Chapter 6: The Betrayal Revealed
The glass shattered against the wall as Marco slammed his hand on the table. "I said bring me the books! All of them!" he shouted at the frightened accountant.
"Yes, sir," the man mumbled, scurrying out of Alessio's old office.
Marco smiled, leaning back in the big leather chair that until recently had belonged to Alessio Moretti. It had been three days since he'd turned Alessio over to Dante, and everything was going according to plan. The Moretti family was now his.
Across town, Valentina crouched behind a dumpster, watching as Marco's men loaded boxes into trucks outside the Moretti warehouse. Her heart pounded in her chest, but her hands were steady. She'd managed to get Alessio out of Dante's mansion, but their problems were far from over.
"That's the third shipment today," whispered Rico, a young man who had stayed loyal to Alessio. "They're emptying everything."
Valentina's eyes narrowed. "Where are they taking it all?"
"Don't know. But word on the street is that Marco has told everyone Alessio is dead."
The words hit Valentina like a punch to the gut. "Dead?" she whispered.
Rico nodded grimly. "He held a meeting yesterday. Said Dante killed Alessio and that he's taking over to keep the family strong."
Anger flared in Valentina's chest, hot and fierce. "That lying snake," she hissed. "Alessio is alive. And Marco is the one who handed him over to Dante in the first place!"
She thought of her brother, hidden away in a safe house, still healing from his injuries. After their escape from Dante's house, she'd taken him to an old friend who wouldn't ask questions. But Alessio was restless, eager to recover what was his.
"We need proof," Valentina said. "Something to show the others that Marco betrayed Alessio."
Rico hesitated. "There might be something. Marco's been meeting with someone from Dante's crew. I've seen them twice now, at that old cafe near the river."
Valentina's eyes lit up. "When's the next meeting?"
"Tonight. Nine o'clock."
A plan began to form in Valentina's mind. "Get me a camera," she said, her voice strong. "Tonight, we catch Marco in the act."
Meanwhile, Alessio paced the small room of the safe house, frustration growing with each step. His body still ached from Dante's "hospitality," but his mind was sharp, focused on payback.
He stopped when he heard voices outside the door. Moving quietly, he pressed his ear against the wood.
"He wants to meet again," a man's voice said. It was Luca, Dante's right-hand man. "Tonight. Same place."
"Why?" Dante's voice was clear, sending a chill down Alessio's spine.
"Marco says he has the ledgers. All the Moretti accounts, properties, everything."
Alessio's blood ran cold. The family ledgers were holy, passed down through generations. They held everything—every secret, every asset, every weakness.
"And he's just giving them to us?" Dante sounded suspicious.
Luca laughed. "Not giving. Selling. For protection. He thinks some of Alessio's people might be planning something."
"Smart man." Dante stopped. "Though not smart enough to realize he's being played."
"What do you mean?"
"Marco thinks he can control both families by playing us against each other. But once I have those ledgers, what use is he to me?"
Alessio stepped back from the door, his mind running. Marco's deception went deeper than he'd thought. The snake wasn't just after power—he was selling out the entire Moretti family to their biggest enemy.
And Dante... Alessio's thoughts about Dante were complicated. The man had kept him prisoner, but he'd also shown times of unexpected vulnerability. And now, it seemed Dante was playing his own game.
Alessio moved to the window, looking out at the city lights. He needed to warn Valentina. But first, he needed to know exactly what was in Marco's twisted head.
Night fell as Valentina positioned herself on the rooftop across from the cafe. The camera Rico had brought was old but working. Through the lens, she watched as Marco entered, looking nervous and constantly checking over his shoulder.
Ten minutes later, Luca walked in.
"That's him," Rico whispered. "Dante's man."
Valentina's finger pressed the shutter button, capturing image after picture as Marco and Luca talked. Then Marco pulled out a leather-bound book—one of the family ledgers.
"That traitor," Valentina hissed, her heart racing with anger. "He's selling us out."
She continued taking photos as Marco and Luca talked, their conversation getting more heated. Then Marco pulled out a second book, this one smaller, with a red cover. Valentina gasped.
"What is it?" Rico asked.
"That's my father's personal ledger," Valentina whispered. "It contains everything—all the family secrets, the locations of hidden assets. Things not even Alessio knows about."
Rico's eyes widened. "If Dante gets that..."
"The Moretti family is finished," Valentina finished for him. She watched as Marco gave over both books, taking an envelope from Luca in return.
"We have to stop them," Rico said, moving to stand.
Valentina grabbed his arm. "Wait. We need to know where Marco's keeping the rest of the ledgers."
They watched as the meeting ended. Marco and Luca walked out together, still talking. Valentina and Rico followed quietly, staying in the shadows.
The two men stopped near a parked car. Valentina strained to hear their talk.
"The rest are at the old foundry," Marco was saying. "No one goes there anymore. It's the perfect hiding spot."
Luca nodded. "Tonight. Midnight. Bring everything, and Dante will make sure you're well protected."
Marco smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I'm counting on it."
As the guys parted ways, Valentina turned to Rico. "We need to get to that foundry before midnight."
Rico looked unsure. "Just the two of us? Against Marco and Dante's men?"
Valentina's green eyes flashed with purpose. "We'll call for backup. There are still people loyal to Alessio."
"And what about Alessio? Shouldn't we tell him?"
Valentina paused. Her brother was still healing, still vulnerable. But this was his fight too.
"We'll tell him," she decided. "But I won't let him risk his life again. This is my fight now too."
As they hurried back toward the safe house, Valentina's mind raced with options. The workshop. Midnight. It was their chance to catch Marco with all the proof, to expose his betrayal to everyone.
What she didn't notice was the shadow following them, moving quietly through the darkness, watching her every move with cold, calculating eyes.
The trap was set. But who was the hunter, and who was the prey?
