Chapter 168 Chapter 168
Along the far wall was a custom-built crib, crafted from reclaimed Italian walnut, its smooth posts hand-carved with subtle, elegant motifs of the Valerius crest interlocked with the Ferro iron knot. Beside it sat a high-backed leather glider chair, upholstered in the softest cream calfskin, complete with a matching footrest and a heavy wool throw. Nikolai was by the far window, supervising two senior security technicians who were installing a secondary, zero-latency biometric monitor above the crib.
He held a tablet in one hand, his eyes narrowed into razor-sharp slits as he monitored the installation with the exact same scrutiny he applied to global maritime contracts. "The sensor field needs to cover a three-meter radius around the crib," Nikolai growled low in his chest, his deep voice carrying an unshakeable weight through the airy room. "If the power cuts out, the auxiliary battery backup on the floor needs to engage within zero point three seconds."
The lead technician swallowed hard, making a rapid note on his device. "It’s already hardwired into the estate sanctuary grid, Mr. Ferro. Even if the entire city of Riverside loses power, this nursery stays online for seventy-two hours."
"Make it ninety-six," Nikolai corrected flatly, leaving zero room for debate. "And recalibrate the thermal camera so it doesn't alert every time the ocean breeze shifts the curtain."
"Yes,Mr. Ferro. Right away." I let out a soft, amused breath, resting both hands over the firm curve of my lower stomach. I walked slowly across the room, my slippers making no sound against the thick rug that covered the center of the floor. As I approached him, his hyper-vigilant focus shifted instantly. He dismissed the technicians with a curt wave of his hand and turned his body toward me.
Before I could say a word, his left arm came around my waist, pulling me flush against his side. His right hand slid down instinctively, resting flat over the peak of my six-month bump. "You're standing again," he said, his voice lacked any real bite, replaced entirely by that deep, intoxicating warmth that was reserved strictly for me.
"I'm inspecting the nursery, husband," I whispered back, leaning my shoulder against his chest, looking up into his sharp, striking features. "It looks magnificent."
His dark eyes swept over the room, the hand-carved crib, the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined with classic leather-bound literature, and the reinforced bulletproof glass resting behind the sheer cream curtains. "It's secure," he said flatly, though the subtle tension in his jaw relaxed as he felt a strong, distinct thump against his palm.
Our child shifted inside me a firm, confident kick right into the center of Nikolai’s hand.
Nikolai froze. A rare, breathtaking softness touched the harsh corners of his mouth. He looked down at my bump, his broad thumb stroking slowly over the navy silk, a quiet, profound pride shining in his pitch-black eyes. "They're getting stronger," he murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, velvet rasp.
"They inherit that from their father," I murmured softly, reaching up to frame his jaw with my hand, my thumb tracing the sharp line of his cheekbone. "Pedro told me this morning that you spent three hours yesterday personally inspecting the nursery's air filtration systems."
"My father talks too much," He growled low, though he turned his head slightly to press a firm kiss into the palm of my hand. "The air filters needed a secondary HEPA seal. I wasn't going to let dust from the construction lower the air quality in my child's room."
"You are going to be an extraordinary father, Nikolai," I said, holding his dark gaze with absolute conviction. He stared down at me for a long, quiet beat.
The irrational jealousy that had shadowed his mind during the first month, the dark, primitive fear that our child would steal pieces of my heart away from him was completely gone, replaced by an intense, fiercely possessive devotion. He didn't see our baby as a rival anymore. He saw our child as the ultimate extension of our unified reign, a precious life he would guard with every drop of blood in his body.
"I am only a father because of you, Isla," he said softly, leaning down until his forehead rested heavily against mine. His hands cupped both sides of my waist, holding me firm against his heart. "Before you came into my life, I was just a weapon waiting for a war. You gave me a home. You gave me a future. And now... you're giving me a legacy."
"We built this together," I whispered back, sliding my hands up to clasp around his neck, pulling him down until his lips met mine in a slow, deep, devastatingly sweet kiss. By four o'clock in the afternoon, the nursery was complete, and the family gathered on the third-floor landing to see the final result. Pedro walked in first, holding a small, polished wooden box lined with blue velvet. Behind him came Anabella, carrying a basket of hand-knitted white booties, and Maria, who carried a warm tray of elderflower tea and fresh lemon shortbread.
Alessio and Esme stood by the archway, leaning against the doorframe with warm, fond smiles. "Mother of God," Pedro breathed quietly as he stepped onto the rug, his sharp dark eyes taking in the grand room. He looked at the carved walnut crib, then over at Nikolai standing beside me like an immovable iron sentinel. "It looks like a royal suite in Genoa."
"It's built to last a hundred years," Nikolai said flatly, keeping his arm anchored securely around my waist. Pedro set the small wooden box down on the mahogany changing table and opened the lid. Inside lay a heavy, antique silver baby rattle, its handle carved with the original Ferro family crest from 1890.
"My mother gave this to me when Nikolai's was born," Pedro said softly, his voice rich with deep, reverent history as he looked at me. "It stayed in the family vault in Naples for forty years. I had it brought over on the private transport yesterday. It belongs here now. In the hands of the next Heir."
Nikolai stepped forward, my hand resting over the wooden box, his eyes shining with quiet emotion. "Thank you, Dad. That means more to us than you know."
"It belongs to my grandchild," Pedro said warmly, giving my shoulder a gentle, respectful squeeze. Anabella walked over to the crib, setting the soft hand-knitted booties neatly beside the cashmere blanket. "Maria and I checked the temperature in here three times," she said with a gentle laugh. "It is draft-free and perfectly warm."
"Of course it's draft-free," Alessio chimed in from the doorway with a broad grin. "My Bother personally threatened the contractor with a swim in the harbor if the window seals weren't airtight!" A soft wave of warm laughter echoed off the high timber beams of the room. Nikolai didn't deny it. He simply tightened his arm around my waist, his dark eyes sweeping over the gathered family with a quiet, formidable pride.
