Chapter 171 Chapter 171
Before I could even speak, his broad frame shifted over the mattress, his dark hair disheveled, his eyes wide and sharp with hyper-vigilant intensity. His hand was flat against my stomach in less than a second, feeling the rigid tension under my skin. "Isla," he growled low, his gravelly voice dropping an octave, raw with an edge of fear he couldn't mask. "What is it?"
"A contraction," I breathed out softly, forcing myself to relax my shoulders, holding his fierce gaze as the pressure peaked and slowly began to recede. "A real one."
His jaw locked so hard I heard the click of his teeth. For nine months, he had fought international rivalries, fortified a coastal fortress, and commanded armies of loyal men. But standing at the edge of this threshold, where his iron couldn't fight the natural force bringing our child into the world he looked like a titan forced to watch the horizon break.
He threw off the heavy quilt, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. "I'm calling Evelyn."
"Nikolai," I called softly, reaching out and catching his broad wrist. My touch anchored him instantly. "Take a breath. We have time. The doctor said the early stages take hours."
He looked down at my hand wrapping around his wrist, then looked at my face. His chest expanded as he drew a long, ragged breath, pulling my fingers up to press a hard, desperate kiss against my knuckles. "You don't suffer in this house, Isla," he growled low, his thumb stroking my skin with a fierce, possessive tremor. "Not for a single minute." He picked up the bedside comms unit and pressed the direct line to the medical wing. "Evelyn. Up here. Now."
By four in the morning, the master bedroom had been converted into a private, high-security delivery room. Dr. Evelyn Wynn and two senior obstetrical nurses had set up their diagnostic monitors, sterile instruments, and specialized lighting with quiet, surgical speed. Downstairs, the estate was locked down tight under Wesley and Jules’s command. Pedro and Anabella waited in the private gallery outside our double doors, maintaining a quiet, reverent vigil.
Inside the bedroom, the world had narrowed down to two people: me and Nikolai. He had stripped off his suit jacket, rolling the dark sleeves of his dress shirt up to his elbows. He sat on the edge of the mattress right beside me, his body angled over mine like a protective shield. Every time a contraction hit, growing stronger, closer, and more intense every twenty minutes, Nikolai’s left arm locked around my back, supporting my shoulders, while his right hand held mine in a crushing, unyielding grip.
He didn't look at the monitors. He didn't look at Dr. Wynn. His eyes were locked on my face, reading every subtle shift in my expression, his breathing synchronized with mine. "Focus on me, love." He said softly against my temple, his gravelly voice a deep, vibrating anchor that cut right through the rising waves of pain. "Look at me. Give the pain to me."
"I am... looking at you," I gasped out, my knuckles white in his grasp as another contraction hit , my other hand digging into his shoulder through his shirt.
"You're doing perfectly, Isla," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly with a raw, intense emotion that made tears sting my eyes. He leaned down, pressing his forehead hard against mine, his hot breath brushing my lips. "You are the strongest thing in this world. My Queen. My life."
"Seven centimeters, Madam Ferro," Dr. Wynn announced smoothly from the foot of the bed, her voice a calm, professional baseline. "Progression is moving very rapidly. You are doing exceptionally well." As the hours stretched toward dawn, the contractions merged into a relentless, surging tide. I didn't scream. I had survived corporate wars, assassination attempts, torture from Alistair, Blair and Vivian I channeled every ounce of my formidable strength into bringing our heir into the light.
When a particularly severe contraction ripped through my body, I let out a soft, sharp groan, my teeth catching my lower lip. Nikolai turned his dark head toward Dr. Wynn , his eyes flashing with a terrifying, lethal fury. "Fix it!" he growled, his voice a low, animalistic roar of total protectiveness. "Give her something! Make it stop!"
"Nikolai, no!" I panted, tightening my grip on his hand until my fingers trembled, pulling his face back to mine. "Look at me! This is how... how our baby comes to us. Stay with me!"
He chest heaved as he forced his deadly focus back onto my eyes. The unhinged, protective rage melted into pure, absolute surrender to my voice.
"I am here," he rasped, bowing his head to press a slow, trembling kiss against my sweaty forehead. "I am right here. I am not leaving you." At six-fifteen, as the first pale, golden rays of winter sunlight broke over the stormy Atlantic ocean outside our balcony windows, the final moment arrived.
"Full dilation," Dr. Wynn called out calmly, her hands ready. "On the next contraction, Isla... push." I gathered every breath in my lungs, every ounce of power in my body, and leaned into Nikolai’s heavy, immovable frame. His arm supported my back, lifting my weight effortlessly, his face inches from mine, his gravelly voice chanting our strength like a sacred oath. “Okay Push" Dr Wynn said.
I pushed. The world dissolved into a blinding white focus, the roar of the ocean outside, the warmth of Nikolai’s hands, the thunderous beat of his heart against my back. I pushed with everything I had, giving everything I was to the life we had created together. "Head is clear!" Dr. Wynn called out, excitement cracking her professional tone. "One more, Isla! Give me one more!"
I drew a long, sharp breath, my fingers digging into Nikolai’s arm, and gave one final, fierce, triumphant push. At six-twenty-two in the morning, a loud, clear, furious cry cut through the quiet room. A sharp, ringing, unyielding scream that echoed off the high timber beams of the master bedroom a voice full of power and life.
Waaah! Waaah!
I collapsed back against the pillows, my chest heaving, my skin slick with sweat, my body completely exhausted and completely victorious. Dr. Wynn deftly wrapped the baby in a warm, sterile white towel and held the tiny, squirming bundle up into the light of the morning sun. "A boy," Dr. Wynn declared with a bright, radiant smile. "A healthy, beautiful, perfect baby boy."
Nikolai froze. The Don of Riverside, the man who ruled an international empire with an iron fist sat completely motionless on the edge of the bed. His broad chest rose and fell in short, sharp hitches. He stared at the tiny, crying child wrapped in the white cloth, his pitch-black eyes wide, unblinking, and suddenly filled with bright, overflowing tears.
The raw, primitive instinct that had kept him on guard for nine months collapsed into a profound, overwhelming wave of pure, unshielded reverence.
"Nikolai..." I whispered, my voice faint but full of boundless love, reaching up to touch his damp cheek.
