CHAPTER EIGHTY-FIVE
LUCIAN'S P.O.V
"Okay, we've arrived."
"Thank goodness. My butt is so stiff.", Aurora stretched as we got down.
It was a long drive but we finally got to the pack within a day and now it was nighttime. We were outside the pack's boundary, we couldn't go into his pack unless he gives us permission. If I was still an alpha, I would have gone in easily, but since I've been branded a rogue, I can't just waltz in there or I risk having a whole hoard of men after me.
"So...", she started as we stood staring ahead of us.
We were mostly surrounded by trees and dense bushes. From afar, I could see various houses of all sizes.
"...how do we call him?"
"Why are you looking at me?"
"You are an alpha, you have to know how to do these things."
I shook my head, burying my hands in my pockets.
"Correction, I was an alpha, now I'm just a rogue."
She rolled her eyes.
"To me, you're still an alpha and will continue to be after we get rid of Desmond."
I pressed my lips together, my heart suddenly felt warm. I felt I was close to saying "I love you" so I just coughed and shrugged.
"Whatever. Anyway, the only way to call another alpha out is by howling."
She frowned, her eyebrows joining at the middle.
"Howling?"
I nodded.
"Yep, you howl, he comes out, its a call to him."
"Okay."
She raised her head and shifted her head to her wolf form, my eyes flew wide in shock, I hurriedly moved to stop her.
"What do you think you're doing?"
She shifted her head back to her human form.
"What is it? You said we needed to howl to call him out."
"Yes, I did say that but why are you trying to howl?"
She looked at me like I had grown two heads.
"Because I want to call him."
I shook my head fiercely, a growl on my lips.
"Hell no, you aren't calling him."
"Why?"
"Because if you do, he might mistake your call as a mate call and come rushing here with lust."
It was true, though it wasn't done on a usual basis, but if an alpha hasn't gotten a mate, other unmated females can try their luck howling for him. If he likes your howl, he'll come to you. Now, I'm sure Kieran will most definitely like her howling, so there is no way I'm letting her howl.
She burst into laughter, holding her stomach.
"Lucian, that is so ridiculous. There is no way he will think such a thing."
I sighed.
"Trust me, Aurora, he will. But I have no time to explain that. All you need to know is that you can't howl for him."
"Fine." She threw her hands up. "Then you do it."
I hesitated, she frowned.
"What is it?"
"I can't do it."
"Come on. Why?" She groaned, stomping her feet.
"Because...if I howl, he will only take it as a challenge and might come out with his men to attack us." My voice came out subdued.
"Why would he think that?"
"I'm a male and an alpha wolf even if I'm no longer an alpha. My howl will only translate to me challenging him and if he rushes here with his men, they won't even stop to consider that I am not here for a fight." Not that he won't want to let me live anyway. I'm sure the guy will be so ecstatic to see me die by his hands.
"Stop growing!" She suddenly snapped, I jumped a little.
"Huh?" I hadn't even realized I had been growling. I guess that's how much I hate this. "Sorry."
She took a deep breath, running her hands through her hair with her eyes closed.
"Okay, here's what we'll do. You let me hold..."
"Not a chance."
"Lucian!"
"Sorry, go on."
"As I was saying, you let me howl, then when he comes with that mate ideology, you can stop him. Then we can talk to him. Agreed?"
I immediately shook my head.
"No, I don't agree."
She growled and glared at me, her teeth flashing.
"Then what do you want us to di? Do you want to sleep outside? In the car when we can just call him, and stay in a comfortable room?".
"I know you think I'm being impossible..."
"Well good you know."
"Sorry about that. I have an idea and I think it might work."
She folded her hands across her chest, her eyes narrowed.
"What is it? Tell me."
"How about we howl together at the same time. That way, you and I can create a harmless harmony and he won't come here raging with lust or come storming with men ready to kill me. How does it sound to you."
She thought it over for a few seconds then shrugged with a smile.
"Whatever works for you, let's do it."
I smiled at her.
"Alright, let's do it at the same time."
She nodded, we both raised our heads and shifted them into our wolf forms. We made eye contacts at the same time then opened our mouths and howled into the night air. Our howls together created a symphony of harmonious sound that felt so intimate, so sacred. Almost like something that should be done between mates as a love language or as something special to them. I don't know about her, but as I stared at her, I could only feel an overwhelming rush of affection for her. Her white fur shone under tge moonlight and golden eyes stared back at me with a serene expression as if they were waiting for me to do something. The air around us shifted and I felt myself moving closer to her. We shifted back to our human forms without even noticing. I felt her breath on my cheeks as I neared, she was panting softly, as if in expectation of what I could give her.
"Aurora." I whispered softly, my lips now on her jaw.
"Lucian." She called me back in that sultry, soft voice of hers, sounding needy.
I raised my lips to settle on hers, approaching cautiously until we suddenly heard the sound of footsteps. She gasped and jumped away from me just as we heard her name being called.
"Aurora?"
