Chapter 71 Chapter 71
Leaning against the closed door, Suki panted for air as if she’d been running for miles. She ran her fingers through her hair as she tried to process the scene she had walked in on.
Reynard and Brendan. Her mates. Kissing.
Willingly kissing.
Two people who only had negative and hateful things to say about one another, who put up with each other for her sake. They shared something so intimate and passionate. Something bonding. Something that, in their community of male and female bonded werewolves, would be severely frowned upon for going against nature.
Barefoot, she trudged through the garden towards the trees, feeling the cooling grass against her warm skin. It grounded her and settled her ever so slightly – it was the only way she could feel connected to nature with the restrictions against her power.
She should have been disappointed. She should have hated what she witnessed – been disgusted even. Her mind should have told her that it was wrong, and she should have told them to stop pursuing this further.
But…
“Ki!”
She turned around and watched Rey rushing towards.
Reynard exhaled, catching his breath quickly. “I know what you saw was a huge shock to you. Believe me, it was a shock to me too – hell – to all of us.”
Suki said nothing and just watched him inquisitively.
“Please, let me explain what happened.”
Brendan rushed over and huffed at him, annoyed. “I told you to give her space.”
“She deserves an explanation for what happened,” he said defensively.
“Oh, and you actually have one?”
Rey snarled at him.
“You don’t have to give me an explanation,” Suki said softly.
Furrowing his brows, Reynard spoke with confusion in his voice, “We don’t?” He looked over to Brendan, who was equally confused.
That’s when they stopped paying attention to their fear of how their mate would see them and noticed the small changes that only their wolf-senses could detect…
The flutter of her heartbeats, the flush of heat in her cheeks that had travelled to the back of her neck, the shallowness of her breathing, and the growing scent of her excitement between her legs.
She wasn’t disgusted or hateful towards them.
Suki’s mates weren’t just attracted to her; they were attracted to each other, and that was the best news she could have discovered.
A soft but arrogant smile grew on Brendan’s face. “If I didn’t know any better, love, I would say you’re aroused from seeing me and Mr Perfect kiss.”
The blush on her cheeks only intensified. “I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
Rey chuckled and grabbed her hands. “You don’t realise how much you scared me when you ran off.”
“I’m sorry.” She squeezed his hands. “I didn’t know how to process everything. Everything we’d been taught growing up was telling me it was wrong, but it felt so right.” Stepping closer to him, she leaned against her chest, wrapping her arms around his neck.
He planted a kiss on her forehead and exhaled a sigh of relief as she relaxed and pressed her face against his chest.
“I’ll never run away from either of you again.”
Brendan appeared behind her and stepped closer, almost sandwiching her between himself and Rey. “Are we going to ignore the fact that she’s turned on from the sight of us making out?”
Rey glared at him.
“What? She is!”
Suki and Reyanard laughed.
“Listen,” Rey spoke softly to Suki, holding her chin. “What happened between Brendan and me… That was the first time. We both were clearly in denial these past few months about being connected through the bond.”
Brendan hummed, “He’s right. We thought we were only connected through you.”
“But whatever spilt out in the house, that was a shock for all of us,” Reynard continued, cupping her face in his hand. “It’s not like a switch has flipped and we’re finally good now. It’s going to take time for us to adjust to this.”
A soft and gentle smile grew on Suki’s face. She placed her hand on top of Rey’s. “I know, and that’s totally okay. We don’t have to hide, not from each other.” She looked at Brendan, who was also smiling. “I still love you both.”
“We love you too,” said Brendan, stepping closer and wrapping his arms around them both. He hummed a groan. “This situation just got a lot messier, did it?”
“I’ll say,” Suki tittered.
The loud buzzing of Reynard’s phone interrupted the moment. They all parted so Rey could grab his phone and answer the call.
“Uncle Cyrus, is everything all–” he paused mid-speech as a steady but speedy flow of concerns and demands from his uncle. “Yes, sir. I’m on my way.” He hung up the phone.
Suki stepped towards him. “What happened?”
He ignored her and looked at Brendan. “Get her in the house.”
Brendan frowned. “What? What’s going on?” He froze as he felt Rey push his concerns through their bond, replaying the conversation in his head again and again. “Shit…”
“Why? What’s happening?” Suki asked, scared.
“Cyrus is sending guards to the house. I’m needed at the border. Make sure she’s safe, then get out of there before–”
“Before they see me and think I’m causing trouble, I know,” Brendan finished and placed a hand on his shoulder.
Reynard’s eyes flickered between Brendan’s. “Brendan–”
“Go,” he interrupted. “I’ve got her.”
He nodded once, then rushed off, pushing himself off the ground and shifting into his wolf mid-air, perfectly landing on all fours and speeding into the distance.
A small essence of his voice down the bond echoed, ‘Be safe.’
Brendan didn’t wait a second longer; he grabbed hold of Suki’s arm and led her back to her home, slamming the door shut and locking it behind him.
“What is going on?” Suki’s voice rose.
But he wasn’t listening; his mind was spiralling out of control. There was only one thing on his mind – make sure she’s safe. He rushed through every room in the house with his wolf-speed, ensuring all windows and doors were shut and locked and making sure no one was already inside.
Small, smoky puffs of his shadow magic trailed off him as he kept examining the entire house.
“Brendan, please!” Suki’s voice trembled.
The crack in her voice made him pause.
“Talk to me.” When his eyes locked with hers, she could finally see the true fear in his eyes. “W-What happened?” she asked once more.
His lip quiverred as he steadied his breath to speak. “The borders have been breached.”
