Chapter 18: Shadows of the Past
Elara's Pov
The castle was abuzz with excitement and happiness once the proposal was made by Alden. Our engagement delighted not only us but everyone in the entire kingdom. While I enjoyed our love and people's dreams of our union, however, anxiety loomed over me like a dark cloud.
Quietly, it started. Outside the realm, there were rumors of odd happenings: animals going missing, crops withering overnight, and inhabitants feeling unusually cold in their houses. "Do you have any idea what it could be?" One morning in the council chambers, while we went over the most recent reports, I questioned Alden. The seriousness of the words on paper in front of us was not lessened by the sunlight streaming in through the windows. Alden's face became anxious as his jaw tensed. "I'm not sure. But it's not natural, whatever it is. With a chill down my spine, I nodded.Although the shadow creature was vanquished, its energy had left scars on the land and its inhabitants. And those scars were worsening.
Two days later, Alden and I set off with a small group of knights and counselors to explore the nearest village that had complained of troubles. The trip was routine, but when we got near, there was a strange quiet about the place. The village itself was unnaturally quiet. The doors were shuttered, and the handful of villagers we spoke to ran in terror, their faces pale.
"They've been like that for weeks," one of the knights said quietly. "Something's in the atmosphere here that's not quite right."
I felt it too—a faint pressure across my chest so it was hard to breathe. The badness of the shadow power lingered, like a poison.
As we walked through the center of the village, my hand touched against the scale that I wore as a pendant. It was warm and comforting to me, recalling the strength that we used to overcome the shadows just moments before.
"It's strongest here," I said, stopping in the middle of the square. I could sense it—the evil energy that seemed to seep from the ground. Alden was at my side, his hand resting on his sword. "Be careful, Elara." I smiled at him to calm him, though my heart was racing with terror. "I can handle this."
We broke up into groups to investigate what was making the noise. When I entered one of the empty buildings with Alden and Sir Rendal, the air grew colder and the shadows grew darker.
"It's here," I breathed, feeling the warmth of the scale against my skin. Shadows curled and twisted like living things. A figure appeared—weak and indistinct, but evil. Its presence made me shiver.
"You may have left us to ourselves," it said to me in a sound that was a thousand whispers. "The shadows never really recede."
Alden was in front of me, sword ready. "Stay behind me, Elara," he said to me, his voice stern. "No," I said, stepping forward. The equilibrium in my pendant shone brighter, its light pushing back the shadows.
"This is why I'm here." The man attacked us, and I brought down the scale. Its beam shone like a lamp of light. The shadow howled, changing to smoke. The light grew brighter, engulfing the darkness until it dissipated. After the room had gone quiet, I dropped the scale, shaking in my hands.
"You were wonderful," Alden said, his voice awed and proud. I looked at him, still gasping. "We're not finished. There's more out there."
The days that followed were hard. We went from village to village, wiping out the lingering power of the shadow. Each fight was a test of our strength and will, but with each win, we were more sure of our ability to defeat this ever-present danger.
Throughout it all, Alden was my pillar of strength. He rode along with me, providing his constant assistance and protection. But I could see the concern in his eyes when I placed myself at risk.
"You don't need to do that," he said one evening as we slept on either side of a campfire. The firelight danced over the concern etched on his face.
I must," I replied, looking at him. "This is more than just the kingdom. I have to know that I can be with you—both as your equal, and as your partner.".
He took my hand, his grip firm but gentle. "You've already proven yourself to me, to the kingdom, to everyone. You don't have to keep putting your life in danger to show it."
I smiled softly, tightening my own hold on his. "I'm not doing this to show that I can. I'm doing this because it's what is right. And because I know we can do anything if we do it together."
His face relaxed, and he stepped nearer, softly brushing my forehead with a kiss. "Then I'll be there with you step for step."
Our last battle against the remnants of the shadows was in a dark forest that bordered the kingdom. The darkness inside it was stronger than any we had ever faced, twisting the trees into grotesque shapes and covering the ground in eerie fog.
Standing at the edge of the woods, Alden faced me and asked, in a serious tone, "Ready?" I nodded, holding the scale tightly. "Let's do this."
The fight was tough, the shadows more ruthless and cunning than before. But Alden and I fought together, fighting off the darkness, and our strength combined was more than it could handle.
As the final shiver of shadow vanished, I fell to my knees, exhausted. Alden was there in an instant and holding me close in his arms.
"It's over," he whispered, relief in his voice. "You did it, Elara."
"No," I replied, resting my head against his chest. "We did it.".
That night, sitting around our campfire, looking up at the stars, I finally really felt the fullness of everything we had been through. More than frightening or unsure, I felt most thankful—Alden, for love, and the strength that we could glean from the other.
While we sat by the fire, Alden took my hand, and his fingers gave me the chills. 'I've never been prouder of anyone,' he whispered, looking into my eyes. I leaned forward, my heart racing. 'And I've never loved anyone more than I love you.'
Our lips touched in a kiss that started soft and grew harder as our love for one another grew. At that moment, the world outside just dissolved and left us with only two people and our gigantic connection.
We had been through trials and tribulations together and come out stronger. When we hugged under the stars, I knew that no problem or darkness could ever separate us again.
