Chapter 14: April

“Fuck!” I screamed out while I was in the bathroom trying to put my clothes on.

“No, shit!”

Fuck didn’t happen, but the shit sure as hell hit the fan. I’d never cursed so much in my life, I didn’t know what I was thinking, my plan seemed to be a good one at the time and why the hell was there so many of them here this morning. It was as if the humiliation got worse with an audience.

I paced up and down in his bathroom and I didn’t know what to do with myself. My priorities were all wrong.

Get the job.

Show him your presentation.

Get promoted.

This was the aim of getting the job in the first place, but somehow, I managed to fuck him on Monday, blow him on Friday and make a fool of myself the following Monday. All in one week, what else could possibly go wrong?

“Are you going to spend all morning in there or are you going to come out?” Luke banged on the door.

I took a deep breath before opening it.

“Sorry, it’s just you when gave me the apartment, then you said we should be a fake couple and then I didn’t hear from you all weekend so I didn’t know what was going on and…”

I was rambling, avoiding his stare, and hoping he would comfort me. That he would tell me it wasn’t all in my mind and I wasn’t going crazy? There was chemistry between us, he couldn’t deny it. Even if he wanted to and Elisa hinted at it, in some crazy way, by saying he never hired someone like me. But he did, and the first day he had me on top of his desk.

What had changed?

“We need you in the conference room. We have urgent business and you can’t hide in here all day.”

Tears fell down my face, I’d gone from being a sexy vixen to a woman so embarrassed the idea of facing anyone felt like too much.

“Stop. We have work to do and I can’t deal with this today.”

I nodded, holding back any more tears, “Okay.”

“Good.”

I headed back to the sink to get some paper towels to clean my face and get my confidence back.

“And one more thing.”

I faced him, worried he was going to say I was fired.

“You need to put your dress on right. It’s inside out.”

At his words, the tears were falling a few seconds ago returned. Why was I like a pathetic teenager around him? I hated myself for it and hated him for not telling me if I’d got the signals all mixed up.

Was a job really worth all this hassle?

Being someone’s fake girlfriend, whatever that meant and working as a PA, I had to have some pride. And I wanted to do the right thing, but all of that jumped out of the window as soon as he saw me sprawled on his desk. It failed miserably when I noticed not only did he see me, but Jeff did too.
