Chapter 12: Fractured Silence

Chapter Twelve: Fractured Silence

The house was eerily quiet when I got home, my head still tangled in the events of the evening. The conversation with Ryan replayed in my head, his words hauntingly sweet. For a brief moment, I had dreamed of another life, but reality quickly reminded me of its tight grasp.

Peter's car was still in the driveway, one of those jarring reminders of a life shared-a life increasingly devoid of meaning. I stepped inside, swung the door shut behind me, and the familiar scent of his cologne wafted through the air.

I found him in the kitchen, leaning against the counter with his phone in hand. His shoulders were tense, and his expression unreadable from whatever held his attention.

"You're home," I said, my voice careful but steady.

He didn't look up. "Obviously."

The chill in his tone was a bit like a slap in the face, yet I refused to back down. I dropped my bag onto the counter and crossed my arms, watching him.

"Peter, we need to talk."

Finally, he looked at me, his eyes distant. "What about?"

Don't play dumb," I snapped, my patience fraying. "You've been distant for months, barely speaking to me, and when you do, it's like I don't even exist. What's going on?"

He sighed, setting his phone down with exaggerated care. "I'm tired, Emma. I've had a long day."

"Then make it short," I countered, my voice rising. "What is going on between you and Veronica?"

His jaw clenched, and for a second, I thought he really would answer. But then he shook his head and pushed past me, reaching for his coat hanging from the hook beside the door.

"Not this again," he muttered, an edge of irritability in his voice.

"Yes, this again!" I said, following him as he moved toward the door. "I am your wife, Peter. I have a right to know the truth. Are you having an affair?"

He came to a dead halt, his back to me. My heart thundered against my rib cage as I waited for his response-but he didn't say another word. Instead, he yanked the door open, stepped out into the storm, and let the door slam behind him.

I stood stunned, shaking. He hadn't even denied it.

The house felt colder without him in it, the silence deafening. I sank onto the couch, my mind racing. Was this his way of confessing? His silence spoke volumes, but it also left so much unsaid.

I thought back to the man I'd married, the man who had promised to love and cherish me. How had we come to this? When had he stopped caring enough to fight for us?

My phone buzzed on the coffee table, snatching me out of my reverie. A part of me was hoping it would be Peter, that somehow he would show up at my doorstep, explaining all that had happened. However, as I picked it up, Ryan's name came up on the screen.

I hesitated, my finger hovering over the answer button. Talking to Ryan felt like an escape, a lifeline amidst the storm. But was I really to allow that?

The call dropped before I could make up my mind, and I was left staring in silence at the screen.

Time dragged along, the weight of Peter's absence weighing upon me. I replayed our interaction over and over in my mind, searching for answers in his silence.

As I finally lay in bed, the emptiness beside me seemed more pronounced than ever. Tears slipped down my cheeks as I stared at the ceiling, my thoughts jumbled in a mess of anger, hurt, and confusion.

Peter might have left my house, but he hadn't left my heart-not yet.

But with every question he dodged, each cold shoulder, and the minutes of silence between us, he was slowly, yet effectively, pushing me away. And I really did not kn

ow how long it would take before I stopped clinging.
