Chapter 15: Memory

Edgar opened his eyes slightly and looked at the bed post, it was his room and he wondered how he got there. He felt no pain in his body and had healed fully from the mountain ash that was completely burned out. He looked outside the window to see it was almost dark and he realized that he has slept for most time of the day.

Remembering the amount of pain he felt when the fire burned his insides, he wasn’t sure he would’ve endured such pain if she wasn’t there with him. His mind drifted back to the fight in the cabin between him and the human hounds, they were too strong for normal humans and he knew that his brother Skylar was feeding them something normal humans don’t eat.

Mountain ash was such a rare substance that even werewolf hunters travel half the world to acquire it. Edgar’s main concern was how there were so many of it only in this pack house, how was his brother getting this lethal substance.

He needed to act fast, his brother will keep on doing worse things each day and it was his responsibility to stop him but first he has to look for solid evidence against him to make sure that the council see no reason to reject his claim to the throne.

He decided to visit Elaine next door just to find out how she was doing, he walked out of his room and to his surprise, there was no one in front of her room door. He gently walks towards the door and opens it gently and there she was, sleeping peacefully on her bed like an angel. After shutting the door behind him, he walked closer to her and sat beside her on her bed.

He sat there watching her and time went by the day getting darker and darker, and he didn’t feel an itch of discomfort as he patiently waited for her to wake up.

In a deep sleep when he saw her brows furrow, she seemed very troubled in her dream. She started thrashing the bed and Edgar’s worry spiked.

“Elaine!! Elaine!!” He called out for her, trying to wake her up from her dream but there was no response.

“Come on, wake up” He said as he shook her slightly hoping to jerk her back to reality but it seems that she was not going to wake up.

“Elaine!! Elaine!!” He continued calling her and suddenly her body went still, she changed to a sitting position with her eyes still closed.

“Ahhhh” she screamed in a very high pitch that could damage the ears of a human. Alex closed his ears with his palm to avoid them bleeding afterwards.

“Edgar!!” She shuddered in fear of her own self as she realized that she had been asleep all this while and was woken up by her own scream.

“I’m here, shh” he said and opened his arms as she rushed towards the side of the bed where he sat and hugged him tightly.

“I was so scared” she said as tears flowed down her eyes and her body trembled in fear.

“Its alright, you’re safe now” Edgar said as he enveloped her in an embrace.

After few moments, Elaine’s breath stabled but she did not still let go of Edgar as she felt safe in his arms.

“Do you want to tell me about it?” Edgar said trying to make her open up and share what she saw with him.

“My parents, they were killed all over again right before my eyes and all I did was be a good girl and stay right where I was asked to” she said, her voice sounding very cold and emotionless.

“I’m so sorry Elaine” he said.

“Don’t be sorry Eddy, you weren’t at fault” she said sniffing.

“What else did you see in this dream? Is there something different about the chains of events leading to what happened that day?” He said with worry in his eyes.

“I didn’t do anything to fight for them, but in reality I killed the man that came for them” she said staring into blank space as she remembered the gruesome event of that night and just how much it have affected her.

“What if I don’t know what’s the truth anymore? Elaine said almost in tears.

“Someone is trying to manipulate your memory but your stone remembers, you know what happened that night and how you saved your parents” Edgar said as he looked at her straight in the eye.

“Elaine run, run and don’t look back, that’s what my mother said to me that night. I knew that my mother was trying to save me but if I ran away now and left my wounded mother, she wouldn’t have been able to kill the man and he would had eventually come for me” she paused as she choked on her own words and tears fell down her eyes.

“It’s alright, you don’t have to say it” he said placing his hand on her cheek.

“I want to say it, I need to remind myself before it completely fades away from my mind” she said placing her her on his own that rested in her cheek.

“I’m listening” Edgar said.

“He threatened my mother, holding her neck and suffocating life out from her, when he saw he would get nothing from her he turned towards the stairs headed for my room. I launched at him with a knife I got from the kitchen, I stabbed him in his chest and stomach, but he still stood as he was a very huge man. He tried to catch me but I was faster, I pushed him towards the staircase, he broke his neck and fell to the ground” she stopped and took in a deep breath.

“I stabbed him the first time and I did it again and again hoping to feel the guilt that comes with killing someone. Instead I felt nothing but satisfaction, watching him choke on his own blood was the most satisfying scene I have seen all my life. I rushed towards my mother and held her as she slowly returned to the ancestors, life slipping away from her. When she was gone I continued holding her sitting on the cold hard floor with her body in my arms till morning” Elaine said and she gave a sigh of relief.

“It’s alright, you are better and stronger now” Edgar said to her softly as he held her.

“Yes I am” she said and he hugged her gently rubbing her back softly.

“Thank you for being here Eddy” she said holding him tightly.

“I’ll always be here” he said and she could feel the warmth, its being so long since anyone cared for her like he did.

“I’m so hungry” Elaine said chuckling when her stomach rumbled.

“I’ll send your food here, I need to go visit Bran, just to know how he’s doing” Edgar said as they let go of each other.

“I’ll come with you” Elaine said as she came down from the bed all ready to go.

“But you’re hungry” Edgar said.

“I’ll eat dinner downstairs” she replied.

“Alright” he said and they both left the room while Oliver and Randy followed them behind.
