Chapter 172 Chapter 172
Slowly, carefully, as if he were handling the most fragile piece of glass in the universe, Dr. Wynn stepped over and placed our son directly onto my bare chest, draped under a warm blanket. The moment the baby felt my skin and heard my heartbeat, his sharp cries softened into small, snuffling breaths. Nikolai leaned over us, his massive frame shielding both of us from the room. He stared down at our son, taking in his thick mop of dark hair, his perfect tiny hands, and the sharp, miniature line of his jaw that was an exact copy of his father's.
"He's..." Nikolai rasped, his voice breaking entirely, tears spilling over his eyelashes and tracking down his dark, stubbled cheeks. He reached out with one massive, trembling hand, his index finger gently touching the baby's tiny palm. Our son's tiny, miniature fingers immediately curled around Nikolai’s big finger, holding on with a surprisingly firm, fierce grip.
Nikolai let out a low, rough sob, a sound of total, unadulterated devotion that tore straight through my heart. He bowed his dark head, pressing his face into the side of my neck, his broad arms wrapping completely around both me and our son, holding us against his heaving chest.
"You did it,love," he sobbed softly against my skin, his gravelly voice thick with tears and absolute adoration. "You brought my son. You gave me an heir."
"Our son, Nikolai," I whispered, my own tears falling freely now as I rested my hand over his dark head, holding my boys close against my heart. "Our continuation."
An hour later, the room was quiet, sterile equipment packed away, leaving only the soft glow of the stone fireplace and the clear golden light of the winter morning filling the suite.
I sat propped up against the heavy pillows, wearing a clean robe, holding our sleeping son wrapped securely in the hand-embroidered white wool blanket Cousin Sofia had sent from Genoa. The heavy double doors opened quietly. Pedro walked in first, followed by Anabella, Maria, Stefan, Alessio and Esme. They stepped into the room with quiet, reverent steps, their faces filled with deep emotion.
Nikolai stood beside the bed, standing tall, proud, and completely unshakeable. But the dark, cold paranoia that had governed his eyes for thirty-six years was gone forever, replaced by the calm, formidable majesty of a father protecting his blood. Pedro walked up to the edge of the bed, his sharp dark eyes glistening as he looked down at the tiny sleeping face in my arms.
"Look at him," Pedro breathed softly, a proud, emotional smile breaking across his weathered features. "He has the Ferro brow. The iron line."
"What is his name, Isla?" Anabella asked quietly, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.
I looked up at Nikolai, taking his broad, calloused hand in mine and weaving our fingers tightly together.
"Alexander Nikolai Ferro," I announced, my voice clear, steady, and rich with sovereign pride. "The future Don of Riverside."
Pedro let out a low, breathless laugh, bowing his head respectfully to the bed. "Alexander. A strong name. A King's name."
Maria stepped up, placing a small gold cross on the blanket beside Alexander's head, crossing herself with a soft, tearful blessing in Italian before retreating to let us rest. Stefan, Alessio and Esme offered quiet, broad smiles, clapping Nikolai heavily on the shoulder before the family slowly filed out to leave the new parents in peace.
When the heavy oak doors clicked shut, the bedroom fell into a deep, beautiful stillness. Nikolai climbed onto the mattress beside me, pulling his legs up, sliding his arm under my shoulders, and dragging us both against his chest. His heavy right hand came down, resting flat over Alexander's small body, covering his son and his wife under a single, impenetrable shield.
"Alexander," he whispered low, testing the name against his rough tongue, pressing a lingering kiss against my temple, then down onto our son's soft dark hair.
"He is safe, Nikolai," I murmured, resting my head against his shoulder, closing my eyes in complete, peaceful surrender to the warm rhythm of his heart. "Our world is completely secure."
"No one touches him," he growled softly, not with fear, but with the eternal, absolute promise of an invincible sovereign. "No one touches either of you."
Outside our windows, the winter sun rose high over the Atlantic, illuminating the grand stone walls of Riverside. The empire was secure. The bloodline was unbroken. And the dynasty of Isla and Nikolai Ferro had officially begun its eternal reign.
