Chapter 19: The Royal Wedding

Elara's Pov

The castle rang with excitement. Each corridor and courtyard was brimming with activity for the wedding. Florists dashed past holding bouquets of fragrant flowers, their aromas wafting on the breeze. Seamstresses and tailors came and went holding last fittings for dresses and robes, and musicians tuned their lutes in the great hall.

Amidst the rest, I found a space of calm within my room. Standing by the high window, I gazed out over the kingdom. The previously darkened alleys now shone with lanterns and pennants, and the bell of laughter and music rang to the castle. The people rejoiced not merely for my nuptials, but for a new beginning for all.

A gentle rap on the door interrupted my musings.

"Elara?" My best friend and faithful maid, Lila, came in with a tea tray. "I thought perhaps you could use something hot beforehand."

I turned to smile at her. "You always know what I need before me."

She put down the tray and looked at me. "Are you worried?"

I exhale slowly. "Not hesitant to marry Alden—never that. But. all of the rest of it? The responsibility, the expectations? Overwhelming."

Lila took my hands. "You are going to be such a wonderful queen, Elara. You already are. Everyone loves you, and not for the fact that you carry a title, but because of yourself."

Her encouragement bolstered me, but I was not about to speak before Lady Saria entered, glinting in her eyes.

"You must speak to Alden," she smiled. "He's pacing the halls like a caged lion. I swear, if he were not so calm, I'd consider him the nervous sort."

I laughed softly, imagining my brooding, always-composed king with pre-wedding jitters.

Lila smiled. "He's double and triple-checking every last detail, no doubt."

Saria nodded. "Oh, he is. He even had the kitchen recreate the wedding cake because it 'wasn't perfect enough for Elara.'"

My heart melted at the idea. "He actually did that?"

"He did," Saria said, moving in closer. "And when his advisor asked him why he was worrying so much, Alden responded, 'It's not perfection. It's about showing her how much she counts.'"

I swallowed hard. Oh, Alden…

Now the seamstresses returned with my dress, their faces full of pride. As soon as they draped it across my shoulders, I felt a new person. The dress, with its hues of light and harmony, shone as it caught the light. Small crystals covered the bodice, and the flowing, long skirt poured like liquid silver with every step.

Lila's breath caught. "You look like a queen.".

I stood before the mirror, and for the first time ever, I really did see it. I look like Alden's queen.

The chapel was lovely. Light poured through the windows of stained glass, filling the stone walls with gorgeous colours. Nobles and commoners stood together in the pews—something Alden had insisted on.

Sir Rendal stood at the front, supporting my arm as he had offered to, in politeness.

He stroked my hand. "Ready, my lady?"

I took a deep breath and nodded. "More than ever."

The music began, and as the doors opened, the entire room stood up. My eyes located Alden immediately.

He stood at the altar, all in royal regalia. Always handsome, but in that moment, with his silver-crested cloak enveloping his strong body and his piercing blue gaze locked on mine, he was the king.

And then, to my surprise, his serene facade crumbled. His lips opened a fraction, and his eyes shone with unspoken emotion. He blinked rapidly as if trying to find his balance.

I almost stopped walking at the ferocity of his gaze.

The elder's voice was almost inaudible as the ceremony began. My entire universe had narrowed to Alden.

At the time of vows, he grasped my hands, his touch warm and steadying.

"Elara," he began, his voice stern but filled with tears, "you have been my beacon in the blackest of times. You've shown me to be strong when I was weak and given me hope when I'd lost it. Today, I don't merely vow to love you—I vow to stand with you, to honor and respect you, and to create a future with you.". We will repair this kingdom together—not queen and king, but equals, partners, soulmates."

A tear fell from my eye as his words echoed deep within my heart.

I breathed, and I said my vows. "Alden, you have shown me the meaning of love—not in grand gestures, but in each quiet moment, each look, each act of kindness.". You've made me believe in myself when I couldn't seem to do it myself. I promise to stand by your side, to fight with you for our people, to share in both our triumphs and struggles. You are not just my king—you are my home, my strength, my greatest adventure."

The elder's voice rang out. "With these promises, I now pronounce you husband and wife."

The people cheered, but I barely heard them. Alden lifted my veil, his hands shaking a little as they cupped my face. His eyes were so full of love that it nearly left me breathless.

"You are mine now," he whispered, his lips inches from mine.

"And you are mine," I panted, my heart overflowing.

Then he kissed me, making our love official in front of the entire kingdom.

The banquet was wonderful, with laughter, music, and dancing. The castle courtyard was filled to overflowing with villagers celebrating with food and drink, and the joy was infectious.

Alden and I pushed through the crowd, and villagers stopped to impart blessings. An old woman took my hands and smiled.

"Thank you, my queen," she said. "For bringing our king joy."

Alden squeezed his hand around mine as I struggled against tears.

That night, we had a moment of tranquility on the castle balcony. The stars stretched out before us, their glow reflected in Alden's blue eyes.

"Today was perfect," he murmured, wrapping his arms around me.

I leaned into his warmth. "It was. But it's only the beginning, isn't it?"

He nodded. "It is. We have a kingdom to rebuild, a future to build."

I gazed up at him. "No matter what we face, as long as we're together, I know everything will be all right."

He smiled, giving me a gentle kiss on my forehead. "Then let's make this our greatest adventure yet."

With my head resting against his chest, the sound of laughter and music carried in the distance through the night, I knew—with every fiber of my being—that I was where I was meant to be.

With him.

Forever.
