Chapter 19: Back to the School Infirmary
As the taxi rolled up to the school gate, Emily handed the fare to the driver and swung the door open.
A burst of fresh air hit her as she stepped out, soaking in the warm sunlight.
Emily tilted her head back, letting the gentle rays wash over her face. She took a deep breath, like she was drawing in some much-needed strength. As she exhaled, it felt like she was letting go of all the gloom in her heart.
The campus was quiet, with students still in class. Only the occasional bird song and a distant whistle from the sports field broke the silence.
Emily straightened up, her steps steady and sure, as she made her way to the school infirmary.
She walked down the tree-lined path, sunlight filtering through the leaves and casting dappled shadows. The peaceful campus vibe calm her mood.
Not far ahead, the familiar small building came into view, looking especially serene in the morning sun. Emily instinctively picked up her pace.
"Dr. Johnson, you're finally back!" A young nurse at the door spotted her and broke into a big smile, greeting her excitedly.
Emily smiled back, "Yep, I'm back."
The young nurse quickly linked arms with Emily. "We missed you so much while you were in the hospital. The students kept asking when you'd return."
Emily gently patted the nurse's hand, a touch of emotion in her eyes. "Thanks for caring. I missed you all too."
They chatted as they walked into the infirmary. Everything inside was neat and orderly, clearly thanks to the young nurse's hard work during Emily's absence.
Emily looked around, feeling a warm glow in her heart. Every corner was filled with memories, and the nurse's attentiveness made her feel right at home.
Every table, every chair, every medical supply was exactly where it should be, just the way Emily liked it. She gently touched the tabletop, feeling the warmth of being cared for.
"Thank you, you've done an amazing job," Emily said to the nurse, her voice full of gratitude. "It looks just like before, maybe even better."
The nurse beamed with pride. "I just tried to keep everything normal until you came back."
Emily smiled and nodded. She knew that every bit of order here represented the nurse's hard work and her longing for her return.
"Alright, I won't keep you. I need to get back to the front desk before the boss catches me slacking off," the nurse said playfully.
"Okay, go ahead. I'll treat you to a meal on your day off."
"Thanks, Dr. Johnson."
With that, the nurse left the infirmary.
Emily took a deep breath, the familiar scent of disinfectant filling the air. This was her space, her familiar work environment.
She walked to the window and pulled back the curtains, letting more sunlight flood the room. The sunlight on her face brought a long-lost sense of peace and satisfaction.
This was her haven, a place where she could offer help and care.
As the school bell rang, students poured out of their classrooms. Those who heard Emily was back eagerly rushed into the infirmary, surrounding her and expressing their excitement.
"Dr. Johnson, you're finally back!" a student exclaimed.
"We were so worried about you," another said with concern.
"We missed you a lot," a little girl added softly.
Emily smiled, patiently listening to each voice, her eyes full of warmth and understanding. She knew that to these students, she was more than just a doctor; she was a friend, a listener.
"Thank you all for your concern. I missed you too," Emily replied gently, her voice like a soothing breeze.
The students eagerly shared their recent adventures with her, filling the infirmary with laughter and joy. Emily's presence made the small space feel warmer and more vibrant.
She wasn't just coming back to a job; she was returning to a place where she was needed and appreciated.
But break time was short. As soon as the bell rang, the students reluctantly said their goodbyes and hurried back to class.
Emily stood at the clinic door, watching them leave, a warm feeling swelling in her heart. The students' energy and cheerfulness made her forget all about the morning's gloom.
After the students left, the infirmary fell silent again. Emily turned back inside and started organizing the files and medicines on the desk, ready for whoever might come in next.
