Chapter 194: The Breaking Point

Kaelen's POV

The word "kill" hung in the air like poison.

My knees hit the ground hard. Wet earth. Cold stone. I didn't feel it. Couldn't feel anything except the way my chest was caving in. Ribs cracking under pressure I couldn't name.

Kill Roland.

Seraphine's terror slammed into the air. Raw. Absolute. The kind of fear that strips away everything else.

He wants me to execute the man who tried to save her.

My hands pressed into the mud. Fingers digging deep. Claws threatening to break through. The wolf inside me was howling. Not from rage. From something worse.

Helplessness.

"From Roland," Damien said again. Almost cheerful. "Prove your sincerity."

The knife against Seraphine's throat pressed harder. Another drop of blood sliding down the blade. I watched it fall. Watched her face go whiter.

She's already so pale. How much more can she bleed?

My vision swam. Gold and red fighting for dominance. The dual colors of my eyes reflecting the war inside my skull.

If I refuse, she dies. If I agree, I become the monster who kills her pack warriors.

Through the weak bond, I felt her trying to reach me. Desperate. Broken. Don't do it. Please. Let me die instead.

But she didn't understand. Couldn't understand.

I can't watch you die. I physically cannot make that choice.

The mate bond wasn't just connection. It was compulsion. Written into my DNA. Every instinct screaming to protect her. Even if it meant destroying everything else.

Lucian's hand tightened on my shoulder. "Kaelen. Don't."

His voice was steady. Anchoring. But it couldn't reach me through the chaos.

Jason moved closer. Derek positioned himself on my other side. Four men trying to hold back one Alpha on the verge of breaking.

They think I'm about to lose control. Transform. Attack.

But they were wrong.

I wasn't going to attack. I was going to surrender.

The courtyard had gone silent. Only the crackle of dying fires. Only Seraphine's ragged breathing.

Roland stood tall despite his injuries. Blood streaking his armor. Face set in lines of absolute defiance.

"Don't you dare," he said to me. Voice low. Meant only for my ears. "Don't you fucking dare give him what he wants."

But I could feel it. The decision forming. The choice being made in some part of me I couldn't control.

To save her, I'll become the executioner.

The Silverwood warriors shifted. Hands on weapons. Ready to fight. Ready to die rather than submit.

They'd rather die than watch me kill Roland.

Through the bond, Seraphine was screaming. Silent but deafening. NO. Stop. Please stop.

But what else could I do?

What fucking choice do I have?

Damien watched me with satisfaction. Studying my face like reading a book. Every flicker of emotion feeding his sadistic pleasure.

"Tick tock," he murmured. "Seraphine's neck is delicate. My hand might slip."

The knife pressed harder. Drew a thin red line.

Seraphine gasped. Pain and terror mixing through the bond until I couldn't tell which emotion was hers and which was mine.

My body shook. Hands pressed so hard into the ground my knuckles went white. The wolf inside me was tearing at my control. Not to fight. To break.

I can't do this. Can't become this.

But the alternative...

I forced myself to look at her. Really look. At the silver collar burning her throat. At the blood on her lips. At eyes that had lost their fire.

She's dying anyway. Slowly. In pieces.

And if I refused? If I let Damien kill her now?

I die too. The bond makes sure of that.

So what was the point? What was the fucking point of any of this?

"Last chance," Damien said. Almost bored. "Roland first. Then the rest. Or I end her now."

The courtyard held its breath.

Roland's eyes met mine. And I saw something there I didn't expect.

Understanding.

Not forgiveness. Not permission. But understanding of impossible choices.

He took a long breath. Deep. Deliberate. Then turned slowly toward me.

"If you can save the princess," his voice carried across the silent courtyard, steady despite the exhaustion, "we're willing to die."

The words landed like a hammer blow.

No. Don't say that. Don't give me that burden.

But Roland wasn't finished. He kept speaking, his gaze shifting from me to his warriors. To the men who'd followed him through hell.

"Tell her," he said, voice cracking slightly. "Tell her Silverwood's honor... lives forever in her blood..."

Through the bond, Seraphine's emotions exploded. Terror. Denial. Horror beyond words.

She's screaming at them to stop. Begging them.

Roland turned fully toward his warriors now. Facing the battered, bloodied survivors who'd fought so hard to reach her.

His hand moved to the short sword at his hip.

No. Please no.

The blade scraped free of its sheath. Moonlight caught the steel. Made it gleam silver in the firelight.

"Brothers," Roland said. Voice stronger now. Resolute. "For the princess."

The other warriors understood immediately. Hands moved to their own weapons. Not to fight. To follow.

They're going to kill themselves. All of them. Right here.

The realization hit like ice water. Through the bond, I felt Seraphine's mind fracturing. Felt her trying desperately to scream, to stop them, but the collar strangled every sound.

Roland raised the sword. Point toward his own chest. The blade steady in his scarred hands.

Around him, other warriors mirrored the movement. A dozen men. Maybe more. All prepared to die together rather than be executed by my hand.

This is their choice. Their honor. Their way out.

"NO!" Lucian broke from beside me.

He lunged forward, hand outstretched toward Roland. Trying to reach him. Trying to stop this.

"Don't!" Lucian's voice cracked with desperation.

But Roland's grip didn't waver. The sword pressed against his chest. Right where his heart beat beneath scarred armor.

"You dare?!" Damien's roar shattered the moment.

His eyes blazed with fury as he glared at Lucian. The knife at Seraphine's throat pressed harder, drawing more blood.

"Think about Seraphine!" Damien snarled. "You stop them, and I slit her throat right now! Then your Alpha dies too. Is that what you want?!"

Lucian froze mid-step. Hand still reaching toward Roland but body locked in place.

He can't move forward. Can't pull back. Trapped.

The courtyard crystallized into nightmare. Roland's sword at his chest. Lucian suspended between them. Other warriors poised to follow their leader into death. Damien's knife drawing blood from Seraphine's throat.

Everyone frozen in this moment of impossible choices.

How did we get here? How did everything go so fucking wrong?

My hands were still pressed into the mud. Still shaking. But I couldn't move. Couldn't think. Couldn't do anything except feel the weight of all these lives pressing down on me.

If they die, it's my fault. If Seraphine dies, it's my fault. Every choice I make destroys someone.

The silence stretched. Seconds feeling like hours.

Roland's eyes found mine one last time over Lucian's frozen form. His lips moved, forming words meant only for me.

"Save her."

The sword pressed harder against his chest. Breaking skin. Drawing blood that darkened his already stained armor.

He's really going to—

Through the bond, I felt Seraphine gathering something. Some last reserve of strength I didn't know she had left.

What is she—

"NO—!!"

The scream tore through everything.

Not Roland. Not me. Not Lucian frozen between us.

Seraphine.
