Chapter 20: The Sunflower Misunderstanding

Just as Emily was busy organizing the meds, lining up each bottle and box just the way she liked, Joseph popped up at the door of the school infirmary, holding a bunch of bright sunflowers.

"Hey, Emily, these are for you," Joseph said, breaking the silence. He walked over with a grin, the flowers giving off a light, sweet smell.

Emily was caught off guard by Joseph's sudden appearance and the flowers. She paused her work and looked at him, a bit puzzled. Why was Joseph giving her flowers out of nowhere?

Seeing her hesitation, Joseph quickly explained, "These are a get-well gift. I should've visited you in the hospital, but I was away for training. I heard you were back today, so I got these sunflowers for you."

He scratched his head awkwardly. "I know people usually bring fruit or something, but since you're already out, I thought flowers might cheer you up. So, yeah, I got you these."

For some reason, Emily saw a new side of Joseph in that moment—sincere and thoughtful.

She took the sunflowers and smiled. "Thanks, Joseph. I really like them."

Joseph's smile widened. "No problem, Emily. We're all glad to have you back. I heard you got hurt. How are you feeling now?"

Emily touched her head, a bit embarrassed. "I'm much better, thanks to the school's care and everyone's support."

Joseph stood there, the sunlight making him look even more radiant as he gazed at Emily with warmth and concern in his eyes.

"Emily, take care of yourself and don't get hurt again," he said softly, his voice full of genuine concern.

A warm feeling spread through Emily. Joseph's concern felt real, making her feel both comforted and reassured.

She nodded and smiled. "Thanks, Joseph. I'll be careful."

Joseph glanced at his watch, a hint of shyness in his eyes. "Alright, I have a class soon, so I need to get ready. Make sure to rest and not overdo it."

Emily nodded. "Okay, thanks for checking in. See you after class."

After Joseph left, Emily went back to her desk and placed the bouquet in a prominent spot. She took a deep breath of the floral scent, feeling her mood lift.

The golden sunflowers popped against the white walls, bringing a bit of life and warmth to the infirmary.

That afternoon, Emily took care of a bandage change and helped a kid who sprained their ankle during gym class. As the day wrapped up, she packed her things and grabbed the bouquet of sunflowers. Just as she reached the door, she bumped into Sophia and John coming in from outside.

Seeing John made Emily feel a twinge of guilt for some reason. She glanced around, feeling a bit anxious, worried they might get the wrong idea.

"Ms. Brown, hey," Emily greeted with a smile, even though she felt a bit uneasy inside.

"Emily, you're back! How are you feeling after being discharged? Is everything okay?" Sophia asked warmly.

Emily, not quite used to Sophia's enthusiasm, smiled and replied, "I'm fine. Today wasn't too tiring. I feel okay, thanks for asking."

"That's good. If you need any help, just let me know."

"Thank you, I will."

Sophia's eyes then landed on the bouquet in Emily's hands, curiosity flashing in her eyes. "Emily, those flowers are beautiful. Did your boyfriend give them to you?"

John noticed the sunflowers too but just glanced at them and then at Emily before looking away, like he didn't care much.

Emily smiled awkwardly and explained, "No, these are a get-well gift from Joseph. He heard I was back at work today and got them for me."

Sophia nodded, a hint of admiration in her voice. "I see. Mr. Miller is very thoughtful. Sunflowers symbolize sunshine and hope, which is perfect since you just recovered."

Emily didn't want to dwell on the flowers and smoothly changed the topic. "Why did you come in from outside? Did you just get back from somewhere?"

Sophia explained, "John just accompanied me to a district-organized psychology training. We came back to grab some things."

"I see."

Sophia checked the time and said, "Alright, we won't keep you. You must be tired. Go home and rest early."

Emily nodded and said goodbye, "Okay, see you tomorrow."

After clocking out, Emily walked out of the school infirmary.

Just then, her phone buzzed, and she saw a message from John: [Tonight, 12:00]

Emily couldn't help but feel a bit helpless. She'd have to sneak out again tonight. If James found out, he'd definitely be upset.
