Chapter 13: Rekindled Frames

Chapter Thirteen: Rekindled Flames

Morning sun spilled through the curtains, casting soft golden light on the walls of the bedroom. I sat by the window, a steaming cup of coffee in my hands, but the warmth did little to soothe the storm inside me. My thoughts were consumed by Ryan, the deep timbre of his voice, the presence of him, and words exchanged between us over that conversation at the bar.

It was a whirlwind in my mind, a mixture of nostalgia and emotions I hadn't felt in years. Memories of our past floated to the surface, unbidden but welcome, filling the quiet house with echoes of a time when my heart had been alive with love and hope.

\---

He'd always been different, had this way of making the ordinary feel extraordinary, like the universe conspired to align in the moments we shared. I smiled, the edges of my lips curling into an involuntary smile, a rare warmth bleeding through my chest.

I remembered the way he looked at me, as if I were the only one in the world. The depth of emotion in his gaze made me feel cherished and seen in a way that was my sanctuary, my safe harbor, from the stormy weather called life.

But life had happened, and we'd grown apart; choices, misunderstandings, and time had built the wall between us that I never thought would be breached. Yet here we were, years down the line, and one call had managed to shake those walls right down to their very foundation.

\---

I ran my fingers over the rim of the coffee mug, my heart aching with the weight of possibility. Can I really fall in love all over again? Open up to the vulnerability, to the joy and to the pain that goes with all of it?

Ryan's words from the night before played back: "I've never stopped thinking about you, Emma."

Those words had lit a fire inside me, a fire I thought had long since died.

\---

The day stretched on, but I was lost in my thoughts, moving through the motions of daily life like a ghost. Memories of Ryan and me played like a movie reel, each scene vivid and full of life.

I remembered the time he had surprised me with a picnic in the park. We had sat under a sprawling oak tree, sharing laughter and secrets as the sun set around us. I could still taste the sweetness of the wine he'd brought, the way it had mingled with the taste of his kiss.

And then there was that night we danced in the rain, clothes soaked, clinging to our bodies, but we didn't care. He'd twirled me around, his laughter infectious, until we both collapsed onto the wet grass, breathless and happy.

\---

The memories were so potent they almost felt real, as if I could reach out and touch them. My heart swelled with the realization that those feelings had never truly left me. They'd been buried, waiting for the right moment to resurface.

By the time the afternoon sun began its descent, I knew the truth I'd been avoiding all day. I was falling in love with Ryan again.

\---

It terrified me-this rekindling of something I thought was lost. Still, it exhilarated me, filing me with a sense of hope I hadn't felt in years. This wasn't about Ryan; this was about me, remembering what it felt like to be truly alive.

Yet, the reality of my marriage loomed over me like a shadow. Peter's coldness, his silence, his refusal to communicate-they were wounds I carried, but they didn't erase the vows we'd made. I was still his wife, and that complicated everything.

\---

The inner war continued to rage on as evening drew near. I stood in the kitchen, staring out the window as the first stars appeared in the night sky. Could I really let myself love Ryan again? Could I risk the pain and uncertainty for the chance at something real?

I didn't have all the answers, but one thing was clear: my heart wasn't ready to let go of him. Not yet.

\---

As I lay in bed that night, the only sound in the house was the soft hum of the heater. Peter hadn't come back, and for once, it didn't choke me. My mind was elsewhere, lost in the possibility of a new beginning.

Ryan's face filled my mind as I succumbed to sleep, his voice echoing in my dreams.

"I want you back, Emma."

And for the firs

t time in a long time, I allowed myself to want him too.
