my personal driver. But let me be clear—even though I'm giving you a job, I won't pay you a cent. Don't worry though, I won't let you starve. Consider it charity."
In her mind, someone like Anthony—fresh out of prison with nothing to his name—should be grateful for any chance to stay by her side, even as an unpaid driver.
Anthony's lips curved into a faint, mocking smile, his eyes filled with the indifference one shows an ant. "No thanks."
He paused, then said coldly and clearly, "In my eyes, the Gervin family is nothing more than ants. Forget being a security guard—even if you offered me the position of family head, I wouldn't want it."
Theresa hadn't expected Anthony to be such a braggart.
She clenched her fists tightly and sneered, "I never thought prison would teach you nothing except how to talk big! Go ahead and act tough. I'll be waiting to see how long you can keep this up. I'll be there the day you come crawling back on your knees begging me! Let's go!"
With that, Theresa couldn't stand to stay another second. She stormed out with her bodyguards in tow.
The door slammed shut, and Alice and Michael finally snapped out of their shock, immediately panicking.
"Anthony, have you lost your mind! Go after Ms. Theresa Gervin right now and apologize!" Alice rushed forward, scolding Anthony harshly, her face full of anxiety.
Michael also looked stern, his tone forceful. "Go apologize to Ms. Theresa Gervin immediately. Drop that pathetic pride of yours. Whatever she asks, you agree to it!"
Anthony looked at these foster parents who had raised him for years but had always been biased and cold. He felt no anger, only a bone-deep chill.
He never imagined that after three years of hell in prison, after enduring endless darkness and returning exhausted to this so-called home, he'd be met not with concern, but with humiliation from his fiancée and unreasonable pressure from his foster parents.
In the past, he might have still held some hope for this family.
But now, he only found it laughable and heartbreaking.
He stood there, looking coldly at the two of them. "I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize? She's shallow and materialistic, and she humiliated me repeatedly. A woman like that—I'm better off without her. She's the one who's blind, throwing away the incredible wealth that was within her reach. That's not on me."
"You! You're impossible!" Alice trembled with rage, her face full of contempt. "You just got out of prison and you dare talk about incredible wealth? I think prison made you stupid! I'm ordering you—go after Ms. Theresa Gervin right now, get on your knees and apologize, and beg for her forgiveness no matter what!"
"That's right." Michael's face was dark as a storm cloud, his tone delivering an ultimatum. "Even just having a chance to join the Gervin family would be an incredible opportunity for you. Do as we say, or get out of this house!"
Seeing his foster parents' selfish faces, completely disregarding his feelings, Anthony smiled faintly, though his eyes turned completely cold.
"If it's such a great opportunity like you say, why not have Nathan do it?"
He knew full well that these foster parents had always favored Nathan, giving him all their love. Now that there was such an "incredible opportunity," how could they really be thinking of him? They just wanted to use him to climb up to the Gervin family.
After saying this, Anthony didn't spare his cold-hearted foster parents another glance. Without hesitation, he turned and strode toward the door.
"Anthony! If you leave, don't ever come back!" Behind him, Alice screamed hysterically, beside herself with rage.
Anthony didn't pause for a second. Without looking back, he left this home that had long since lost any warmth.
Watching Anthony's determined departure, Alice turned red with anger, stomping her feet. "Look at that ungrateful wretch! He's never cared about this family or us as his parents!"
Michael bit his lip, but suddenly a meaningful cold smile appeared on his face. He reached out and grabbed his furious wife's arm.
Alice didn't catch on at first, looking confused. "Michael, what do you mean? He's about to drive us crazy and you're smiling?"
"I'm thinking that what he said earlier wasn't entirely wrong." Michael's eyes gleamed with calculation. "That ungrateful fool is throwing away such a good opportunity. Isn't Nathan a hundred times better than him? Since the engagement's been canceled, why not have Nathan pursue Ms. Gervin? Maybe there's really a chance."
Alice's eyes lit up instantly. Her anger vanished, replaced by excitement as she lowered her voice. "You're right! Why didn't I think of that! That idiot doesn't know what's good for him, so this great chance to connect with the Gervin family naturally goes to our Nathan! Once Nathan becomes part of the Gervin family, that big development project in Amber District will be ours for the taking!"
But her excitement lasted only a moment before her face fell again, and she sighed helplessly. "That's all well and good, but Ms. Gervin just said she's going to a party hosted by the Campbell Group. That's not the kind of event we can just walk into. Even if we want to get close to her, we can't even meet her!"
