Chapter 193: The Executioner's Choice
Seraphine's POV
"It's manipulation!" Cordelia screamed. "It's a fucking curse!"
But Damien ignored her. Started pacing again. Building to his finale.
"Imagine your future," his voice took on that hypnotic quality. Soft. Seductive. "You wake up every morning. Vespera beside you. Your old friend. Your best lover."
No. Stop.
But the image formed anyway. Kaelen opening his eyes. First thing he sees is her face. Her smile.
That should be me. Should be MY face he sees.
The jealousy was physically painful now. Like claws ripping through my chest.
"Eight years of companionship," Damien continued. "Eight years of understanding. You had that once. You can have it again."
Through the bond, I felt Kaelen's emotions. Memory. Recognition. Something complicated I couldn't decipher.
He's remembering. Their eight years together. And I'm...
Rage and jealousy merged into something toxic. Consuming. I hate her. I hate him for remembering her like that. I hate this fucking bond for making me feel it all.
"Meanwhile, Seraphine lives like a princess in Ravencrest," Damien spread his hands. Magnanimous. "Protected. Honored."
Protected? By you?
I remembered his knife. His smile. The way he'd ordered my torture. This is protection?
"You'll feel each other through the bond," Damien's voice dropped intimate. Knowing. "She'll sense you with Vespera. You'll sense her with me."
The full horror of it hit me then.
I'll feel every moment. When he touches her. When they're together. And he'll feel...
My stomach heaved. He'll feel Damien touching me. Using me.
This wasn't connection. This was mutual torture. Designed specifically to destroy us both.
"This isn't torture," Damien said, like reading my mind. "It's the sacrifice peace requires."
Through the bond, I tried screaming at Kaelen. Don't agree. Please. Let us die together. Don't let him win.
But I felt his emotions shift. Felt him considering. Weighing options.
He's actually thinking about it. About accepting.
The realization broke something in me. Some last piece of hope shattered.
Kaelen dropped to his knees. A low growl building in his throat. His whole body shaking with the effort of maintaining control.
"This is insane," Lucian hissed in his ear. "We can stall. Buy time. Don't make any decisions now."
Cordelia was crying. "There has to be another way. Please, there has to be..."
But I could feel it through the bond. Feel Kaelen's resolve crumbling. Feel him breaking under the weight of impossible choices.
"Princess isn't a bargaining chip!" Roland's voice rang out. Strong. Defiant. "Silverwood never surrenders!"
The warriors behind him roared agreement. Weapons raised. Ready to fight to the death.
Damien sighed. Disappointed. "Roland. You're a smart man."
He looked around at the Ravencrest forces. At the exhausted Silverwood survivors. At me bleeding on the ground.
"Do you really think refusing my terms gets anyone out alive?"
He's right. We're surrounded. Exhausted. We can't win.
Through the bond, I felt Kaelen reaching the same conclusion. Felt his desperation mounting.
"There has to be another way," Cordelia repeated. But her voice had lost conviction.
Jason and Derek moved closer to Kaelen. Lucian's grip tightened on his shoulder. Four men barely restraining one Alpha on the edge of breaking.
He's going to agree. I can feel it. He's going to save my life by destroying everything.
The jealousy, the fear, the despair all swirled together. I was drowning in it. Losing myself in the emotional storm.
He'll marry her. Wake up next to her. And I'll feel it all. While Damien...
I couldn't finish. Couldn't think it through. The horror was too complete.
Kaelen's voice came out broken. Defeated. "I can't... I can't just let her die."
His eyes found mine across the courtyard. Blood-red and filled with anguish.
I'm sorry. I don't have a choice. You understand that, right?
Damien's right. This is the only way. I can't lose you.
Something inside me shattered completely. He's choosing to save me. Even though it means marrying her. Even though it means...
The possessiveness screamed in protest. He's MINE. How can he agree to marry someone else?
But deeper, underneath the rage, guilt bloomed. This is my fault. If I wasn't his mate, he wouldn't be trapped. My existence is his curse.
I tried pushing back through the bond. Then let us die together. Don't give him what he wants. Don't let him win.
But I knew he couldn't hear me. Wouldn't listen even if he could.
Because he loves me. Because this fucking bond won't let him choose death.
Damien watched the whole exchange with satisfaction. Like watching his puppets dance exactly as planned. His smile widened, eyes glittering with triumph as he observed Kaelen's internal collapse. Every flicker of emotion crossing that anguished face fed his sadistic pleasure. He was a conductor orchestrating our destruction, and the symphony was reaching its crescendo.
"I understand you need time to consider," he said with false sympathy. "But we're all busy people."
He clapped his hands. Sharp. Final. "Enough delays. Here are my terms. War reparations. Execute Silverwood survivors. Marry Vespera."
The knife returned to my throat. Pressed in just enough to draw blood. One drop sliding down the blade, warm against my cold skin.
Kaelen's terror spiked. His control shatterred like glass under pressure.
He's so afraid I'll die. That fear will make him agree to anything.
"The money can be paid over time," Damien continued conversationally. "I'm reasonable. I don't expect fifty million immediately."
His eyes gleamed with cruelty hidden behind that gentle smile. "But to demonstrate your sincerity. To prove you accept this peace treaty..."
No. Please no.
My heart stopped. I knew what was coming before he said it. The dread built in my chest, suffocating, crushing the air from my lungs.
"We'll start with the second condition."
He pointed at Roland. At the proud, defiant man who'd fought so hard to save me. Who'd led the rescue mission. Who'd never once doubted my worth. Whose loyalty had never wavered even when mine had been questioned.
"Kill them. Right in front of her." His voice dropped lower, more intimate, as if sharing a secret. "Let her see what your choice costs. Let her watch you become the executioner. Show her what kind of Alpha you really are when forced to choose between love and honor."
