Chapter 7: Uneasy Alliance
The door of the safe house flew open with a bang. Valentina jumped to her feet, gun in hand, only to freeze when she saw who stood in the doorway.
Dante Russo. And he wasn't alone.
"Put the gun down," Dante said quietly. "If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't have heard me coming."
Behind him, two of his men pulled in a struggling figure with a bag over his head. Valentina's finger tightened on the trigger.
"What is this?" she asked, her voice steady despite the fear racing through her.
Dante pushed the hooded man forward. "A gift," he said, yanking off the bag to show Marco's bruised and bloody face.
Marco blinked in the sudden light, his eyes widening when he saw Valentina. "This is a mistake," he stammered. "Valentina, don't listen to him!"
"Shut up," Dante growled, pushing Marco into a chair. He turned back to Valentina. "We need to talk."
Alessio emerged from the back room, his face hard as stone. "We have nothing to talk about."
Dante's lips curved into a small smile. "I think we do. Or would you rather I let Marco go through with his plan to sell all your family secrets tonight?"
Valentina looked between the three guys, confusion and suspicion battling within her. "How did you find us?" she asked Dante.
"I followed you from the cafe," he answered simply. "You should be more careful."
Alessio moved closer to his sister, protectively. "Why bring Marco here? Why not just kill him?"
"Because he's more useful alive," Dante said. "For now." He pointed at Marco. "He's been playing us both. Selling your family secrets to me while promising my territory to someone else."
Marco shook his head furiously. "He's lying! Alessio, I've been loyal—"
"Save it," Valentina snapped. "We saw you at the cafe with Luca. We know about the ledgers, about the foundry meeting."
Marco's face drained of color.
Dante circled the room, his gray eyes never leaving Alessio. "Marco's meeting a buyer at midnight. Someone who wants both our territories. Someone willing to eliminate us both to get it."
"Who?" Alessio asked.
"The Vega cartel," Dante said.
The name hung in the air like a storm cloud. The Vega gang was notorious, brutal in ways that made even hardened criminals uncomfortable.
"They've wanted to expand into our city for years," Dante continued. "Marco found a way to give them what they want."
Valentina's mind raced. "The foundry meeting. That's where he's meeting them, not you."
Dante nodded. "Smart girl."
"I don't believe you," Alessio said bitterly. "Why would you warn us?"
A tense silence filled the room. Dante's face changed, became almost vulnerable. "Because I'd rather deal with a devil I know than one I don't." He stepped closer to Alessio. "I'm proposing an alliance. Temporary. We stop Marco and the Vegas tonight, and then we go back to hating each other tomorrow."
Valentina watched the two men carefully. There was something between them, a stress that wasn't just about being enemies. It reminded her of two magnets, simultaneously resisting and attracting.
"Why should we trust you?" she asked Dante.
Dante didn't look away from Alessio. "Because right now, I'm your only option."
Alessio's jaw stiffened. He glanced at Marco, who was sweating nervously in his chair. "If you're lying..."
"I'm not," Dante said. "But if you don't believe me, we can just wait. When the Vegas come for you next, you'll wish you'd listened."
Valentina touched her brother's arm. "Alessio," she said softly. "What if he's telling the truth? We can't face the Vega cartel alone."
Alessio closed his eyes briefly, then nodded. "Fine. A temporary alliance. Until Marco and the Vegas are dealt with."
Dante smiled, a hungry gleam in his eyes. "Good choice."
"What's the plan?" Valentina asked.
Dante turned to her. "We beat Marco at his own game. He's expecting to meet the Vegas at the foundry. Instead, they'll find us waiting."
"An ambush," Alessio said.
"Exactly." Dante spread a map on the table. "The foundry has three entrances. My men will take the south and east. Your people can cover the north."
Alessio studied the map. "And Marco?"
They all looked at the man shaking in the chair.
"He's going to help us," Dante said. "Aren't you, Marco?"
Marco's eyes darted between them. "Yes," he whispered. "Whatever you want."
Valentina didn't trust the fear in his eyes. It seemed too easy, too practiced. She had seen Marco lie his way out of problems before.
"We'll need to move fast," Dante continued. "The meeting's in three hours."
As the men discussed tactics, Valentina slipped outside for air. Her heart was racing. An partnership with Dante Russo? The man who had held her brother captive? Who had hurt him? It felt wrong, dangerous.
She heard the door open behind her and turned to see Dante.
"Your brother is stubborn," he said.
Valentina crossed her arms. "Why are you really doing this?"
Dante studied her for a moment. "You're very protective of him."
"Answer the question."
A ghost of a smile touched Dante's lips. "Let's just say I have my reasons for wanting your brother alive."
"If you hurt him again—"
"I won't," Dante interrupted. "Not unless he gives me reason to."
Valentina frowned. "That's not very reassuring."
"It's the best you'll get." Dante turned to go back inside, then stopped. "Your brother is lucky to have you. Not many people would risk everything for family."
The comment surprised her. "Is that admiration I hear, Dante Russo?"
He shrugged. "Just an observation."
Inside, they found Alessio on the phone, gathering his loyal men. Marco sat quietly, watched by one of Dante's guards.
"We leave in an hour," Alessio said, hanging up.
Valentina moved to his side. "Are you sure about this?" she whispered.
Alessio looked at Dante, then back at her. "No. But we don't have a choice."
The next hour passed in a rush of preparation. Weapons were checked, plans completed. Marco was secured in the back of Dante's car, his fate still uncertain.
As they prepared to leave, Valentina felt a chill run down her spine. Something wasn't right. This was too easy, too handy.
She watched as Dante's men filed out, followed by Alessio. Just as she was about to join them, she noticed Marco's phone on the table where they had emptied his pockets.
On instinct, she picked it up. The screen lit up, showing a text message that had just arrived:
"All set for Plan B. Foundry is surrounded. They won't know what hit them."
Valentina's blood turned to ice. She rushed outside, but it was too late. The cars were already pulling away, taking her brother and Dante straight into a trap.
And Marco, sitting in the back of Dante's car, was smiling.
