Chapter 169 Chapter 169

Chapter 169 Chapter 169
Late that night, long after the rest of the house had fallen quiet and the estate was wrapped in a cool, misty coastal fog, Nikolai and I stood together inside the nursery.
The main lamps were turned off, leaving only the warm, golden glow of the stone fireplace casting long, peaceful shadows across the dark hardwood floor. I sat back in the leather glider chair near the arched window, dressed in a soft white robe, my feet resting on the footstool.

Nikolai sat on the floor right beside my chair, his back resting against the base of the armrest. His broad frame took up half the space, his long legs stretched out over the rug. He didn't have his phone. He didn't have his work tablet. His heavy, hand rested flat over my stomach, his thumb stroking gentle, steady patterns over the silk of my robe. I reached down, my fingers threading through his dark, thick hair.

"Are you happy, Nikolai?" I whispered into the quiet room. He remained silent for a moment, his pitch-black eyes staring into the soft flickers of the fireplace.
"I have spent thirty-six years waiting for the world to strike at me, Isla. I grew up believing that peace was an illusion, and that love was a weakness men used to destroy each other." he said. He turned his head slightly, looking up at me in the dim firelight, his eyes burning with an absolute, unshakeable devotion that made my heart race.

"Now I sit in this room with you, holding our child beneath my hand, surrounded by an empire that no man can touch," he whispered, his hand pressing warm and firm over my bump. "I am not just happy, Queen. I am invincible." I smiled down at him, my heart overflowing with a deep, boundless love for the fierce, terrifying titan who held my world in his hands.

"We are invincible, Nikolai," I murmured, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against his forehead. He growled softly in his chest, reaching up to cover my hand with his, his thumb stroking my skin as the rain tapped softly against the reinforced glass, watching over our sleeping sanctuary until the dawn. By the start of my eighth month, the autumn winds off the Atlantic had turned razor-sharp, driving long gray sheets of rain against the reinforced glass of the estate.

Inside, the house remained an impenetrable cocoon of warmth, dark wood, and quiet authority. My bump was full, round, and heavy, a high, proud weight that changed my center of gravity and forced me to slow my pace. I walked slowly down the corridor toward the security hub. Nikolai was two steps behind me, a silent, looming presence.

He hadn't left the property in months. His beard was kept neatly trimmed, his dark hair cut sharp, but his  eyes bore the terrifying, hyper-focused edge on high alert. His left hand rested lightly against the small of my back, his palm radiating an intense, grounding heat through the heavy wool of my dress.
"You should be resting in the room . Alessio can bring the perimeter logs upstairs." he said.

"I’ve been sitting in the room for four hours, husband," I replied smoothly, leaning back slightly against his hand as we walked. "And I prefer to see the live feeds myself. The shipping traffic out of Boston has been rerouted three times this week due to the northern squalls."
"The shipping traffic is Wesley’s problem," Nikolai flatly stated. "Your problem is taking your afternoon iron supplement and staying off your feet."

I turned my head, offering him a faint, teasing smile. "My health is perfect,Nikolai. Evelyn checked my vitals an hour ago."
"Evelyn is too soft on you," he grunted, though his hand shifted slightly, his fingers caressing my hip with fierce, possessive tenderness. We stepped through the heavy steel doors of the security hub.

The room was bathed in the cool blue glow of thirty high-definition monitors displaying every angle of the estate, the rocky shoreline below, the deep pine forest along the eastern perimeter, the long paved driveway, and the  access tunnels. Jules was sitting  at the console alongside two senior intelligence officers. Wesley was near the wall, an encrypted satellite phone pressed to his ear.

As Nikolai and I entered, the atmosphere in the room shifted. The technicians straightened instantly, their eyes flicking respectfully toward my heavy bump before returning to their screens. "Report," Nikolai commanded, stepping up to the main tactical table and placing both hands flat on the polished steel surface. His broad frame effectively shielded me from the bank of cold monitors.

"All perimeter sensors are green, boss," Jules said, tapping a key to bring up the thermal grid. "The Naples detail under Matteo’s boys is covering the lower cliffs. No movement within five nautical miles." Before Nikolai could respond, a sharp, piercing red strobe flashed across the top left monitor. An automated, high-frequency alarm chimed three times, a dry, mechanical sound that cut through the quiet room like a blade.

WARNING: PERIMETER BREACH - SECTOR 4 (EAST CLIFF APPROACH).

Instantly, the air in the room bled out. Nikolai didn't flinch. He didn't shout. His eyes narrowed into two lethal points of absolute dark fury. In less than half a second, his left arm locked around my waist, yanking me completely behind his massive frame, placing his body between me and the doors.
"Jules," Nikolai growled, his voice dropping an octave into a terrifying, flat vibration that made the glass panels vibrate. "Status."

"Sensors registering three high-speed watercraft approaching the eastern inlet," Jules reported rapidly, his fingers flying across the keys as satellite optics zoomed in on the dark ocean waves. "They hit our acoustic tripwires at twenty knots. No AIS transponders. Dark hulls." Victor slammed his satellite phone shut, drawing a concealed weapon from his shoulder holster in one fluid motion. "Tactical teams 1 and 2 are moving to intercept. Alessio is bringing the armored transport to the   bay."

The quiet sanctuary of the estate had vanished in an instant, replaced by the lethal, mechanical precision of an empire under threat. I felt a sudden, sharp spike of adrenaline hit my bloodstream, my heart hammering against my ribs. I reached out, my fingers digging into the heavy dark fabric of Nikolai’s jacket over his broad shoulder. "Nikolai..." I murmured, my voice steady despite the rapid thudding in my chest.

Nikolai turned his head slightly, his face looking like carved granite. The cold, brutal executioner who had conquered empires was fully awakened, but his eyes were fixed on me with a terrifying, consuming protectiveness.
"Get her to the vault," he commanded Wesley, his voice absolute iron. "You, Jules , and six men. You lock that vault door from the inside. If anyone approaches that door who isn't me, you execute them through the port."

"Nikolai, no," I cut in firmly, my hand tightening on his jacket, my dark eyes locking onto his. "You are not going out onto those cliffs alone."
